ytrap2007 Posted November 23, 2007 #1 Share Posted November 23, 2007  Hey everyone, Has anyone ever been on a cruise where someone fell overboard? I was you-tubing and came across several videos where this actually happened. One guy was drunk and he and his wife had gotten into a fight and so he went overboard. According to the you-tube comments, he was arrested at port. So, I guess it is illegal to go overboard? Not sure what the legal ramifications are for that. Just thought I would ask if any of you dealt with this. Rebecca

bubbles1209 Posted November 23, 2007 #3 Share Posted November 23, 2007 This is from my Valor review of the cruise we were on the week of June 21st this past summer, it was on the last night and we had late seating 8:30. DH said, he just took a pretty hard left turn. I didn't think anything aboutit. We went down to the dining room which is at the back part of the ship. Everyone that's been on a cruise knows that when they slow down the ship, it vibrates in the back. Well, we're sitting there eating, and the vibrating gets worse and worse. I knew then, something wasn't right. Then we heard the announcement bell, and complete silence came over the dining room. They announced Sierra Team, deck 4, lifeboat 20. We wanted to know what was going on of course, so DH asked the waiter, and he told us the Yellow Team was the medical team. I was about to have a duck to go see what was going on (the kid in me), but stayed put and finished my dinner. We found out later that someone had gone overboard, but were pulled back up and they were o.k.......in lots of deep chit, but ok.
ytrap2007 Posted November 23, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted November 23, 2007 Oh my gosh! Part of me feels sorry for that person, but another part of me feels like it is a selfish thing and it puts others in danger. Duh! But, really, it is just wrong to do that. What happens to people like him? Arrested? He is lucky that he didn't get killed. Thanks for your response. I am just being nosey because I can't fathom this kinda thing... Rebecca I'm not sure what happens, as stated in the review, I heard he was in deep trouble, but don't know how much trouble. It is just wrong, we had to stop, turn around, go back, and look for him until found. Bad part is, on that very same cruise as we were getting started, we had to turn around and go help a Royal Caribbean ship search for someone. If I remember correctly I heard they weren't found. When several ships are close together in the ocean like that they all have to turn around and help the one in distress out. Yes, he was very lucky he didn't get killed. What gets me is that you have to be climbing, or seriously clowning around on your balcony to go over. All of the railings on deck are high enough that you would have to climb, and the ones on the balcony are slanted, but still tall enough that you would have to be climbing or doing some serious clowining around to go over, you just can't fall I don't think. Wow, we've had three uneventful cruises so far and hope to continue that. As for falling overboard, no, you can't just "fall" overboard. Usually, there's alcohol involved and climbing or sitting on the railings. The railings are desiged to be high enough on almost everyone so that even if you lean over, you can't fall over it. And, ships are required to respond to ships in distress if they're within a certain distance. It's maritime law.
bluejeans Posted November 23, 2007 #9 Share Posted November 23, 2007 Oh yeah! Brings back memories. My last cruise this March, a man overboard in the wee hours of the morning, we watched as the ship searched for him for over an hour. Woke up the next morning to find out he had been found, alive, off the shores of Florida. Really a strange feeling to be a part of that.
Thing2 Posted November 23, 2007 #10 Share Posted November 23, 2007 We have never seen anyone go overboard.............we did however see someone try to swim out to the ship. We were tendered in Belize back a few years ago and the ship was a tad closer to shore then they do now. I guess some women had a tad to much to drink and decided she didn't want to wait to be tendered out to ship so she started swimming............she made it to but the crew were not happy!!! irishgirl Posted November 23, 2007 #11 Share Posted November 23, 2007 I was on the Conquest last year when a man went overboard around 11:30 pm. We were in the show when the ship stopped. Announcements were made for 3 men, then an announcement was made for 1 man. Soon the CD announced we were going to go back to the spot where he jumped and start a search. We were in force 7 winds and the seas were 4-7 foot and very choppy due to the wind. The crew lowered several lifeboats to start the search. I will say, they looked like corks bobbing in the water. The ship started using side thrusters to move across the water and we went back and forth and around in circles searching with spotlights. Several other ships came from the oil rigs to help. We searched for 4 hours until the Coast Guard released us. The Coast Guard continued the search, but never found him. I don't want to go through that again. I don't think anyone slept much that night with the ship using side thrusters for 4 hours searching.

