travel09 Posted January 15, 2009 #1 Share Posted January 15, 2009 Cruising in July to the Port of Naples, would like to know if anyone has travelled ,by local ferry ,to the Amalfi Coast, looks a wonderful way to go. Appreciate times of travel, and ease of use ,if this is possible. Thank you. Travel09.
kyriecat Posted January 15, 2009 #2 Share Posted January 15, 2009 Sorry - only been to Amalfi coast by bus and can't really recommend it due to the narrow roads which caused HUGE bottle-necks with traffic when 2 buses tried to make a hair-pin turn at the same time. However, please post your question here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=234 This is the European - Med ports of call board. People who cruise lines besides just HAL post there as well as some locals. Maybe no one here has made the ferry trip, but someone else might have. catl331 Posted January 15, 2009 #3 Share Posted January 15, 2009 We took the ship excursion (bus) to Amalfi Coast and loved it, but I don't think I would take the chance on getting back to the ship on time when using local ferries ... unless maybe if your next port is Civitivecchia, and you catch up to it there. Rare Essiesmom Posted January 15, 2009 #4 Share Posted January 15, 2009 Have you checked to see if your cruise has a roll call? If so, people there might already be planning/discussing similar excursions...EM
Jade08 Posted January 15, 2009 #5 Share Posted January 15, 2009 First, sorry for my poor English. Yes, we did it last summer. Here is the ferry timetable web site: http://www.metrodelmare.com/. Please note, on the timetable for Naples, there are two ferry docks. One is Napoli Beverello and another is Napoli Mergellina. Only first one (Beverello) is right next to cruise dock. To reach Mergellina, you need take taxi. This is very important you make sure your return journey is to Beverello. We were docked at 7:00am. Went out and asked people around. Were able to find right place to buy tickets. Our destination was town of Amalfi. The earliest ferry was 08:25am. It took about 2 hours. On the way, Vesuvius, Sorrento, Capri, Positano......the scenery was breathtaking. But, the water was very choppy, several people threw up, an old man even laid down on the floor of the back part of ship. My heart was upset a little. After reaching Amalfi, we took an open top bus winding up to the town of Ravello. Visited small town square and Villa Cimbrone. We enjoyed so so much. Then went down back to town of Amalfi. Purchased return ferry tickets (3:45pm). Toured Amalfi main streets, a lot of tourists. Here are some pictures:
