It is all up to you but I think that your waitstaff and room steward like the instant gratification. Also if you want to add more for exceptional service you can. nance

I like to carry tip envelopes with me, when I go to dinner. I'll write the waiters' names on them on the first night and leave them out where they can be seen. If all goes well, I'll let them see me slipping a coupld crisp new $2 bills in the envelops. If we have problems, they might see me taking some of those bills back out.

 

 

 

Just kidding . . . . I don't think it really matters too much. I generally use the shipboard account, myself, because of the convenience of it. If we had good service, which we usually do, we'll add a little bit extra in cash, along with the tip vouchers.

we like to charge it to the seapass...I am glad I still get to hand them a tip envelope, but its easier not to have to mess with getting cash. A lot of the time, the cash we take is gone after the ports and I cant stand $4 ATM fees

if you want cash you can get it at the casino. There is a limit (no sure how much)...just don't tell the cashier what you are using the money for. That way you do not have to use the ATM's.;)

The limit is $2,000/day. I just got off the Liberty and took $3,000 out total from the casino, stuck it in my safe, and deposited it today in my bank. That's 3,000 free miles on my Northwest Card. I would have taken more, but I don't like to carry that much cash.

We tip in cash--that way, the waitstaff can do as they please with the money--it doesn't have to go through the RCI payroll dept (like pre-paying does) and they don't have to wait until the next pay cycle to send the money home. (Which is what 99% of them do with the cash!)

I prefer the shipboard account. The ship gives out envelopes to give to your waiters, room attendant, etc. with notices indicating that a gratuity has been reserved for them. They are aware of this option and appreciate receiving these notices, as there are some who may try to leave without tipping or undertipping. Moreover, if I feel they deserve extra, I can put additional $$$ in these envelopes, as was done when my wife and I cruised to Alaska on the Radiance last September. In fact, our waiter told us that once a passenger asked for his address and promised to send him his tip, as he had lost his money inthe Casino (this was before the option existed) -- the ability to charge the gratuities would prevent this type of excuse.:)

I like to leave the ship with as much cash as possible, in case there are unexpected surprises during our trip home.

We add the tips onto our ship board account towards the end of the cruise. We receive the vouchers in our stateroom a couple of days before the cruise concludes which we then place into the envelopes to be handed to the servers the final night. If we feel anyone has gone beyond the call of duty we will add a little extra to the envelope.
