Don't do it. You have to go through british customs, I beieve in Tortola, and then to Jost Van Dyke and then on the way back you have to go through USA immigration. A lot of great places on the beach in St Thomas for lunch and drinks. Go to the Ritz Carlton, it is fantastic and probably will cost less than what you would have to spend on a private charter to jost van dyke.

It is really easier to get there from Tortola....so you'll just have to plan a cruise that take you there :D

Getting from St. Thomas to Jost van Dyke for lunch and drinks is easy and a fun adventure. You’ll get to see the islands from a remarkable perspective and visit off-beat locations. You can also go snorkeling at some great spots. There are a number of comfortable 25- to 35-foot boats for rent. In Redhook there are several companies that rent boats with experienced captains who have extensive local knowledge. The local captains know the area well and will tailor the day to suit your expectations. The round-trip taxi to Redhook, the boat, a captain and the fuel as well as the necessary BVI & US customs and immigration fees is around $900 for the day. That’s about $150 per person for a group of 6. Best of all; the local captain is responsible for the boat! Party on! You have a designated driver who is also a tour guide! Food, booze & stylish souvenirs are extra. Spending the day doing what you want to do is priceless ;-0

"You will need to bring your passport to travel to any of the BVI. So if you don't already have one you will need to get one before you go."

Not true, according to the U.S. Department of State, http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html,

LAND AND SEA TRAVEL

The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.

  • CURRENTLY:
U.S. citizens need to present either (a) a passport, passport card (available in spring 2008), or WHTI-compliant document; or (b) a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.
  • LATER:
On June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document.

Note: The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory.

ALL PERSONS traveling by air outside of the United States are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States.

How much time do you have there? You will want to go to Foxy's Say Hi to Foxy) and then hike on over to White Bay to see Ivan at Ivan's stress free bar and campground and then down to the soggy dollar bar. And that's just the beginning. Jost Van Dyke is an awesome place.

If their ship is in port between 7:00AM and 5:00 PM, they'll be off the ship by about 8:00-9:00 and have to be back on board NLT 4:30. And you have to allow for rush hour on your return trip. Unfortunatley, that does not not leave them with a lot of time to spend on Jost. :(

When you get off the ship by 9am, you can be on the dock in Redhook by 9:45. Most people make it off the ship early and get to Redhook before 9am. After a few minutes filling out paperwork and getting some ice-cold beverages, you can be boating the beautiful blue Caribbean on your way to Jost, which is about 30 to 45 minutes away. British Virgin Islands Customs and Immigration are located just down the beach from Foxy’s. Then it’s a nice boat ride around the point to anchor in White Bay for Ivan’s and the Soggy Dollar. When you leave Jost by 3pm there is plenty of time to clear U.S. Customs & Border Patrol and re-fuel the boat before heading back to the ship, arriving NLT 4:30. You could spend around 5 or 6 hours on Jost van Dyke. Then again, there’s all those other beautiful Virgins just a short boat ride away ;-)
