excursions, to book or not to book?

We are going on the Valor over Christmas. I was wondering is it better to book excursions thru Carnival or do my own research and book them myself online. We are looking forward to diving a lot, but want to spend the least amount of money possible. I know it is cheaper to do it myself, has anyone booked their own? Have you had a good experience?

90% of the time we book on our own and are very happy once in blue moon we will book on the ship. But it all pretty much boils down to what makes you feel the most comfortable..:)
