Celebrity or Hal to Alaska?

My husband and I who are 39 and 45 are going on our first crusie next summer. I picked the Infinity to go on but I keep seeing negitive reviews on the web and I am rethinking. Is it just that someone always has to complain? We are looking for good food, lots of pampering. Any suggestions.

Howdy gernleaf!

Welcome to Cruise Critic and the Need Help Using The Boards? Ask Here! Forum! 04.gif

Thank you for your inquiry. However, you have posted on the forum where members find the "How to ..." type of information for using Cruise Critic's software such as avatars, signatures, countdown clocks or tickers, attaching pictures, etc. It is not the place for your type of post and the information you seek is off topic here. 05.gif

Per the Community Guidelines and to help you out, I am moving your thread to the First Time Cruisers Forum where it will be on topic. The new location for your thread is a better location for more of your fellow Cruise Critic members to see it and to be able to help you with the information you seek.

I hope you don't mind a friendly 05.gif suggestion, but you might want to read the Community Guidelines and FAQ. Especially the "Getting Started" section in FAQ. You will see how a new topic should be consistent with the specific forum you choose. It also gives a brief summary of the topics covered in some of the forum sections. We sailed on Infinity to Alaska a couple of years ago and had a wonderful time.

I'd base my decision on ports of call, embarkation port and the ship. Read through reviews with the thought that this is from one person only. Sometimes you will start seeing a pattern of people who are disgruntled for some reason. They will go to every cruise board out there and trash the particular ship/line they were unhappy with, sometimes under different names.

Go to the Alaska Ports of Call board here on CC (plan to stay a few hours :) ) and you will find a treasure trove of Alaska cruisers who have been there, done that and are more than happy to help you make your choices.

My own personal opinion of the two lines you have chosen is...you probably wouldn't go wrong with either one.

Have fun planning!

I've only been on Celebrity, and I'm going again with them to Alaska on Mercury. You and your DH are a only a couple years younger than me & my DH. We love Celebrity, and good food and pampering are just part of the reason! I've heard wonderful things about HAL as well, but the average age is much older usually. I've heard that the Alaskan trips usually have a younger average because many multi-generation families will cruise with them for those trips.

Mainly, the only concern I would have with Celebrity would be the ships with the pods, because over the past, they have had some issues and can cause the trip to miss a port or two. I don't know if Infinity has pods or not.

I sailed the inside passage on Infinity a couple of years ago...I can't imagine being spoiled like that ever again! What a ship! I'd do it again in a heartbeat if I had the $$$$$. Book the Taku Glacier flight with the salmon bake (out of Juneau)...to die for, although extremely expensive...just checked out the price on Celebrity's website yesterday.

That was a very nice excursion. Very relaxing. :)

We are booking with HAL for Alaska. We boke it down to ports of call and we really wanted to see Glacier Bay followed by Tracy Arm and Sawyer Glacier. At the moment only HAL do this so it was an easy decision for us in the end. We are in our late 30s and although I have been lead to believe there may be an older crowd on our ship it doesn't bother us as it is more the place we want to see.

I'd say research the ports of call that you really want to see and then work out which cruise ships do them and then look at the line.
