clamgirl Posted May 10, 2008 #1 Share Posted May 10, 2008 I am a first-time cruiser and feel lost. Leaving for the Western Med soon and don't know what is best to see or what to bring. Any help would be appreciated.
7toEleven Posted May 10, 2008 #2 Share Posted May 10, 2008 Wow, this is a loaded question!! Where in the Med are you going? Go to the Ports of Call-Europe and you will find LOTS of very helpful information there. We went last year and I can't even imagine not having that as such a helpful resource in planning our trip. Good luck you have lots of work to do, but enjoy!
vivian02 Posted May 10, 2008 #3 Share Posted May 10, 2008 Clamgirl, I have some good advice for you. Since this is your first cruise and it sounds like your first trip to Europe listen carefully. Make sure before you leave on your trip that you have some Euros. Yes ATM's are probably the cheapest way to exchange currency but in Itally on that first day you will be jet lagged. Having Euros in your pocket will make things alot easier. On your flight to Rome try to get some sleep. Two to three hours of sleep makes a big difference. Don't be afraid to use the local transportation. From the Airport (FCO) to Rome Terminal (Train Station) can be done for 12 euros per person. If you are spending the night in Rome there is a taxi stand outside of the train station. If your not spending the night then its 9 euros to get to Civitecchia by train. "What ever you do don't take a taxi from the airport to the port"! That is unless you want to spend at least $200 Euros...thats around $260 US currency. As for doing excursions on your own Naples is great for going to Pompii or Capri on your own. The same goes for Livorno, take the train to Florence for the day or take a short train ride to Pisa. This can be done very cheaply and the atmosphere is just so amazing. At the smaller ports in Turkey and the Greek Islands its easy to just spend the day window shopping or exploring the country side. Make sure to take a good camera and you will have the most fantastic time of your life. Do remember this: If for any reason you think that ship tour is too expensive "how often do you get to Europe? Don't be afraid to use the local transportation and your imagination. These Meditterean Cruises are wonderful. Tim
ItaliaAmerCruzLady Posted May 11, 2008 #4 Share Posted May 11, 2008 Clamgirl, I dont know when you are sailing, but go to the roll calls and see who else is on your sailing, you may be able to jump on some privately run excursions or at the very least meet some fellow travelers to commiserate with. They have loads of advise and ideas. Have a great cruise!;)
