Does NCL honor price drops?

Recommended Posts

We paid for our March cruise in full when we booked it and actually saw prices rise in the weeks before we sailed. If NCL honours a price drop before final payment, do they not also pass on prices increases before final payment?

Price drops are only honored by request. I'm sure if you called and requested to pay the increased fare they would be happy to allow you to do that... you may need to speak to several people before you found someone that really understood you would like to pay more for the same thing though. :)

My June 1 Dawn cruise dropped almost $1,000 after final payment. I called my TA and she said NCL is one of the only lines that does not provide the lower price.

Is she wrong? Should I call NCL?

Yikes - that's a HUGE difference! But I heard the same thing from my TA ... but my TA is a "she" too so maybe we have the same one, LOL! I was wondering if they would give OBC if the rates dropped? I know they sometimes call to offer a cabin upsell but I'm more wondering about OBC.

I believe she is wrong. I know of no major cruise line that honors price drops after final payment as a matter of regular policy.

Are exceptions made in some cases? I suspect they could be... I have heard anecdotal accounts in which onboard credit was claimed to have been granted (by NCL and other lines). I've heard of many more cases where no consideration was given. That said, if you call I would neither count on nor expect some from of correction / compensation.

WOW .....what a good way to tick people off. I made final payment on a CC two years ago and two weeks before sailing the price dropped $200 per ticket. I was told the check would be sent out to us. I never heard of them sending out a check but when we got home from the cruise the check for $800 from CC was in hand.

Sorry Paul, you are incorrect. RCCL, CEL,CCl all honor price drops after final payment...on a regular basis (as long as it is not a promo for new bookings only). I have gotten NCL upgrades after fp ...though...it was hard and took quite a while, but they did upgrade my clients due to a price drop. They normally won't..

We recently noticed that our upcoming Dawn cruise (June 8th) dropped by $500. I called my TA, who called NCL. They did not refund any money. But, they did add an on board credit of $200. We already had an OBC of $150 as part of the promo when we booked. So, we now have a total of $350. That's close enough for me! I was thrilled. I was expecting my TA to say "sorry, that's a no-go."

This topic totally facinates me. I have heard people say that other cruise lines will honor a price drop after final payment, but how do they do it?

We all know what those drastic price drops are for...to fill the ship. It is a marketing tactic to draw those in that can take advantage of last minute sailings. It makes perfect sense that sailing with a full ship makes more revenue. Even if they heavily discount the left over cabins, they will still make money off those passengers with the casino, drinks, excursions, etc. What I don't understand is that if a cruise line automatically honors those prices for everyone who calls in and requests it, how do they survive financially? It would seem to me to be poor business practice (financially). What if all 2000 people called in and wanted the price drop?

I know that NCL doesn't do this, and I understand why, but even regarding OBC. What if every passenger called in and wanted OBC for the price reduction?

I would think that once final payment is done...it's a done deal. But with other cruise lines that's obviously not the case and even as far as NCL, it seems that if you call and bug them enough, they will give you something in the form of OBC.

I just don't understand how they do it.

You gave me a real out loud laugh after a long, stressful day at work handling one deadline after another! Thank you Falken! I love your sense of humour!

I trust that you know better, but I believe that my statement was to "policy" and not just practice.

In any case, do you know of any documentation from the cruise line that states this is their "official policy"? I've been unable to find it on their web sites. If it's not published, it seems that these procedures could be applied in a fairly arbitrary manner.

Also, do you believe this practice varies based on direct bookings versus those through a TA?

No she is right, well she is part right, they are not the only ones, but no, they do not honor rate drops after final payment. I had a reservations agent tell me a few weeks ago they wuold do an upgrade of OBC thought; well I called back a few days later and asked for that in writing: needless to say, they backed down. This is one of the few times I have been really ticked with NCL.

I wasn't ticked because they wouldn't honor a drop, I was ticked because an agent said they would when indeed they would not.

RCI and Celebrity will sometimes, not always. On a regular basis I don't know of any other lines that gives them.

Who knows!! I couldn't believe my eyes when Carnival sent me an $800 dollar check for the four of us. I would have been happy with a ship credit.....still can't figure out why I was sent out a check for the difference.
