I have 24 hours to decide - need help!

Recommended Posts

I posted the other day saying I had a D1 room on the Thanksgiving sailing of Liberty but I was on a wait list for a JS. (Never sailed in a JS.) It will be me, my dd (9) and a friend of mine who has NEVER been on a cruise before. Since there will be 3 of us sailing I thought the extra room would be nice. Well, a JS just opened up (and no, RCI did NOT call me, I found it online) - room 1602. Here are my questions/concerns....

1. the JS is 1160 more than the D1. I won't ask my friend to pay more money - so I would be taking the extra hit. It's a lot of money but not enough to put me in the poor house. Although, that would REALLY cut into my casino money!

2. We would be right below the pool or the h2o zone, or something - they don't have the deck plans up for deck 11 yet. I would hate to wake up to deck chairs moving above my head every morning. Although I guess I never sleep in past 8am anyways.

3. I suffer from a massive fear of commitment - I have an on again/off again thing going with my friend - at this point I think we may be on again - but not sure - in addition to my fear of commitment I also have a fear of communication. (We did make these reservations when we were "off" but still friends.) If I were to book the JS and he decides to cancel can I switch back to the D1? Would I get my 1160. back?

So I put room 1602 on a 24 hour hold - any comments/suggestions?

Thanks -

Kathy

Just noticed at the end you called this person a "friend" but hes a man...so is it a friend or a friend with benefits....I personally wouldnt take on the extra cost if he wasnt going to pay part of it. Especially with it being on again off again...that is bound to be brought up at some point if things turn sour. And i dont think you can hold two rooms at once...

Sorry I am no prude, but a male friend with a a daughter who is 9...and the only question you have about it is spending the extra on a JS for more room? I say let him get an inside on his own and you and dd stay in the original room. This way if he is off again when time of cruising he can lose his money. No way would I put up the extra at all...i think you are putting in too much (in more ways than money) to this.

I went on a cruise with a "friend" one year and we were not

"friends" when we got back. You and dd go and stay in your nice balcony and enjoy! If he is paying for 1/2 the upgrade - go for it! I love deck 10. The further in the front I think the better. Love the breeze and only one flight to the gym and pool:cool:

is a he and he is a friend with benefits - but think it could be more (but since I have the nasty fear of communication and commitment - it could be tricky!) I have already paid the deposit on the D1. The JS is only a 24 hour hold. I wouldn't want to ask him to pay more - this is his first vacation in years and I don't want kill him with sticker shock.

we will have the twin beds! My dd has known him since she was still in diapers and thinks of him as a family member. I would NEVER let my dd see me share a bed with anyone.

My thoughts on your situation.

With three people in a cabin, I would go for the JS (if you think you can afford it) That way you can have the twin beds and the sofa bed open and still have a bit of room to get around. I know you can have the same thing in the D1, but it WILL be a tight squeeze. Also, the balcony is MUCH bigger on the JS. The D1 balcony has 2 chairs and a small table. The JS balcony has 3 chairs (1 a recliner type) and a table.

If you really like this man and think that it could be more then friends with benefits then let your fear of communication and commitment go and have a great vacation. You never know it could be the start of a new chapter for all three of you.

There is nothing wrong with the woman paying extra, as long as you are sure he is not trying to take advantage of you. (It sounds like this is not the case).

I have moved up from a D1 to a JS for my last two cruises and my next two that are booked. You will love the space, the walk in closet, the larger balcony and your vacation.

ENJOY!

my favorite parts of the room. I love having coffee there in the morning and a night cap there before bed. Once my dd goes to bed I like to sit out there and read or stare off into space - so it would nice to have the bigger balcony since there will be an extra person.

I guess I will do my taxes tonight so I can get my refund to pay the difference.

And you are right, he is not trying to take advantage. He is paying his way for the D1 - he has never even heard of a JS - and he would be happy in the D1. Plus I will get the extra cruise credit!

Thanks -

I would pick the cabin I wanted. Since he isn't paying anything more, how much do you want a JS? IF that's really what you want, go for it. If he and you aren't friends (?) when you cruise, you and your DD could enjoy the larger room.

