Live News from Galveston

That is sad.:(

Flagship can go IMHO.

I agree with you. The Flagship is not a hotel/motel, is not on the top of my list of places to stay :D . I prefer Moody Gardens or the San Luis, but there are a lot of cruisers that stay in that hotel, as they offer free parking.

The San Luis sustained considerable damage. It was supposedly considered the safest place in Galveston & all the emergency personnel & news crews were staying there. The Balinese Room is totally destroyed along with Hooters & a souvineer shop. Big hunks of asphalt were torn out of Seawall Blvd. & the bridge to the Flagship Hotel collapsed. The West End is under water & there's no electricity or water. I don't think any cruise ships will be docking in Galveston on Monday. They'll still be trying to clean up the island.

You know what the locals say about the crab on Gaidos. I wonder if it survived. If so, all will be well and I suspect it did, I haven't heard of any serious injuries, which is great news. Galvestonians are good folk, they will have it running again soon.

I'm hoping they will now totally redo Flagship It's a great location, now we just need a great hotel there.:)

The biggest problem right now is the debris left over. The roads are impassable. So, the emergency crews are clearing the debris ONLY so they can get the POWER back on. ONLY so they can get to any victims. Galveston downtown is currently STILL underwater. The residents have been without water for nearly 24 hours; power for 15. The secondary roads may be unpassable for a while...They are not letting anyone ON THE ISLAND unless they are emergency personnel. Not business owners, not homeowners, and not cruise passengers. I know Carnival is trying to be optimistic and trying to keep 3000 people aboard, right now, from coming out of their skins, but the aren't coming back to Galveston tomorrow. For those of you booked soon, stay in touch with Carnival. You cannot change flights and hotel reservations until Carnival makes an official announcement, and I suspect they are cranking some serious overtime right now. One of the shots off CNBC panned the pier area and part of the pier is missing - cant dock to a partial pier. The engineers (once they are allowed to go back to Galveston once the roads are cleared and deemed safe) will assess when the ship can come back. They will be docking elsewhere. For a while. BUT GALVESTON is a unique group of people; they will rebuild. They will be back in business ASAP. But the loss of life and property is first priority. Sorry.

Now, does anyone have a link to that bar shown on FOX news where the knuckleheads are partying?

The bar is called the "Poop Deck". It was just on Fox and they said they have tried to call the bar to see how the folks made out but have been unable to contact them.

Correct me if I'm wrong on the ships used after Katrina. They were not used for those that were victims and had lost their homes. They were used for the workers that were there to help get NOLA's infrastructure back going again.

Steph, the ships were used as a base for First-responders ie;Police, Firefighters, etc.*

* They too were "victims" and lost their homes.

My nephew and a friend of his have been working over in MS lately, and they have both come back with staph infections. I've heard of many getting staph infections after being in MS and LA. I suspect this is follow on effects of the flooding from Katrina 3 years ago. Folks in the effected areas of Texas that flooded need to really stay on top of stuff like this. There are all kinds of unsavory things floating around in that flood water.

We had a local man die from an infection he contracted from wading in post-Katrina water. He had a scratch on his leg and it became infected.

I live just west of Houston, we have 80 mph winds last night. I can't imagine how bad it was on the Island. All the piers on Seawall have been destroyed. I spent lots of time on the island esp. when I was a teenager. 2.5 mil people our still without power from the coast to livingston. We are under a boil water order. We have been told it may be 4 weeks before all power has been restored.

I guess that what I had meant to ask is :

When Carnival sends ships to help aid with the Hurricane Relief...

do they use Carnival ships that would currently be sailing ?

And cancel the cruises that would have used those ships ?

Or do they use ships that are currently not scheduled to sail ?

Anyone know ?

How does that work ?

When Carnival used ships for Katrina...they were ships Holiday, Sensation etc that had cruises booked.

We were booked on the Holiday for October. Carnival cancelled our cruise and gave us $100.00 OBC each for our inconvenience.

For those on the Conquest and Ecstasy that may be reading these posts.

The Mayor of Galveston said on KHOU...

"They said that if residents can get to Broadway, they can leave the city on the outbound lane as that has been cleared."

25th street (and several others) runs to Broadway from the port.

My sister is in Kingwood and we haven't heard from her...how bad are things there??

If memory serves me Kingwood is at the North end of town? Our neighbor’s sister lives there also with no contact. I would suspect they have no power that is why you can not reach them. It was very windy, but surprisingly very few injuries have been reported.

you know , that is really impressive the amount of money that they must spend due to the hurricanes.

I wonder if all the cruiselines do that ...or just Carnival

Carnival is the only cruise line that has ever done so. Sadly, there were some in Congress who said that Carnival was being overpaid for doing so.

Let me first say that I am a Carnival fan and only cruise Carnival.

With that out of the way:

I wouldn't be so quick to give Carnival an the outstanding citizenship award. According to Congress Carnival was well paid (some though well overpaid) for the government use of those 3 ships. A $100.00 pp was just a drop in the bucket for what they made.

Carnival is a publicly traded co. and has shareholders to answer to so you can bet they made a ton of money off of the leasing of those ships.

Which they can do-after all they are in business to make money.

This is an old subject that has been rehashed over and over. They did not make as much money as people assumed.

A lot of people tried to go by just cruise fare which does not give a true picture.

They lost:

cruise fare

Interest on retaining the fares

OBC's to the people not able to sail

loss revenue in the casino, gift shops, shore excursions, photography, bingo

Concessions on contracts that they had to break or had to continue to pay.

Wages to employees to make up for lossed tips.

With the fallout over the last lease, I really dont see them doing that again.

Dave