I can't imagine how long it would take to swim all that way! It took her a long time....we all stood on deck and watched. It was amazing. Boats started following her trying to get her in but she just kept on swimming. But they were not happy about it. But it was a great show for the rest of us!!! SunnyinMA Posted November 23, 2007 #15 Share Posted November 23, 2007 I was on the Liberty in July when this happened - it was the weirdest feeling ever to stand at the rails and wonder if someone was drowning out there: Rockville Teacher Jumps From Cruise Ship Off Fla. Frost Middle School Educator, 27, Rescued After 36-Foot Leap By Mariana Minaya Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, July 3, 2007; Page B02 Middle school science teacher Scott Durbin of Rockville apparently had spent Sunday evening drinking with friends aboard Carnival's Liberty cruise ship off the coast of Boca Raton, Fla., when he went onto the deck of the 3,500-passenger vessel. Then, said FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela, Durbin "got into a life raft and took the ax and started to cut through the ropes." When a security officer tried to get him out, Durbin jumped. Overboard. That's 36 feet down from a moving ship. "It's like hitting concrete when you hit the water," Coast Guard spokesman Luis Diaz said. The ship's crew threw life rings and jackets. A Coast Guard cutter, which was nine miles away, reached him about an hour later. "This person is very fortunate," Diaz said. "The rescue was almost immediate, and that was to his benefit." Durbin, 28, who works at Robert Frost Middle School, was taken to a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Diaz said. He could not be reached for comment. His grandfather, Wayne Durbin Sr. of Bakerton, Pa., said that he had not spoken to his grandson but that he believed he was fine. "I guess he's all right, the way I understand it," Wayne Durbin said. "He's pretty well shook up, but . . . he's all right." Montgomery County schools spokesman Brian Edwards said he could not confirm that Scott Durbin was on the ship, but he said Durbin has taught sixth- and seventh-grade science at Robert Frost in Rockville since 2002. Durbin is starting a new job as a student-support specialist, an entry-level administrative position in which he will deal with disciplinary matters, Edwards said. "He was a really nice teacher," said Jordie Halevy, 15, who had him as a teacher in the sixth grade. "Overall, nobody really had any problems with him. It doesn't seem like him." The ship had left Fort Lauderdale on Sunday afternoon for a six-day cruise to Freeport in the Bahamas, according to a statement from Carnival Cruise Lines. About 11:30 p.m., Coast Guard officials received a call that a man had jumped from a cruise ship. When they arrived, they found Durbin in the water 50 miles east of Boca Raton. Almost Packed Posted November 24, 2007 #16 Share Posted November 24, 2007 i love my life! i am so very happy with it....so this is not a suicidal wish....just hear me out ok.... dh & i were on our first cruise this year. i was sitting on our balcony. i'm very short, so i took the small little side table, placed it on top of the chair, and made myself a "booster" chair so i could see over the top of the railing. i had my chair up against the window...so i was not near the railing. but when i sat in the chair (with out the "booster) the top of the railing was in my sight line. that bothered me! so while sitting in my booster seat, i could see the water....and just watching the waves churn and turn, and that white foam, and that beautiful sea ....i was hypnotized i tell you!! i was drawn to that water...i wanted to jump in it!:D  YES, just dive right off my balcony!! I HAD TO MAKE A CONSCIOUS EFFORT NOT TO! i just had a strong desire to jump into that water. it was so inviting and so peaceful and beautiful. i wonder if anyone else has ever felt this way. maybe all of our jumpers were just hypnotized also....hmmm. am i crazy? lol:confused:

Grits53 Posted November 24, 2007 #18 Share Posted November 24, 2007 My daughter was on the Conquest in Oct. 06, when a man was walking on the rail from balcony to balcony, in an attempt to get into his room, because he had left his S&S behind. It was raining. He slipped and fell into the water and was not recovered. My DD heard some of the staff talking, and they said the water was churning with sharks, and the rescue divers couldn't even get into the water because of them. He paid the ultimate price for stupidity. Then last March, when my friend and I were on the Fantasy, we had to turn around and help look for the couple who fell off another ship, I believe it was a Princess ship. Now, you tell me how a man and woman fell off a ship together, and both were naked when rescued..... Anyway, their stupidity caused our ship to be 2 hours late getting to port, which messed up our excursion and caused us to miss snorkeling, which we had looked forward to very much. So those are my two experiences with MOB.

Remember, that water is not a peaceful place. Moving through the water at 20 mph or so, and falling from the height of a passenger deck, the impact with the water would probably kill you instantly. As you hit the water, a part of you would stop with the water and the other part in the air would still be traveling at 20 mph, so you would get all broken up and probably drown on the spot. Crew quarters are lower to the water, so if someone were to fall from there it would be a better chance to survive, but not from up high while moving. I don't think any jumpers are 'moths to a flame'... I think they are drunks, psychos, or old folks with terminal illness.
