tonymsrad Posted June 16, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 16, 2004 If you use US dollars to pay for a cab in Vancouver, which I believe are widely accepted, is it dollar for dollar? Because if is, it makes more sense to convert to Canadian, which sells for only .73 to the dollar.
cruiseryyc Posted June 16, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 16, 2004 If you use US$ to pay for a cab (or anything else) while in Canada, you will be assessed an exchange rate. And believe me, the exchange rate will not be as good as going to an ATM and getting some CDN$ out.
rduke Posted June 16, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 16, 2004 or you can go to your home bank before you leave a get some Canada $. You will not get a fair exchange rate by using US$ on the street in Vancouver!! Also, i do not know if vancouver has casino's but we were in Niagra falls and the rate they gave you was about 10 percent higher the anywhere else, almost $1.50 can to 1.00 us. Just don't stay in the casino after you exchange it LOL Until our Cruise Critic Group Alaska Cruise Come check out the links below for our Cruise Critic group cruise to Alaska - August 2004 http://messages.cruisecritic.com/2/OpenTopic?a=frm&s=927093444&f=9693034447 http://www.cruisecritic.com/interests/groups.cfm?ID=43 Carnival Holiday 1991 Norwegian Sea August 2001 Carnival Triumph August 2003 Celebrity Horizon October 2003
Tobin Posted June 16, 2004 #5 Share Posted June 16, 2004 If you are paying with US cash, it would be exchanged at a not very favorable rate. Any change you receive will be in Canadian $.
grouchy Posted June 16, 2004 #6 Share Posted June 16, 2004 If you take Black Top or Checker cabs-they will give you the best rate. They usually give a little less than the bank. Yesterday in the stores they were giving a rate of 72%. There are money exchanges in town and most banks are open for the morning on a Saturday. Time for another Cruise! Melissa_A Posted June 16, 2004 #7 Share Posted June 16, 2004 Is it better to exchange your US dollars in the states...or wait to do it at a Canadian bank? or does it matter? grouchy Posted June 16, 2004 #8 Share Posted June 16, 2004 Whatever is easier for you. We are a large city and the banks will give you the International rate for that day. You may get a better rate at your own bank. Time for another Cruise!
Target Posted June 16, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 16, 2004 Is this the same for the restaurants in Vancouver? Should we just use our CC? grouchy Posted June 16, 2004 #10 Share Posted June 16, 2004 You can use US funds almost any place-but smaller restaurants will not give a very good rate. Time for another Cruise!
mbisson Posted June 16, 2004 #11 Share Posted June 16, 2004 Actually (from my experience) a CC is probably the best way to insure you get the proper exchange rate. -Monte
quote:
Originally posted by Target: Is this the same for the restaurants in Vancouver? ell52 Posted June 16, 2004 #12 Share Posted June 16, 2004 My usual advice (which I follow when travelling) is to use your credit card whenever possible - but get some "walking around" cash in local currency for small item purchases like drinks, snacks & tipping. Whether you get it before you leave or when you arrive doesn't really matter. Depending on type of card, ATMs usually give very good rates. Banks give good rates, but sometimes assess a service charge. The WORST exchange rates are the ones given by retail establishments - and the smaller the place, the worse the exchange. In the end, do what is most convenient for yourself.
