cthyssen Posted October 27, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 27, 2007 My husband & I are experienced hikers and plan to do the lava hike. Does anyone know how often there is actually lava flowing to see and how often it just isn't safe to get close enough?
kapoho2 Posted October 27, 2007 #2 Share Posted October 27, 2007 Right now there is no flowing lava that you can hike to. There is also no lava flowing into the ocean....so no steam plumes. The lava that is flowing is in a very remote area of VNP and it is totally off limits. The lava stopped flowing into the sea in June after a series of hundreds of earthquakes in one day. The lava flow that began in the remote area broke out on July 21. But, there are plenty of very interesting hikes that you can do in VNP. You can hike into old craters, hike to see the devastation that a lava flow can do to a forest, or just hike for miles across old lava fields that resemble the surface of the moon. Check this site daily for the latest updates Current update of the eruption of Kilauea Volcano, Hawai`i Of course, any of this could change at any time. Have fun! cthyssen Posted October 27, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted October 27, 2007 Thanks for the info! We have a few months yet before our trip so hopefully the lava will start flowing again. Otherwise us flatlanders here in Minnesota have seen nothing like lava fields so it will be great regardless.