If it were me, having to spend the extra to "impress him" would tick me off. If you do the JS, I'd be sure to tell him that YOU paid extra for it so that in the event you decided to go again with him, he'd know that's not what he paid for. I wouldn't do it until after the cruise though because making him feel guilty ON the cruise isn't the way to go.

No matter what your choice, enjoy your cruise.

Also..if you do have to go back to the D1....you can get the money back.

I say get the JS..you will love the extra room with 3 people. We had a D1 on Freedom...and went in our neighbors JS....and loved it ! We are doing a JS on Liberty now :)

One of the other posters is correct...you will LOVE the extra room for your daughter.

Have a great time !

bigger room and balcony. But since it's just my dd and I - and I have to pay the adult fare for her I can't justify it. But since he is paying the adult share of a D1 and I am paying and adult and child share of a D1 I think (i have to run the numbers) if I pay the extra for a JS it will come out to about what i normally pay for 2 adult fares in a D1.

Kathy: thanks for the info. I think do what makes you feel comfortable. You can still enjoy the balcony on the D cabin. If the extra is going to cost you enough to put a damper on spending while you are cruising go for the D cabin. He never knew the difference anyways so why start out bigger and then next time have to downsize....it ultimately comes down to what you wish to do with your vacation dollars. Have fun. I will be boarding when you get off. My cruise is eastern on the 24th.

Hubby and I won't sail in anything less than a JS--it's perfect for 2! We tried a Superior OV one time--NEVER AGAIN!!!! Waaay too cramped!

Whenever you do something for someone else, always consider it a "gift". Sometimes, you will get something out of it--sometimes you will be repaid, but to avoid bad feelings make sure you are OK with giving it away--be it money, material goods, etc....

If YOU want to sail in a JS, do it! DON'T do it just for this "on again, off again" man!

When I first started cruising, I would book a room with a window. I "knew" I didn't need a balcony. I was never in the room other then to sleep and change my clothes. Why would I pay for a balcony. Well RCCL gave me a free upgrade on my forth cruise to a balcony room. I have never booked a room without a balcony after that. I MUST have the balcony.

Well, For my 10th cruise, the cruise that would make me a Diamond member I thought it would be a treat to have a JS for this one cruise. I LOVE the JS. The extra room is great, I actually keep the room much neater with the extra space, the walk in closet is really nice. I love the full tub and shower over the "tube" shower.

Cruise 11 was on the Freedom and of course it was a JS, I have booked cruise 12 and 13 on the Serenade and Liberty and of course they are JSs.

It is just impossible to go back. I save extra to make my vacation everything that I want it to be and I want it to be and now I want it to have a balcony and a JS.

Moral of the story, you don't miss what you never had.

if it was me, i'd stay in a D1.. people always talk about JS cabins, but they're not that bigger than a D1, plus, how much time do you spend in a cabin anyway?

We always stay in balcony cabins, but I'd have to be crazy to upgrade to a JS - It's a LOT more money, usually a 1/3rd more. this money's better spent on drinks, good times and excursions.

That is a big fear!! I know I won't want to - but not sure if i could afford a JS every cruise. They look so pretty on the website.

DH and I splurged on our first JS on Jewel a few mos. ago. While I personally could never do an inside or an oceanview (the balcony just "makes" the cruise experience for us), I wouldn't have any problem going back to a standard balcony cabin in the future if a JS wasn't in the budget. :)

while you are unilaterally upgrading his holiday accommodations why not also go shopping and upgrade his cruise wear? maybe also send out a few resumes on his behalf so on return he can have better job and afford JSs? stick to the agreed plan. or discuss the possible change.

I am going to Florida the first week of april and atlantis mid june - when I get back from those trips if I have an extra 1160 and there is another JS available I will get the room. I am going to let this one go :( . I would love it - but I don't want to commit myself to paying the extra money just yet. (see, told ya I have a fear of commitment - ANY type of commitment!!)

Thanks for the advice!

Kathy
