Insect bites?

:( Hi all, we are doing our first Alaskan cruise in August 2009, has anyone had problems with insect bites, or any advice on how to avoid them?

We were in Alaska in late July and early August this year. We did not have any problem with insects.

We have not had a problem on any of our Alaska cruises but if you are concerned just bring a repellent with you just in case.

We've been on Alaska cruises 3 times, and one trip included a land tour, taking us as far inland as Fairbanks...never had a problem with insects. Where did you hear or read that they might be a problem??

Thank you for answering my question, i realise insects will not bother me on the ship, when i am ashore insects tend to love me, even when i use jungle formula.:(

I have never had a problem with insects in coastal Alaska but would recommend that you consider purchasing a repellent that contains DEET. It can be purchased in small spray-on bottles or wipes and this would give you some peace of mind.

Or you can take a few sheets of Bounce, or some other dryer sheet, and simply tie one to a belt loop on your pants before you leave the ship. There's some chemical in the sheets that insects don't like. I've taken one whenever I've gone horseback riding in the wilds of Mexico and never had a problem.

We were in Alaska the first week of June (this was a few years ago) and I swear the mosquitos in Skagway were the BIGGEST I have ever seen!! Take bug spray...:)
