Ok...I'm not trying to start another thread about what is or is not acceptable on formal nights in the dining room.

What I would like to know is, from those who have sailed on the Sapphire this fall on it's Mexican Riviera itinerary, what have the men been wearing on formal night?

Yes, I just want to "fit in". I own a tux but am trying to decide if I should buy a dark suit to bring along instead. So what are "most guys" wearing on formal night? If not too many are wearing a tux I'll buy the suit.

I don't normally wear suits and don't have a dark one, so that would have to be purchased new. Though I'd probably bring it along on my cruise in Feb too. I guess I'm worried that if I'm in a tux I'll be too formal based on all the threads about people going without jackets, ties, etc.

Maybe I'll try a poll! :)

You own a tux, wear it.

You don't have a dark suit, why purchase it?

Packing is not the problem, because your going to take something for formal night.

You can never be overdressed on formal night.

Just MHO.

Dark suite and tie is fine - there were several tux's when we were on 3 weeks ago.

However, do not attempt to get into the dining rooms on Formal Night in jeans, cutoffs, or t-shirts. We saw several people turned away because they tried to get in with slacks and t-shirt. You must have a collar on your shirt. ;)

kimmer- was it like 3 guys in a tux vs 200 in a dark suit?

Wear a tux and look like you have some class.

I don't really! :D I think the last time I got "dressed up" was on my cruise in 2006. DW and I live a more "relaxed" lifestyle.

I went to try my tux on today and found a receipt from the Triumph from Feb 2006. :)

Hi, Bob.

Mike has a tux and usually takes it on our cruises. He's having bunion surgery next month and was unable to wear his black patent "tux" shoes on our Alaskan cruise in September. The podiatrist assured him that he will be in good stead for our January cruise on the Emerald and will be able to wear his "formal" dress shoes. I hope so because the second formal night is my birthday :)

Best to "Florence Nightmare" :D

Chris

I just finished a 7-night cruise Eastern Caribbean on Caribbean Princess. Both formal nights were about 15-1 (suits over tuxes) in the dining rooms. I never felt over-dressed in my tux, mainly because all the waiters running around in their tuxes!

It makes no sense to pack both.

I saw maybe 2-3 guys with no jacket/tie on the formal nights in the dining room, so I guess they weren't being turned away (at least they weren't wearing shorts), but they must have felt uncomfortable.

It's also a pretty painless way to get some portraits done. My wife and I posed on the staircase (about 8 shots, didn't take more than 5 minutes) including one pose of each of us individually. To my surprise they looked pretty good! I bought 3 prints, took them home, scanned them into digital files, cropped them, and now we've got a nice set of formal portraits which should last us a while.

Outside of the dining room, the "formal" thing kind of disappeared . In the casino, theatre and lounges, you would see a mishmash of suits, tuxes, and jacketless attire. So once again , my James Bond casino fantasy night fell a little short.

Hi Chris, Hi Mike

Good to hear from you. I wish you well on the surgery. As far as shoes go, I don't own a pair of "formal" shoes, I just shine up the best ones I have till they look sort of patent.

Have a great time on the next cruise and have a "Happy Birthday" from both of us. We are jealous. No cruisin' for us till September. Work and school have a way of gettine in the way.

And yes, I will wear a tux whenever I get the chance. (which isn't very often)

Hey Gargoyle999, BW and I live in the Valley of the Sun. I don't get any more "relaxed" than that, but still, IMHO it feels good to get dressed up, put the beautiful one on my arm and stroll around, getting our picture taken as often as possible, and just being out of our usual lifestyle.

Whatever you decide, have a great cruise.

I love to dress on formal nights and be able to dress well on the two nights I do the specialty dining. So I have a wonderful black evening suit (not a tux) that looks formal with the correct shirt and bowtie and looks less formal but very dressy with a standard shirt and tie. I do have a tux at home but easier to pack only 1 dark suit.

Ok...you've all convinced me. I'm going to bring the tux! :)

I think you chose well! Why buy another suit when you already have something perfectly appropriate. By the way, when I sailed on the Dawn last March to the MR, there was a pretty fair percentage of tuxes being worn -- plus a noticeable number of men in military mess dress, so I wouldn't say you'll be the only one besides the waiters in full formal gear. Have a great cruise!

If you have a tux wear it. We just got off the Star Princess on same itinerary, my husband wore his tux, like he always does. We had late seating for dinner. YOu did not say which seating you have. There are definitely more in tux at the late seating.

Anytime dining! Early eaters too. Oh well, now you all have me convinced to wear it, I am just going to do it! It's only two nights and as DW likes to say about a lot of things, "you'll never see these people again". :)
