swom Posted October 27, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 27, 2008 If crude oil stays under 70 bucks for just 5 1/2 more months, I'll get a refund on my fuel surcharge for my upcoming cruise..... I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Have they stopped charging this surcharge for new bookings now??? Love the gas prices!!! It's about time!!! Hopefully, the airlines will go down again soon. I'm buying my tickets in Jan. and don't want to pay over 1100.00 for 2 tickets.

Actually, oil has to close under $70 for 25 consecutive trading days prior to your cruise, in order for your fuel surcharge to be refunded. Currently, the market has closed under $70 for 4 consecutive days; only 21 more to go.

MaryPoppinz Posted October 27, 2008 #6 Share Posted October 27, 2008 I believe it's 25 days prior to the 5th day before your cruise. So for cruisers leaving on Dec 1st, they would be looking at closing prices from Nov 1 - 25th or thereabouts....I think. :)

The oil price must be under $70 per barrel for 25 consecutive trading days.

The oil price must be under $70 per barrel for 25 consecutive trading days. from the press release....... For 2008 and 2009 departures, if the price of light sweet crude oil according to the NYMEX (New York Mercantile Exchange Index) is $70 per barrel or less at the 2:30 p.m. close of business as reported by Reuters on each of the 25 consecutive trading days ending five trading days prior to the guest's cruise departure date, the fuel supplement will be refunded in the form of a shipboard credit. cdncruiseluver Posted October 28, 2008 #11 Share Posted October 28, 2008 Will they really refund the surcharge? Seeing is believing!! We leave after Xmas and it does look like oil prices will stay low. Go-Bucks! Posted October 28, 2008 #12 Share Posted October 28, 2008 My "countdown" began Fri. 10/24, so I'm hoping!! An extra $70 OBC will be nice to add to my $500 already. The long term prediction is for prices to stay down for awhile. :D

In your case, you don't care what oil does until about the 12th or 13th of March, depending on how many days they lose to Easter.

Even the beloved Southwest Airlines lost money and they had most of their fuel hedged.

MaryPoppinz Posted October 28, 2008 #17 Share Posted October 28, 2008 If you want to look at historical prices, this is a pretty easy place to do that: http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/hist/rwtcd.htm Scroll all the way to the bottom for the most recent weeks. Especially good for those sailing in a month or so, since the price didn't stay below $70ish until this time last week.
ikey78 Posted October 28, 2008 #18 Share Posted October 28, 2008 Based on some rough calculations and assuming the price stays down, we will miss the refund for the 11/30 Crown sailing by about 3 days. The first day of closing price below $70 was 10/22. I used the following link to the WSJ data referenced in the Princess policy. Link may not work if you are not a WSJ online subscriber. http://online.wsj.com/mdc/public/npage/2_3051.html?mod=2_3002&sid=953619&page=commodities
