Why are some P & O and some Princess

I just wondered what P & O stood for and if it makes a difference.

I am looking at a cruise out of Australia July 09 on the Sun. They never seem to give the discounted deposits, etc. on those.

I had noticed someone mentioned it was a P & O ship. Then today my on-line travel agent said the deposit wasn't lowered like others because it is P & O.

???????

It is listed as the Princess Sun.

P & O stands for Peninsular & Orient Steam Navigation Company.

History of P&O Cruises

The Company That Invented Cruising

Founded in 1837, the ships of P&O Cruises have been cruising the seas of the world for over 160 years, from those early days P&O undertook voyages described as ‘excursions,’ the forerunners of today’s cruising when passengers from England regularly travelled with the Royal Mails to ports on the Iberian Peninsular and the Mediterranean, returning home on other P&O mail voyages.

P&O’s sister company the Orient Line first introduced regular cruising from the United Kingdom in the 1880s with the CHIMBORAZO and GARRONE to Baltic and Northern ports, while P&O’s first dedicated cruise ship was the 1904 VECTIS of 5,500 tons, which carried 180 passengers. When P&O pioneered cruising from Australia in 1932 the new 23,000-ton mail steamer STRATHAIRD carried 1,100 passengers on the first cruise to Brisbane and Norfolk Island.

Thanks. :)

I JUST realized they are actually listed here on the list of cruises. I was rushing back to apologize for my stupidity and to tell people they didn't need to respond. ugh.

OK I will go read about P& O. The thing is I would have never known that it was a P & O cruise from everything I have seen.

I will go read what I can find. I just don't know why P & O isn't mentioned anywhere when you book the cruise. I will figure it out.

The difference is Princess is primarily marketed in North America, & P&O is aimed at the British.

Don't forget the Aussies and there is also P&O Australia.

It does get a bit confusing with them now offering the P&O cruises on the Princess website without actually alerting you to this fact. Just keep in mind that onboard, these ships also charge in Aussie Dollars and there are a few changes onboard, and charges for things, we are used to getting free of charge on Princess.

..and to confuse me more.. I went to the P & O forum

There is a sticky there about the Princess Sun.

IF I understand it correctly, that ship will only be a P & O ship for a brief period of time, and then will be a Princess ship again around the month of May 08. Why the heck???

Therefore I wonder if after May they may offer shipboard credits, etc. like Princess often offers. What about the outlets? They can't change them for a brief period of time. Then again maybe it isn't becoming a Princess ship again.

CONFUSING......

Again I am not sailing until July 09, but can a ship change like that for just a short period of time?

What extras do you pay for that you normally get free, if it is a P & O ship?

I think you need to be careful about names.

There is (AFAIK) no ship called Princess Sun.

There is a Princess ship called Sun Princess, which is doing some time in Australia. I believe that she will remain a Princess ship, but the cruises will be modelled on the Australian model rather than the standard Princess model - things like currency, tipping and so on.

P&O Cruises Australia also has a different ship called Pacific Sun.

So you need to make sure you are reading about the correct ship.
