CaribbeanCrush Posted October 28, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 28, 2008 I read somewhere that Hideaway Beach might be closed for construction of the new pier. Does anyone have any information on that?
Rare nellydean Posted October 29, 2008 #2 Share Posted October 29, 2008 That would be a great pity if true, Hideaway Beach is beautiful and probably the nicest on the resort. I'm s glad we went there before this new pier, which I think will destroy the ambiance of the place
MomtoCCC Posted October 29, 2008 #3 Share Posted October 29, 2008 It was not under construction when we were there Oct 2. No sign of anything going on. Anyone been recently?
Jaxsonbrownie Posted October 29, 2008 #4 Share Posted October 29, 2008 Found this, can't find any specifics yet. It must be starting sometime soon though. Orion Marine Announces Haiti Project -- Texas Contractor, 10/6/2008 Misener Marine Construction, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Houston-based Orion Marine Group, Inc., has been awarded a $30.5-million contract to build a new cruise ship pier for a private customer in Labadee, Haiti. The project will consist of constructing a new 1,675-linear-foot dock, hydraulic dredging of a turning basin, construction of rock groins, and beach re-nourishment. The Company’s wholly owned subsidiary, Subaqueous Services, LLC, will perform the hydraulic dredging services on the project. On-site construction of the pier is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2008. “This is the first award in the Caribbean that utilizes the complete in-house, turn-key marine construction and dredging services of both our East Coast subsidiaries,” said Jim Rose, Orion Marine Group’s executive vice president, Atlantic Seaboard & Caribbean. “With the addition of Subaqueous Services earlier this year, we now have better ability to take advantage of opportunities like this, which requires a hydraulic dredge component while better controlling the project’s critical path.” [/url]
CaribbeanCrush Posted October 29, 2008 Author #5 Share Posted October 29, 2008 Thanks. I hope that they are behind schedule. We will be there in Dec. Labadee is one of my favorite ports, I hope they don't ruin it. I'm trying to keep an open mind.
gaileeh Posted October 29, 2008 #6 Share Posted October 29, 2008 Along with a new pier they also have plans to build a rather large water slide.
HorrorFan Posted October 29, 2008 #7 Share Posted October 29, 2008 So much for our stop there next March. Nothing like a nice relaxing day at the construction site.
CaribbeanCrush Posted October 29, 2008 Author #8 Share Posted October 29, 2008 This will be our 3rd stop at Labadee, I hope it isn't the last.
djandnic Posted October 29, 2008 #9 Share Posted October 29, 2008 I read somewhere that Hideaway Beach might be closed for construction of the new pier. Does anyone have any information on that? We were just there October 11 week, and it is closed. They did not say for what, but the pier may be the reason. I would have been nice if they would have put 'closed' on the sign post pointing you in the various directions, so people wouldn't have to walk all the way to this beach only to see a fence closing the beach. Taking this beach away kind of limits the beach access, IMO. The other beach on the 'calm' side is very crowed, and the beach on the other side is too rough to really use, and is very restricted in the areas that you can enter the water. Of all the privite islands I have visited for the various cruise lines, I would rate this as the worst in it's current condition. JMO.

We're always off the ship early that morning. I guess we'd better plan on the usual if we want to get a good spot.:(

I'll be at Labadee in just over a month, and I'm pretty disappointed that I can't go back to "my" spot on Hideaway Beach that I've been to twice before. I'm definitely going to miss the view of the ship - and pictures - that you could get from Hideaway. The angle and background were perfect. I'm really not sure where to go now. Barefoot and Nellie's beaches are so crowded, even when Hideaway is open. I wouldn't mind being over on the Dragon Tail beach side to watch the zipline, but are there palapas over on that side for shade, like there are at Hideaway? brooksidecustoms Posted October 29, 2008 #12 Share Posted October 29, 2008 It was not under construction when we were there Oct 2. No sign of anything going on. Anyone been recently? DH and I just got back from LOS on 10/25. We were on the island on 10/20 and there were no signs of any construction or building going on.
MA cruisers Posted October 29, 2008 #13 Share Posted October 29, 2008 That's wierd -- we were there on October 14 and there was definite construction going on. One beach was closed and another area was blocked off right behind Barefoot Beach.
Screwbit Posted October 29, 2008 #14 Share Posted October 29, 2008 We were on the cruise with brookside (hey, gang!). The beach is blocked off, though I didn't notice any work. In fact, met two engineers at the blackjack table in the casino who were debarking at Labadee, and were expecting to be there "six months, is our guess". Personal opinion is that they need a whole lot more than that pier to fix Labadee !

They don't have palapas, but there are trees. We sat under a tree and pulled our chairs in the sun when we wanted to tan. It made a big difference sitting under the trees. I don't know what the other poster saw when they were there on October 25, but when I was there the week of October 11, the beach was closed and the fencing was not a temporary type, it was an 8 foot heavy construction tyep fence. My guess it's there for a long time to come.
