daysichase Posted November 22, 2008 #1 Share Posted November 22, 2008 I know the rate is probably insane, but what do the ATMs on the cruise/Yucatan/Cozumel charge you for withdrawing cash??
DarthGrady Posted November 22, 2008 #2 Share Posted November 22, 2008 On the ship, I think its 3%. I wouldn't use an ATM in Mexico, I have no idea what the rates would be in Cozumel/Yucatan.
BrendaB1 Posted November 22, 2008 #3 Share Posted November 22, 2008 Not sure about the fees but I do know they dispense local currency instead of US dollars.

How does an ATM charge you 3% I think the transaction fees are around $6 unless you are an Bank Atlantic customer.
DarthGrady Posted November 23, 2008 #6 Share Posted November 23, 2008 I would imagine it just adds a 3% surcharge to the withdrawl it takes from your bank account. For instance, if I ask it for $100 it gives me my cash and deducts $103 from my bank account. It makes sense from a business point of view for whatever bank owns the ATM. That way if somebody wants a thousand bucks, they make $30 as opposed to a flat rate for any transaction ammount.
gill_boo Posted November 23, 2008 #7 Share Posted November 23, 2008 Its not a percentage, I was going to use it, but ended up getting money from the slot machine method in the casino. The machine was going to charge me $6 to withdraw.
faith31617 Posted November 23, 2008 #8 Share Posted November 23, 2008 My insurance guy and his wife went on their first cruise this past spring and he used his debit card at the atm (I think it was in the casino) and when he got back into Galveston and turned on his cell phone there were messages on it from his bank alerting him that there had been over $1500 in suspicious charges on his card. NONE of them were charges he made.....fortunately his bank took care of them.

Good to know the bank was on it, but I'd travel strictly on CC and cash... That way you'll at least avoid this kind of fiasco, especially if your bank isn't as inclined to customer service. zqvol Posted November 23, 2008 #11 Share Posted November 23, 2008 There are ATMs on the ship. The fee is usually 3% of the transaction plus whatever fee that your bank charges. You will also find ATMs ashore. they are perfectly safe IF they are members of one of the well known networks that you see at home, but you need to find one that dispenses dollars and not pesos. The fees will be similar to those found on the ship.
