Trunk Bay on your own - a word of caution

We did Trunk Bay on our own from St. Thomas - and it was beautiful and we arrived well before the excursions. However, one word of caution - this was much more expensive than I was anticipating. For 2 adults and 4 kids, taxi to red hook: $60, Ferry $36, Taxi to Trunk Bay $36, so about $130 one way, $260 round trip, plus a small admission to the park. None of the taxis or ferries take credit cards nor would they take $100 bills, so you need to go with lots of $20 bills. I looked hard for cheaper taxi ($2) in St Thomas as someone suggested, but they are not there, the rates are printed and set in each taxi. So make sure you take enough cash to get back to the ship !!! We saved a little bit by taking the afternoon ferry back to downtown rather than to red hook. However, this is a very long walk back to the ship, and with kids we took another taxi. This taxi turned out to be a really long taxi ride (with the ship in view the whole time) due to lots of road construction in downtown and near the pier.

For not much more than that, we took a catarmaran to st John to a deserted side of the Island, They met us at the pier and gave us lunch and drinks and provided snorkeling stuff. We did the full day but there are 1/2 day cruises.

jamscckmc,

With whom did you book your catamaran to St. John adventure? Was it a private excursion, or were you booked with others? It sounds great!

http://www.interlinesail.com has a wonderful sailing trip from Red Hook over to St. John. Capt. Omar and Jan are the best! They'll feed you, the boat is lovely, and you'll anchor off St. John and snorkel to your heart's content. We've done that excursion twice -- enjoyed it so much the first time we booked again with friends the next time we were in St. Thomas. And the money sounds about the same.

Now that's too bad:( We have never paid more than $10-15 for a taxi from the pier to the ferry @ Redhook. Even on the Crown Princess, which docks on the other side of Charlotte Amalie the taxi was at most, $20.

However, Trunk Bay is spectacular and I do hope that all six of you had a great time?
