What to buy in Nassau?

Recommended Posts

I'm going with a group of friends on Majesty in June. A couple of the girls are very interested in shopping in Nassau, especially for purses and jewlery. I've been to Nassau, but the only thing I bought was rum cake :p ...it was good, though! Anyway, I'd appreciate any tips from all you experienced shoppers, to pass along to my friends.

Also...any "must do's" that aren't on the excursion list?

We bought a rum cake and the paper. We browsed many jewelry stores for the the diamond /emerald we saw in St Martin. Didnt' find it  I was not impressed with this port for many reasons. I doubt I would go back there. Go see Atlantis - it's wonderful. Say you have been there and done that. Check out the excursions

Nothing but straw market items ... and not many of them.

Not so, by all means bypass the strawmarket and shop on their "Main St" for 1st quality items. Most items have a set price, very little bargining. Shops clerks were very friendly and not agressive.

We found some nice oil paintings from a local artist.

DW and I took a glass bottom boat tour and the area they let us off had a lot of small shops with local crafts. One man was pushing a pot pipe and the guy in the next booth said if you bought one of his he would fill it free the first time. No sale!

Nassau is our least favorite port. It's a great day to stay on the ship and use what you've paid for! There's really no great shopping bargains there.

Geez, You guys are scaring me. That is one of our stops. We are taking our grandchildren. We do not plan on staying on the ship. We'd like this trip to be sort of edcuational, culture thing and all.

Our first trip, we did one of the planned tours...that included the Forts, Queen's staircase, and water tower. Another one, we just wandered through the straw market and took a carriage ride. I see that they have segway tours if everyone in your group is over 10...that would be a neat experience. There is a planned pirate tour if the kids like stuff like that. If you don't see anything in the tours you like, go to the Library and get a Foders and plan your own!

Another time we go, we may try one of the resorts, but to me that is not why I would go to Nassau. Have fun and enjoy your grandchildren! Maybe they have some ideas of what they want to see.

My advice is to stay away from Breezes resort! That was the biggest waste of $100/pp I could imagine. We actually left early and took a bus(using this word loosely) back to town and strolled around. Didn't really find any bargains but it was a nice time. Some shops are REALLY pushy but the up-scale ones are not. I want to try either Atlantis our the history tour. The booze cruise looked fun too. Have fun...it's not that bad! ;)

Thanks. In all honesty Nassau is not one of my favorite ports, either. I know some ports are know for good buys on certain items. I was hoping Nassau had something I didn't know about. If you are buying jewlery, how are the sales onboard compared to Nassau??

A short walk up the hill to the Governor's residence and a block or two the right will bring you to Greycliffe where you can consider purchase of fine wine and cigars if you are so inclined.

We were there 2 years ago in July. Did the carriage tour (DD then 12 loved it). Took in the pirates museum (your grandkids will love it). Then hired a guide (man standing around the terminal) and explored the island--did the historical stops, answered all 4,000 questions DD and DH asked, then took us out to Atlantis to see the hotel, Aquarium. Really nice man, can't remember his name at the moment.

There is a small "stall" shop in the terminal itself that sells counch jewelry--but these items are made by disabled adults (Downs Syndrome, etc). I choose to buy the earrings DD wanted there, same price as anywhere else. My nephews enjoyed the Del Sol keychains, too.

It's not my favorite place, but it can be a fun, somewhat educational day.

Have a great time!

Atlantis is a beautiful resort. I believe it's called the DIG where they have all kinds of fish. I think your grandchildren would love it. I don't know how much it costs to visit there, though. The straw market is great if you need to pick up souvenirs. I would take my grandchildren with me there.

The straw market is nothing to right home about, if you've never been you should walk around a bit. I got a "Prada" wallet for $12.00;) .

The Atlantis is amazing, but we like to take a seperate vacation there. Tons o' fun stuff to do.

Pirate tour/museum or Atlantis water park would be best with kids--pricey but probably worth it-

-lots of pushy people just getting out of the port area--

the straw market is a tourist & fire trap

we have done a few tours in the past but recently had a nice lunch & swim with a day pass at british Colonial Hilton--walkable from the ship-- if you don't want to swim can just have a nice lunch & drinks & watch the channel & docked ships...

I'm leaving on a 4-night trip to Coco Cay and Nassau with my DH, children and 6-year-old grands on Monday aboard The Sovereign.

I booked a room for the day at the Comfort Suites next door to Atlantis. We will check in to that room by 9:30 a.m. At 10 a.m. we go to the dolphin swim. 4 swimmers, 2 watchers.

After that we go back to the hotel so Poppy (who is slightly disabled) can take a rest and watch some tv... maybe mosey over to the casino. Meanwhile, the kids and grands get the Atlantis wrist bands that come with the room and go have a good time at the waterpark.

When they've had enough of that, we hope they'll have the energy to check out The Digs with us.

It cost me nearly 1000 bucks to set up this dream day for this gang, on top of the cruise itself. Maybe I'm not so smart. It might have been cheaper to celebrate all these birthdays individually!:D:D

Anyway, I'll let you know how it goes.
