ADD Boy Posted February 11, 2009 #1 Share Posted February 11, 2009 Ok, I'm looking for some good suggestions for requests for the Piano Player! The Piano Bar is DWs favorite venue on the ship, and I want to have some fun requests queued up for her! I know this is terribly subjective, but I think it would be fun to see what people's faves are, and maybe which performers are particularly good at performing certain songs. I am partial to anything by Van Morrison, particularly Brown Eyed Girl.

falkcor Posted February 11, 2009 #5 Share Posted February 11, 2009 I'm with you on Brown Eyed Girl - and everybody knows that one! Some of the favorites (that almost everybody knows or picks up easily): Rocketman, Candle in the Wind, Hotel California, Brown Eyed Girl, Layla, Sweet Caroline, Leaving on a Jet Plane (last night), and Piano Man (of course)

Cotton Posted February 12, 2009 #7 Share Posted February 12, 2009 'Dock of the Bay'. The guy in the piano bar last week sang it three times for me. (He had two sheets of paper with the songs he plays and sings.)

skewsus Posted February 12, 2009 #9 Share Posted February 12, 2009 Don't go to it to just hear Billy Joel, Eagles and Neil Diamond type songs. Although those are nice to listen to, I like joining in the songs that the paino man changes all of the lyrics as he goes along. Songs like Margaritaville, Shout and Gilligan's Island type songs. And don't forget "You never close your thighs anymore when I kiss your hips. I have only been on one cruise with a piano bar but am looking forward to my next one in May. It took the cruise lines a long time to get them added but it was worth the wait!
sixgun8 Posted February 12, 2009 #10 Share Posted February 12, 2009 Piano Man is a great one... ASk the piano player to Play Billy Joel's Piano Man......I'm sure they have never heard of it before.............. When we were on the conquest with "Don" on the piano, he was answering some peoples questions on a prettyslow night. He said that Piano Man was probably the song he hated the most because everyone wanted to hear it. Along with few others I saw named on this thread. Of course, We weren't really impressed with "Don" as every note he sang was as monotone as the one before and he seemed maybe a little bitter that he was there at all??? Just our opinion. DJ Eddy Posted February 12, 2009 #11 Share Posted February 12, 2009 Anything but "Piano Man" it's been done and done... I always ask the piano player for some of their original material, it's usually very good.

It took the cruise lines a long time to get them added but it was worth the wait! Now THAT'S what I'm talking about!! I like the Ray Charles, Kingfish. What soul! I almost added a rule on my OP, "Billy Joel Piano Man not eligible!" I used to walk by the piano bars until my Pride cruise, when I discovered what a BLAST it can be! How many of the piano performers have their own original material? If they do, I'm sure they are absolutely thrilled if you request it.

DarthGrady Posted February 12, 2009 #18 Share Posted February 12, 2009 "Dont Stop Believing" by Journey,,,,,in the words of one Billy Dee Williams, it works every time. People literally come running in from other parts of the ship just to sing along.
falkcor Posted February 12, 2009 #19 Share Posted February 12, 2009 where are the adventurous piano bar people? BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY? actually, i did request bohemian rhapsody from martin kaye on destiny this fall... and he indulged us for about 30 seconds, and then stopped. he apologized, and said he refused to play further (in a very humourous, and entertaining manner, mind you) because it made him sound like a woman. :D we did coax him into another queen song, we are the champions... and after tipping him 30.00 to play piano man AGAIN one night, i also made him promise to learn the lyrics to creep by radiohead... which was great played on the piano... he didn't know some of the more 'adventurous' requests. i blame his being from england, in part ;) and part of the fun is having the rest of the bar sing along... realistically, everybody in the room won't always know some of the more 'adventurous' songs... Au48 Posted February 12, 2009 #20 Share Posted February 12, 2009 Lots of favorites in the piano bar, but my favorite experience in a shipboard piano bar actually occurred this summer in Alaska on Holland America's Oosterdam. There was a relatively young crowd every night in the piano bar in that ship, and he started playing college fight songs. I mean, the guy knew EVERY fight song from D1 schools that you could thing of. He played Auburn, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Michigan, Washington, USC, Florida, Alabama, Texas, etc -- whatever anyone requested. He used to play in Birmingham, AL and basically had to learn all the SEC fight songs, so he said he just learned as many as he could while he was at it. People started tipping more and more to have their fight song played, so during the rest of the week, he'd set aside about a half hour for fight songs... and he'd play the fight song of the highest tipper... non-stop until someone else one-upped that person's tip! It was a blast, and I'm sure he made a LOT more tips than usual that night. I just remember some guy from Wisconsin tipped him $30, and we heard "On Wisconsin..." for a good 5 minutes until it became apparent that $30 was the ceiling for that night. Just a different, but fun piano bar experience to share...
mcsd63 Posted February 12, 2009 #21 Share Posted February 12, 2009 Anyone been on the Holiday recently that can comment on the piano player? I was on the Holiday in 2007 and we were looking forward to the piano bar. The guy that was on the Holiday then was good but was a bit more laid back then we are used to. Oh and btw the player that was on the Fantasy back in 2006 was a blast. He played several rap songs which made it very interesting and funny. Nice. Our player on the Inspiration did Bohemian Rhapsody for us. It was awesome. Of course everyone acted out the Waynes World scene, and by everyone I mean me and one other guy. ALLMYKIDS3 Posted February 12, 2009 #24 Share Posted February 12, 2009 oyyyy....not PIANO MAN or SWEET CAROLINE...lol where are the adventurous piano bar people? BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY? We were on the Triumph in 2007 and my then-10-year-old son requested any song by Queen, and you asked him to name 2 songs by Queen that he knew. The first song he said was Bohemian Rhapsody. Does " Chug " ring a bell?:D lol. By the way, Congrats on Don't Forget the Lyrics. Now we know why you won't be on the Glory in April.
Julz226 Posted February 12, 2009 #25 Share Posted February 12, 2009 PROUD MARY and KING OF THE ROAD were the two "theme songs" on our last cruise. I heard them everywhere I went (including the piano bar) and everyone loved to sing along. Buffett is also a great choice but give Margaritaville a rest... He did HUNDREDS of great songs besides Margaritaville.
