C 2 C Posted April 12, 2007 Author #51 Share Posted April 12, 2007 I discovered that there is a train ferry from Harwich that goes into various Dutch cities. Prices are good. www.dutchflyer.com.uk My computer can't find that website, Since I prefer to fly into Amsterdam that information would be greatly appreciated. alfiemom Posted April 12, 2007 #52 Share Posted April 12, 2007 We just booked the Connie Eastbound. It was a tossup between this and the Century trip as we wanted to do Amsterdam and Beligum. I discovered that there is a train ferry from Harwich that goes into various Dutch cities. Prices are good. http://www.dutchflyer.com.uk We will be celebrating our Anniversary on the 18th. Marytutor: Are you on the 4/11/08 sailing? If so, we'll be sailing together once again. Bobbie
Marytutor Posted April 12, 2007 #53 Share Posted April 12, 2007 Bobbie, Yes, that is the one. We plan to stay in England for a while and then take the train ferry to Holland. In a way that gives us both cruises. I love Holland and Zeebrugge. Amsterdam is an easier airport than Heathrow. In taking the ferry, we do not have to worry about the restricted weight issues on the discount inter-Europe airlines. Mary
alfiemom Posted April 13, 2007 #54 Share Posted April 13, 2007 Marytutor: Sounds great! If we didn't have to fly out of Heathrow, that would be a grand thing to do. My DH has always wanted to go to Amsterdam. Well, looks like we may have to do this type of thing again. Sucks! Bobbie
Marytutor Posted April 13, 2007 #55 Share Posted April 13, 2007 Bobbie, The way around that is to go to Amsterdam right when you get to Harwick and then take the train back again. Definitely stretches what you can accomplish in one trip. Hotels should probably still be cheaper. Mary
alfiemom Posted April 13, 2007 #56 Share Posted April 13, 2007 Interesting thought. Have to see what work constraints might be. Since we can't book air yet (UA hasn't gotten past March 2008), it may be something to consider. I'll check it out. Thanks. Bobbie

alfiemom Posted April 13, 2007 #58 Share Posted April 13, 2007 Marytutor: So, once off Connie, you board the train/ferry in Harwich for Holland. How long is the crossing? I can't seem to find that on the site. Bobbie
Marytutor Posted April 13, 2007 #59 Share Posted April 13, 2007 Bobbie, It is 6 hours. We will most likely spend a few days in the Cotswalds and then go over. There is a day one and a night one with sleeping rooms. 2007 Timetable London - Amsterdam Mon - Thurs Friday Saturday Sunday Notes (see below) 1 1 1 1 London Liverpool St dep 06.25m 20.38 06.25m 20.38 06.18 20.38 No service 20.00 Colchester dep 07.22m 21.38 07.22m 21.38 07.18 21.38 No service 20.56 Harwich International arr 07.51 22.02 07.51 22.02 07.44 22.02 No service 21.20 SAILING Harwich International dep 09.00 23.30 09.00 23.30 09.00 23.30 09.00 23.30 Hook of Holland arr 16.15 07.30 16.15 07.30 16.15 07.30 16.15 07.30 Hook of Holland dep 17.07 08.22 17.07 08.37 17.07 08.37 17.07 08.22 Schiedam Centrum dep 17.46 08.54 17.46 09.16 17.46 09.16 17.46 08.54 Rotterdam Centraal arr 17.38 08.53 17.38 09.08 17.38 09.08 17.38 08.53 Amsterdam Central arr 18.52s 10.19s 18.52s 10.22s 18.52s 10.22s 18.52s 10.19s Amsterdam - London Mon - Thurs Friday Saturday Sunday Notes (see below) Amsterdam dep 12.10s 19.40s 12.10s 19.40s 12.10s 19.40s 12.10s 19.40s Rotterdam dep 13.13 20.43 13.13 20.43 13.13 20.42 13.13 20.43 Schiedam Centrum dep 13.17 20.47 13.17 20.47 13.17 20.47 13.17 20.47 Hook of Holland arr 13.42 21.12 13.42 21.12 13.42 21.12 13.42 21.12 SAILING Hook of Holland dep 14.45 22.00 14.45 22.00 14.45 22.00 14.45 22.00 Harwich International arr 20.15 06.30 20.15 06.30 20.15 06.30 20.15 06.30 Harwich International dep 21.06 07.10 21.06 07.15 21.06 07.25 20.58 07.10 Colchester arr 21.32 07.37 21.32 07.38 21.32 07.48 21.29m 07.37 London Liverpool St arr 22.36 08.48 22.36 08.39 22.34 08.57 22.42m 08.48 Notes 1. Nonna and Papa Posted April 13, 2007 #60 Share Posted April 13, 2007 We traveled from London via the "boat train" to Harwich, where we boarded a Stena Line ferry for the trip to Holland. The ferry is large and very comfortable. At the time, we were spending 2 months traveling through Europe, so we had a Eurail pass, enabling us to travel first class on the trains. Also included were various other modes of transportation, including the ferry. We paid an additional fee per person ( I think it was $5.00) for use of a first class lounge at the aft of the ferry. A keypad secured entry and each person had their own leather lounge chair, a reading lamp and table, and access to a private restroom. There was a large TV and I believe we had our own set of headphones. It was a very comfortable trip of about 3 1/2 - 4 hours. Food was available on the ferry to purchase and there was a movie theater onboard and a game room. They even had a playroom with a clown for the children. We disembarked at the Hook of Holland and then took the train (right there at the ferry terminal) to Amsterdam. Try these websites: www.stenaline.com www.youra.com/ferry/intlferries.html Hope this helps. Mary
Marytutor Posted April 14, 2007 #61 Share Posted April 14, 2007 Another great thing to see in Holland is Madurodam, the miniature village. http://www.madurodam.nl/default.php?language=1&sqlmode=1&fid=479. Another favorite is Delft, a charming canal town. This is the great time to see these things and the flower garden. Mary
