Heyyyy! Thanks for the advertisement, ha ha. What are the odds I just clicked on this thread today "just cause", too.

And yep, this is the Liverpool link although the pictures got messed up somehow:

TowncarT gave great advice and Liverpool is an adorable city to visit. The entire city is within walking distance of the ship. The architecture is fantastic! Enjoy! :D

I can highly recommend the Busybus tours of north Wales. It takes about 4 or 5 hours and visits Conwy (for the wonderful castle), amazing Snowdonia and various Welsh villages. We thoroughly enjoyed it in August 2012. You can contact them at Peter Rosenfeld <peter@busybus.co.uk>

Very capable and entertaining driver.

Towncar T- Cannot begin to thank you enough for all the great information you have provided over the past several years. I have gone through and picked the information that I will use with my husband when we visit in August, 2013 on Celebrity Infinity. I am so looking forward to our cruise and will refer others on our ship to your location.

No problem at all. It's a pleasure to help. I still have to try to plan out some walks through the city from the Pier Head for those that have asked. I will do it before the cruising season starts in earnest.

I think we may take the excursion that goes to Wales.

That will be very nice. North Wales is a beautiful place. We often take friends there.

Do not forget the relatively new 'Museum of Liverpool' which is right on the waterfront - much of the interesting stuff from the Maritime Museum has been moved to there. Take a quick walk through first to decide what your main interests are, because otherwise you will spend ages on one little bit and miss other parts you may really enjoy.

St Georges Hall have really good guided tours now as well, including the old court and cells as well as the more impressive part of the newly restored building. You can find details on the net and they are very good at answering e-mails. When my Canadian resident brother and his wife came to stay last year, they gave us a quick private tour of an area we would not have otherwisw been able to get into on that day because there as a function on. St John's Gardens which is adjacent to st Georges Hall, is an excellent picnic spot too if it is a good day - plenty of food outlets in the area to supply the food. You will have a view of the more historic Museum, Library and Walker Art Gallery from the Gardens as well.

Thanks for the update. Will add your information to the excellent information previously provided by Towncar T.

Will be docked in Liverpool Saturday, May 18. Looking forward to it! Many have said it was their favorite port on the BI cruise.

Hi T - We will be coming to Liverpool on Jun 9th, 2013 on the Infinity, staying there from 9:20am - 8:00pm.

Not so interested in Beatles histrionics. More interested in how WWII affected your city and seeing any ruins/museums type of thing. The ferry on the Mersey sounds nice. How much do they charge for that?

I only read the first few and last few pages but I guess I better read it all for ideas. I too am one of those that wondered what was there in Liverpool; and now I see some interest. Walking around is ok with this 60+ couple. Also can you direct us to some good fish 'n chips?

Also, I believe this day we are in port is Sunday. Are places open?

Hello. Welcome to Liverpool! There will be lots open on a Sunday, if that is the the day of your visit.

Because of your interest in WW2 I was going to suggest the Western Approaches museum- but unfortunately that is closed on Sundays! You might find this interesting though

http://www.liverpoolwarmuseum.co.uk/index.php

Also, there is the U-boat story on the Wirral side of the Mersey

http://www.visitliverpool.com/things-to-do/attractions/search/u-boat-story-p229341

I don't think the ferries run their normal service at the weekends, but concentrate on the tourist trips (which of course are a bit more expensive!) It looks like you can combine the ferry cost with the U-boat story.

Thanks Kate!

Those ideas are great and will probably fill up our day. Looking at those links I assume the ferry is 20 min to Woodside/Wirral and the UBoat place is right there where we get off the ferry. Take a few hours around there and the area then allow 20 min for the ferry ride back. Is the ferry terminal real close to where the ship docks at Pier Head?

The war museum seems interesting too. Where is it in relation to the pier Head dock?

Still open to other ideas, but have to leave a little time for shopping, of course!

We were in Liverpool last year for a day - like you. We took a wonderful bus tour of north Wales. We can highly recommend it. Check busybus.co.uk and look for "North Wales Adventure". They get you at the boat and bring you back. There is a wonderful fish and chip restaurant at one of the stops.

