hulahoops Posted July 31, 2008 #1 Share Posted July 31, 2008 Do they show sports on any of the TVs on cruise? In the bars or something?
cb at sea Posted July 31, 2008 #2 Share Posted July 31, 2008 Mostly soccer--ick! If there is a major event (Superbowl, etc...) they will try to play it, but don't count on a regular season game of anything except soccer!
DPurcell58 Posted July 31, 2008 #3 Share Posted July 31, 2008 In Feb. we saw the Daytona 500 on the Explorer.
GMoney Posted July 31, 2008 #4 Share Posted July 31, 2008 It depends on your cruise destination. Assuming you're cruising to the Caribbean, then you will likely get a healthy diet of ESPN Deportes, hence the comment on soccer. The programming is available in your stateroom and in some bars. Some ships will pick up certain games and events; it just all depends - no rhyme or reason to it.
reallyitsmema Posted July 31, 2008 #5 Share Posted July 31, 2008 They will show major games if they can get them via satellite. I have seen the Patriots on the Sovereign and just watched the Celtics on the Mariner in June.

negc Posted July 31, 2008 #7 Share Posted July 31, 2008 Mostly soccer--ick! If there is a major event (Superbowl, etc...) they will try to play it, but don't count on a regular season game of anything except soccer! This is most definitely not true:rolleyes:. We have seen Major League Baseball games during the regular season as well as Sunday afternoon, evening and Monday night football games on many of our cruises in September, October, November and December. They don't limit their programming merely to the playoffs. Some ships like the Radiance class ships and some of the Voyager class have a designated sports bar while others will show sporting events on the TVs in the various bars and lounges. When they do, you can also watch the game on your stateroom TV. Just last December we watched NFL football games in the casino bar onboard the Enchantment of the Seas. A few years ago we watched a regular season game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots while onboard Jewel of the Seas. Depending on where you are cruising, they may only be able to carry ESPN Deportes (the Spanish ESPN channel) but we have watched the NFL Monday night games and they carried to US (English language) feed with only the commercials in Spanish. Your viewing options will not be limited solely to soccer. If you are watching CNN International and they come to the sports report, you do need to be aware that when the sportscaster says:"And in football today", he will probably follow up with a report on the results of the soccer game between Manchester United and some other team.:D
labeachcomber Posted July 31, 2008 #8 Share Posted July 31, 2008 Leaving on the Serenade next week, right at the start of the Olympics! Hoping that RC tv has some coverage. After all, we're only in Alaska and not in the middle of the Caribbean. Is it too much to hope for?
sdmike Posted July 31, 2008 #9 Share Posted July 31, 2008 We had ESPN and a couple of network channels on our Vision cruise. I saw that a couple of baseball games were on during our trip, but I was too busy to watch them. :)
Sky616 Posted July 31, 2008 #10 Share Posted July 31, 2008 They had the national championship in Men's college basketball on the other year. That is a big sports event. March Madness is the best.

Britnatize Posted July 31, 2008 #12 Share Posted July 31, 2008 What's the possibility of seeing a Thurday night, SEC, college football game when you're in the Carribean? Doesn't sound good to me. I was sure that we'd be able to pick it up...comments down sound to promising.

March Madness is the best. 2 years ago Spring Break we were in the Caribbean and lots of guys were in the sports bar watching the tournament. TONS of fun. 2009 tourney starts March 17th. We will be in Cozumel on the VOS. They better have it on or i'm swimming back to Galveston.
JimandPamm Posted July 31, 2008 #14 Share Posted July 31, 2008 We were on the Mariner in June and they showed almost nothing but soccer and Ricky Nelson's kids. The U. S. Open Golf Tournament was taking place, but no luck in either the cabin or the sports (?) bar.

You must have been sailing during the Euro Cup, a HUGE soccer event in Europe and heavily viewed throughout the world. We just returned from Alaska and Serenade has ESPN WHEN THEY COULD GET THE SAT FEED. Oftentimes that channel (19) was just blank or pixelating. I would think the Caribbean would show ESPN college football Thursday night.

They won't be offering the variety of college football games and conferences that you may see at home, but any games that ESPN shows with regularity is most likely going to be available.:)
crznokw Posted July 31, 2008 #18 Share Posted July 31, 2008 We were on the Mariner Western on 7/13/08 and got nothing except European Soccer and Asian X-games on ESPN. I thought we would get the MLB All-Star game or the Home Run Derby but we didn't. Since Fox carried those games and not ESPN, that might have been the reason.:) Don't know what, if any contractual arrangements the cruiselines have with Fox. aujimw Posted August 1, 2008 #20 Share Posted August 1, 2008 I wouldn't suppose there's much of a track record of the European cruises carrying the US ESPN feed then with college football coverage in the fall?
TEXASMUNK Posted August 1, 2008 #21 Share Posted August 1, 2008 You know, the one where Mommy is afraid little Johnny might get hurt so he cannot play football, or little Billy is a klutz and cannot play baseball, so mommy puts them in soccer so they can run up and down the field and pretend they are playing a "real" sport. outowrk Posted August 1, 2008 #24 Share Posted August 1, 2008 The Explorer OTS has a large amount of Jersey people. Two years ago most of them were crammed into the sports bar for a Yankee-Red Sox game. Loud and rowdy, lots of fun.
logan1_2000 Posted August 1, 2008 #25 Share Posted August 1, 2008 Im hoping they have the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day. we watched the NFL thanksgiving day games on Radiance in 2006, and it was very interesting because we were getting the live feed, no commercials at all, so we saw/heard all the off-air comments in the booth during commercial time. that was shown in the sportsbar forward of the casino. we watched Tiger win the PGA in the schooner bar on sovereign last summer. can't speak about ESPN thursday night because I just dont know what the international feed might be for that, if any. but yes, as others have reported, there has been an english language feed even when the graphics and commercials have been en espanol. I've watched NFL playoffs and NCAA final four as well, but those were on Disney--though I imagine disney's access to the various international feeds would be the same as RCI. Though when they carried the womens final four, which is broadcast on ESPN in the states, I wondered if it was because Disney and ESPN are part of the same corporation. watched the USC-Texas BCS title game on radiance in january 2006, too, I recall, and that is carried on FOX domestically, though I just don't recall what the source feed was. Sometimes there are actually different english language broadcasters for an international english language feed compared to the US tv broadcast team. Enjoy the cruise, hope you get to see a game if that is what you want to do, and hope there are lots of other fun choices available in case your preferred game is not on.
