Smoking

My husband and I are very sensitive to cigarette smoke-(I have asthma). Are people considerate? Are the non-smoking areas really free of smoke. I would love to river cruise, but fear being miserable the whole time.

My wife and I are signed up for a Vantage river cruise next August 1st on the River Odyssey. That boat is smoke free starting in 2005. Holland to Hungary. Willard

txch- you don't say where you are cruising. Europeans allowing smoking many more places than they do in the US. In China smoking was not permitted in the dining room on the ship nor on the bus...but almost everywhere else...

Did the Viking Rhine last year. Only smoking was outside the entrance door.

Viking limits smoking to the outdoors on its cruises for the English-language cruises that it markets in the U.S. and Canada. Smoking apparently is allowed on its cruises for the European market, however. Last fall, I was on the VIKING BURGUNDY when it was tied up next to a sister ship that was filled with Europeans (mostly Germans). Our dining room was smoke-free, but we could see the Germans puffing away in their dining room a few yards away.

Let you know soon. Sailing Viking from Kiev. Thought they said no smoking in the DR. Could have asked my TA who called today. Got me a bargain 2/1 even though it had expired. Great TA. :)

Just returned from a 21 day cruise tour on River Melody. A small room in BACK of the bar with it's own exhaust system was the only place you could smoke inside the boat. You could smoke outside on top of course but we only had 4 people out of 140 that even smoked and they always stayed clear of the rest of us out of consideration. I wouldn't be concerned about smoking on any of the boats marketed to Americans. Marketed to Europeans could be another matter.......