Hi Susan, sorry for the late reply, but only just saw your post. I heartily concur with what Kate has said, and it is spot on.

In addition, I think you might want to make a trip to St Luke's Church at the top of Bold Street. We locals refer to it as the "Bombed-out Church," as it has been left in the state that it was at the end of the blitz. Nowadays, it is more of a shrine to the reconciliation between former enemies rather than a simple reminder of the bad things that went on in the past. Germans are as welcome as anybody to visit and will be warmly greeted.

The Maritime Museum, which is adjacent to the Albert Dock has a good display of wartime information and artefacts, as well as a great exhibit charting Liverpool's contribution to populating the 'new world.'

The relatively new Museum of Liverpool, which is on the Pier Head itself (and like all our museums is free to enter) also has some great exhibits on wartime Liverpool.

One of my favourite things is to print out pictures of bomb-damaged Liverpool and then to stand on the place from where they were taken and try to imagine what it must have been like.

The suggestion from wopcan about North Wales is certainly a good one, as North Wales is beautiful, but it isn't Liverpool and you'll learn very little about Liverpool during the war on such a trip. But if stunning scenery is what you are looking for then North Wales is the place!

One last thing to look out for on the Pier Head itself would be the plaque in the wall commemorating the cooperation between the allies and in particular between the USA and the people of Liverpool, as it recognises the efforts that were made in bringing ashore so many men from the USA at Liverpool. It is on the Pier Head side of the stone wall that you see on your right hand side as you disembark the ship. Worth a photo at least.

I will try to think of some more stuff for you. Liverpool is full of hidden gems!

Unfortunately the war museum is closed on Sunday and Friday. If you are here on a different day, it's just behind the town hall which is in Castle Street, about 5-10 minutes walk from the cruise terminal. It's not a big place but very interesting.

Not sure how long you'd need for the u-boat story, as I'm sorry to say I haven't been- despite living approx 3 miles away! The ferry appears to take a little longer going back to Liverpool- half an hour! The museum of Liverpool (next to the Pier Head, and free admission) has a very nice gift shop. Also shops in the Albert Dock, (specialist/ souvenier), and across the main road in Liverpool One (a lot of high-street chains)

I think the "return" to Liverpool being half an hour is juat when the ferry is doing the scenic "River Explorer" route, which I recommend. I have taken several friends from the USA (and will be taking more in May) on this cruise and it has always been enjoyed by us all. Here is a link to the site with information on the Winter schedule. The summer timetable/route is not shown yet but keep an eye on the site, as I guess it will change around the end of March.:)

Here is an appeal from me to all the locals (and anyone else) who can help me with information to put together a "Beatles Route" on this thread for people that want to explore the history of the Fab Four on foot from their cruise ship. Specifically, I am looking for any 'hidden gems' that perhaps not everyone knows about, but they must be accessible on foot within no more than a half mile or so from the Pier Head.

I am ashamed to confess that I am not a big Beatles fan (in the sense that I do love the music but have never visited the sites or museums).

I am not talking about the outlying sites, like the houses, but just ones in the city centre. These are the ones I already know:

The Cavern and Matthew Street area

Hard Days Night Hotel

Eleanor Rigby statue in Stanley Street

Beatles Museum at Albert Dock

The Beatles story on the Pier Head

The Beatles exhibit and show at the Museum of Liverpool

I am sure that the Beatles experts on this site will know more great places and I would be grateful if people could post the details of what they are and where they are on this thread. I will then endeavour to map out a trail for people to follow when they visit, as several people have enquired about this.

Of course, if such a thing already exists elsewhere, I would be grateful for a link so that I don't re-invent the wheel! Thanks:):)

Seems like most of the post are from 2009 we will be in Liverpool Aug 20, 2013, Caribbean Princess. Any updates to your wonderful thread on Liverpool?

Thanks.

I went down to see the Crown Princess today. Here's a photo I took from the other side of the Mersey. All the people that I met from the ship said how impressed they'd been with Liverpool. That was nice to hear.:):)
