Did anyone notice anything weird with the John Lawrence DVD?

I have had it a week, so I wouldn't feel right saying something is wrong now with it. I am technologically ignorant, so it may be me.

I put it in my Vista laptop (in case the type of computer matters). The introduction is fine. The video of his interview is perfect. Picture is clear.. but it dawned on me it is probabl a video..where the rest are photographs.

Then I clicked on Helsinki, and the photos appear weird. It shows a photo. Then when it starts talking about the next place in Helsinki, you can see part of the old photo kind of superimposed over the new photo. It remains kind of jumbled until IMMEDIATELY before the photo changes again. Then you see the picture clearly for a couple of seconds, but really soon it is superimposed over the next photo you are suppose to be viewing.

I figure I can still take notes on the places, etc. The sound is fine. It is just kind of hard to watch.

I am not sure if it is me or the way it is made. I will take it to work next week and see if it can be played in a work computer.

However, I thought someone might have insight on the issue.

I didn't notice anything like this with my copy, but the only portion I "watched" intensly was the St. Petersburg part. Hope it works better for you in another machine.

Ummm oops.

I never thought that people might be watching it on a real dvd player. I talked to a techie just now, and he said.. It is probably the computer. ;) I do have a dvd player. It has been used once and is hooked to a big old t.v. with rabbit ears in the family room. I knew there was a reason I had that t.v.!!!!!!

Thanks. :-)

Mine was fine. If it doesn't work on the dvd player send it back or send John an email. It was a great resource for this cruise.

I watched it on the tv, and had no problem. However, as I approached the very end of St. Petersburg (the longest segment), I touched the wrong key, and could not get the dvd to move forward to the desired spot. I did take it to another set and dvd player, and I was able to jump around with no problem.

It works fine. As soon as I called my niece and asked her what button to push to get the dvd to work with the t.v. it played fine.

Sigh......technology

It really is a good dvd. I can't believe all the information.

Well, I read and reread your post to make sure I understood your problem. It has been a while, but I believe they are all pictures and no moving video of anywhere. I did not have any superimposing problems. I would try your copy on a different computer to see if there is a problem with the disk. The format is simple. He posts a picture and talks about the area and sometimes he will have a picture up and discuss more than what the picture entails, but it is still a pretty good guide.

Also you may wish to check out Rick Steve's book. It is very interesting also and goes into much more depth about each port.

It works perfectly with the t.v.

I am ordering the Rick Steve's book, but I am waiting until April 7 to get the new edition. :)

The 2007 edition has some video to it and a few additions to the 2006 edition. I had both of them.

I have the Rick Steve's book and I think you will find it to be an invaluable resource for your upcoming trip. Good move on getting it.

Maybe I missed it on an earlier post, but what is the cost for the DVD, where to get it, is it really worth it, etc.? I've done lots of other research, have the wonderful Eyewitness books with their great pictures and maps, etc., for these Baltic areas, plus other books from Rick Steves, Fodors, Frommers, etc. How highly do you rate it and its need/value?

THANKS! Terry in Ohio
