how is the spirit?

Recommended Posts

The Norwegian Spirit is my favorite ship in NCL's fleet. Her Asian decor is beautiful. Her public spaces aft allows many wonderul views of her wake which on other newer NCL ships are now limited to aft suite passengers.

In my mind her only negative limitation is not having the small refrigerators in her non suite cabins. However, her crew does a wonderful job of filling the ice buckets twice a day.

She is well kept, being Star Cruises/NCL's first new build in late 1998. Yes, she has aged some, but I could not see much wear and tear. I would not hestitate to sail on her again.

My family and I (10 of us) had the BEST time on the Spirit--just returned yesterday from the Bermuda/Tortola/St. Thomas trip out of NY ... I can't wait to write a review and it will ALL be positive with the exception of one small complaint about not being able to get a reservation at Tepanyaki the entire time despite arriving early in the "reservation" line (and I DO mean EARLY!!) .. no biggie, though.. I even had a good time in the reservation line! Read the reviews to get tips and then just look forward to a wonderful cruise!!

We LOVED our cruise. DH and I went ALONE for our 10 year anniversary. It was a wonderful trip in every way.

Kittykath: Did you hear any rumblings about what happened the last night? We weren't night owls on this trip (too busy baking in the sun all day!) but we heard some rumor when disembarking yesterday morning.

I wonder if our paths crossed?

Bananaerz: Don't worry about not enjoying the Spirit. We loved our cruise! I have cruised RCL and Celebrity before. DH was on his first cruise. Freestyle is wonderful and now I am SO GLAD I booked this cruise rather than one with the traditional dining options. I never had a problem in the past but I think DH would have HATED having a set time in a set place for dinner, etc.

ENJOY!

I'm going on the spirit april 19-27 next year. Generally, how is the spirit? :)

I will be on your sailing next April. That week the kids are off from school on Long Island. I enjoyed the Spirit. I am sailing this August again and then next April. My only complaint is that there are no quad balconies. My family either has to take an inside, outside or 2 cabins ( to get a balcony). I enjoy my balcony and it becomes a more expensive vacation when I have to take 2 cabins.

Chichileo - wasn't it a wonderful cruise? I didn't get any pool/hot tub time on this cruise since it was a family trip for my mom's 80th b'day so it was allll about her! Trivia, casino, shopping (onboard and off).. all fun! I didn't hear about the last night but must say I heard a bit more noise than usual in the wee hours---seemed like something was up but I was too relaxed (or tired from packing!!!) to investigate!! My ONLY complaint about the cruise was that I would have liked to get a res. for the 10 of us in Tepanyaki and could not the entire week---I went down to the res. desk 4 times, earlier each day, to no avail.. but I didn't really care - I was able to get us La Trat. 2 nights (and that was free!!) ... I can't wait to cruise again!

Happy to hear all these positive comments about the ship I'll be spending 15 days on.

:D :D :D

Just one question to all of you..as for dining reservations, can you call from your room, or do you have to go to the restaurant to make the reservation?

Reservations are made either at the reservation desk or by calling one of several reservation hotlines. Both open at 7am. I ended up getting off the reservation line one morning at around 7:10 because the line wasn't moving. I went around the corner to the house phone. The call was answered on the first ring and I was able to get a reservation for the following evening!!!!

The cruise WAS great. We never got to eat at Tepanyaki either but we really didn't try that hard. I'm sure it wouldn't have been that hard being only a party of two though.

Now that you mention it... We had a balcony cabin on the 11th floor, forward. Late at night when we were reading in bed we hear a few BIG, LOUD BOOMS above. We hadn't heard that noise before the entire cruise. From what we were told, there was a fight between two young (drunk) men and one was hurt badly. I DID overhear a NYPD guy telling an NCL worker that "someone is going to be spending the night in jail tonight." Weird; right?

I was on the 6/23 sailing as well. I wonder what time and where it happened. We went to bed around 1:30am from the casino. The ship was great, the crew and staff were great, the shows and food were okay. Like all things it has pros and cons... I will be writing a review soon.

Did you here the woman screaming at a receptionist because "her cellphone wasn't in her room and she wasn't getting off until someone did something about it" ? She was totally out of control. The receptionist said she would get the hotel manager to help her and the irate passenger said "I don't need someone to tell me its not there". I was swiping my card to disembark when this happened so I wonder what the outcome was.

I have never seen a more obnoxious group of passengers on any cruise I have been on. I hope this was limited to this particular sailing. And it wasn't everyone ofcourse. As someone in the cruise staff said "you have good passengers and bad...with nothing inbetween."

Tepanyaki was very good. We ate there once. Cagneys was also very good. If you go early you may be able to just walk in without a reservation (that happened to us at Cagneys around 5 45pm).

I'm sorry, i should have told you where i saw them. Try going to ncl.com then fill out the information under find a cruise. It will bring you to all the cruises in april, and click on our april cruise (19-27). Look for pricing and avalibility, click next to it where it says itinerary details If you move the mouse over St. Thomas, Semana, or Tortola and scroll down on the page you should be able to look at all the shore excurshions. I from wantagh in long island. :)

I don't know where it happened but I know that there were two drunk men involved, one was hurt badly (someone said a bottle over the head?) and the police were there to deal with it when we arrived in NYC.

We never saw any real action because we went to bed so early! LOL

During the day it always seemed calm around the pool. My husband noticed a few youngish guys/gals that he said were obnoxious and we wondered if it were those people involved in the fight.???

We kept to ourselves for the most part but those people we chatted with were very nice. We also enjoyed Randy the guitar player in Henry's Pub very much. We are 40ish and the Pub was more our scene than the nightclub type places (we never even went in one! LOL)

Chichileo - I never made it to Henry's Pub except for 2 afternoons w/my group for the fish and chips... wish I had, though, because 2 of my new Cruise Critic buds were, from what I hear, terrific at karaoke!! I spent time in the Galaxy and Maharini's w/my "kids" (30-somethings!!!) but my husband DID get to hear some good music in Henry's. Thanks for the info about the last night.. my h. reminded me that some of the noise we heard in the hall on deck 8 was from teens claiming they were "making a movie"... hmmm---I'm hopeful their "movie" didn't include a bar fight (they seemed too young for that scene, though)... I guess whenever you get this many people together there IS the opportunity for some dissension (sp?) but isn't it too bad? Thank goodness 99% of the fellow passengers we met were fun and easy-going! K.
