5 days in Denmark with a family

Recommended Posts

Hi! I've been reading a lot here, and thought I would put out our plans here for commentary from the experts.

We're a family of five, arriving on a Sunday morning in July from the US at 7:30. We depart on a cruise to Norway the following Friday -- around noon. The kids are 14, 12 and 8 and pretty good travellers.

Our plans are to rent a van and tour around until Wednesday, when we'll return to Copenhagen. The older two are boys, and very into things medieval, as well as their Viking heritage (only 25% Norwegian -- but they claim it.) The 8 year old is a girl, and pretty much rolls with the punches (mostly figuratively.)

So I've been reading about the Trelleborg Viking site, and think we'll head there on Sunday morning. I believe there is a Viking market going on there the week we'll be there. Then we're on to Odense. That's where we'll spend our first night. I know we'll all be really tired, so I don't know if we'll try to do much there the first evening. I've read that the cathedral, with it's 1000 year old relics could be interesting to the kids, as well as the Hans C.A. stuff.

The next day (Monday) we plan to visit the Egeskov castle. There seems to be a lot to do there, maybe occupy a good part of the day. Our destination that evening is Billund. The kids so far know nothing of the existence of Legoland.

Tuesday all day will be Legoland. We're staying that night as well in the same hotel so that we can take an afternoon break if we wish. There's a pool at the hotel. (It worked great for us at Disney.)

Wednesday I would like to head up to Arhus and visit the open air museum there, then take the ferry back across to Odden in the afternoon to go back to Copenhagen. I'm thinking of skipping Roskilde, since we plan to visit the Viking ship museum in Oslo.

Wednesday evening we'll be joined by my mom and sister, we're all staying at the Square. They will just be arriving, so won't be up to much.

Thursday I'd like to do a canal tour, see the round tower, don't know about the castles -- we'll have to see what the kids are up to. The evening will be at Tivoli.

We're trying to balance being relaxed (it is vacation after all!), not getting bored, and seeing some interesting things.

How does it sound so far? Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Wow, sounds like you have great plans, and lucky you that you'll have so much time in Denmark. If you're interested in Vikings, I am surprised you're passing up Roskilde. It's not that far from Copenhagen by Train, or expecially car. In addition to the viking ship museum, they have other stuff going on to view Viking life where people are making things, including a viking ship. Also, if you're timing is right, you can take a quick trip on a viking ship and help row. I think the kids might enjoy that. Also in Roskilde there is a big church where all the Danish Kings and Queens are burried.

If you make it to Helsingor to visit Kronborg castle, be sure to tour the dungeon area as well. Also, there's a maritime museum as well in the castle that I always enjoyed. And, in Helsingor there's a great ice cream shop in an alley next to the train station which is always a must when in Helsingor.

In Klampenborg, just north of Copenhagen, is Deer Park and Bakken, an amusement park. Definally worth doing if you can fit it in your schedule.

Oh, also in Copenhagen at 9 pm there's a night watchmans tour which I've not taken, but always thought would be interesting. I am sure the kids would enjoy it.

Have fun.

Steve

I will also go to Roskilde if i was you.

But if you are coming in the start of july be aware that the Roskilde Rock festival is going on from july 5th to july 8th and warm up from the 1th.

There will be over 100.000 people in Roskilde that week attending the festival and there is only living 55.000 in the city so there will be crowded.
