Question about the Cliff Walk in Newport.

In 1990, my husband and I walked the whole cliff walk. It seemed to be about 2-3 miles at most. It is quite beautiful...the ocean on one side and the beautiful mansions on the other side. As long as you are used to walking and have good shoes, it is not difficult at all. The day we went, the weather was also very good.

You will see the ocean from the mansions, but you are much further from the beach. As I recall, on the mansion tours, we walked briefly on the outside of some of the homes. Most of the tours were inside. The interiors are awesome.

Will we be seeing any of the views that are seen directly on the Cliff Walk

On any of the mansions that face the ocean, if you go out on the back lawn and walk towards the ocean, you will eventually come to a fence that separates that property from Cliff Walk, and from that fence you will be able to see the views. I was not with a tour group when I did this; so once the mansion tour was over, I was able to tour the grounds. With a tour group on a set schedule, this may be a problem.

Has anyone walked the whole Cliff Walk? If so how long did it take and how rough did it get?

Yes, twice.

2-3 hours

Very rough!!! From http://www.cliffwalk.com/mapsouth.htm (referring to the southern end of the walk) This section of the walk is also the most difficult. This part of the walk is not paved or leveled; you follow a path when there is one and make your own when there is none; you climb, you jump from boulder to boulder. I was going to describe it more, but look at the pictures here (they do it better than I ever could):

SBtS,

Thank you for the info. It is nice knowing ahead of time what we can expect. We will definitely try 6, 7, and 8 but if it get too rought we are not embarassed to turn around. It just looks like such a neat walk and 2 to 3 hours is not bad.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've lived here all my life and have never walked the entire Cliff Walk... It is a little rough in some areas but I believe there are signs that tell you where. Yes, it is about 2.5 - 3 miles long and you can start at many different side streets. You might want to try starting at Ruggles or Narragansett Avenue as there is parking available there. The beginning is at the Chanler Hotel. YOu could probably park at Easton's Beach and go from there.
