OK G'MA...you made your point. You are now "kicking a dead horse" which of course if left unattended and unburied (or brought into an American port) could potentially endanger the lives of the entire US population. Bury the horse G'MA.....and, more importantly, stop being a smug bully!! Leave her alone!

? I don't always agree with G'MA, okay, rarely, but that las post was spot on. This isn't about "FEELINGS". It's about the rules and they are obvious.

Does anyone remember learning "Ignorance of the law is no excuse"?

I agree BND but G'ma has already made the point several times......and the OP has already apologized!! G'ma needs to stop bullying on these boards....it's not the first time this has happened!!

Don't flame me for asking... just enlighten me because I really don't know.

How does taking a BLT sandwich off a cruise ship and eating it during an excursion violate laws and put a country at risk?

I am NOT being sarcastic... I really am intersted in the answer.

I doesn't matter why. It's the law.

It basically becomes an issue of where do you draw the line. They just say no food that isnt pre packaged.

Doing it any other way is just to confusing for all concerned...creating lists of accepted non packaged foods...etc

LETTUCE,TOMATOES. Parasites, viruses, etc that might be native to the US, but not to a foreign country. Why do some question every rule every time? That's my question? If someone is a botanist or a specialist in the field, then fine, question it, but there are plenty of arm chair quarterbacks on here who have no clue, but live to buck the law. And, it is laws, not suggestions.

There have been many insects, parasites and blights passed on by moving produce between countries/climates. Ever heard of the Potato blight in Ireland?

We never knew anything was wrong with what we did. No one said a thing and we did not take any fruit off the ship. If we were trying to hide our sandwiches we would have been smuggling.... I suppose

I am not a malicious or hateful person because of it. Maybe clueless...probably clueless..

There are very obvious signs posted at the exit before you swipe your sign & sail cards. So you missed them, we have all missed a sign or two (or three) in our life.

Thank You! I appreciate you being gracious, I think we all come to these boards to learn, share and have the best cruise possible. It really stinks when someone rakes you over the coals and makes you feel stupid or even worse, accuses you of being intentionally harmful. :)

Here's how, happens ALL the time.

That BLT you stole from the cruise ship has a worm in the tomato. Instead of eating that worm like the cook that made the sandwich intended for you to do, you toss it to the side. The worm crawls from the tomato and starts to eat the nearest island vegetation it can find.

The worm being fat and healthy, then multiplies. Don't ask how one worm can multiply, it just does. Two years later as there are no worm eating birds on this island the worm and all of it's offspring have eaten every piece of vegetation on the island.

With no pretty flowers or palm trees on the island only RCL is willing to take passengers there. Riots break out and soon not even RCL goes there.

Now, if instead of tossing the sandwich had you poured a gallon of DDT or Malathion on the worm you would have killed it. Or created a new string of Malathion and DDT resistant worm.

How do I know this? I havd a B.S. in Agricultural Management from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Go Mustangs.

What an enlightened conversation! Obviously all are concerned about doing the right thing at all possible times. The rules and laws are posted for all to see and know.

I just pray that there are none here that are allowing their 18 month old to relieve themselves all day in the pools and, god forbid, the adults only ?, hot tubs. Any chair holders here? Buffet line crashers?

Methinks none are without transgressions, with or without prior knowledge. Those stones can hurt!;)

While I do none of the above... sterile urine (diapered babies? that's a different story and security should be alerted :p), or chair hogs, really don't compare to the agricultural devastation, loss of jobs and income, etc. And it affects the entire country... and that's not an exaggeration... it has happened here, in CA because of ONE person bringing in fruit, and it affected all of us. It doesn't take much to cause major problems, and it is definitely a big deal...

I'm amazed there are travelors that are still unaware of this food issue. And then try to hide behind the ignorance label.

And others not knowing how natural defense ecosystems work.

With travel comes responsibility. Use it. Earn it. Learn it.

Amen.

I'd like to expand on that and say that with LIFE comes responsibility. There are those who don't understand this for some reason.

And I suppose that you guys think that we can control global warming/cooling as well.....so smug!!

Maybe a mom traveling with kids, who may have never been outside the US BTW, may be thinking more about how to keep kids happy with lunch...and not about how her loving maternal actions might destroy an island. Give the OP a break...maybe you should start your own thread on proper environmentalism and get off this one!!!

As they say...."Ding dong this thread is dead"!!!

Being you're defending her, how much research do you suppose she did to protect her children from local diseases, if any? I hope more than worrying about how happy they were.

This thread is alive and well, if nothing more than to educate the uneducated.

You are probably right MrPete....she probably did no research whatsoever regarding environmental or human safeguards. However, after the OP reads everything on this thread, her awareness will be forever altered. I am not saying that being aware and educated is bad...I am simply saying that it's not necessary to slam her character in the process!

You are right halos....I only like pee in my Cap'n Crunch:D

BTW, is peeing outside a threat to the environment in Jamaica? I'm curious because I'll be going there in April and I just want to be educated about possible legal and/or environmental ramifications.

It is a shame to read some of these threads and see folks that obviously are responding just to slam others and then there are other folks that offer up their own SAGE WISDOM and seem to be in the throes of real rightous indignation. WHAT A HOOT! LOL! :D

This is the scoop....previously on threads like this, there were posters who disregarded the rules of not bringing food off the ship. Their ignorance (and that is exactly what it was) kinda leaves you a bit bitter. By ignorant I mean this, they were aware of the rules and broke them anyway.

why?

Because instead of being educated or trying to become a little educated, they take the stance that the cruise line is 'out to get them' by not allowing food off the ships.

Basically, they are too cheap to buy food in port. Most of these people scream about having a large family, "and why should we buy food in port if we paid for it on the ship!" (because God forbid the kids go a couple hours without somethign to eat)

If you did a search to find all the numerous threads about this subject over the years, you likely won't find any because I'd wager they've all been removed. But believe me, some people just don't get it.

Ok, now I am sure there are some who take food off the ship and honestly don't understand the ramifications...BUT they do announce it over the PA, they have signs as you leave the ship and it is posted every day in the Capers. I think most people who disregard the rule do see that this is a rule but just blow it off because they don't see it as a big deal.

Sometimes rules do seem silly, but people have to understand, they THEY don't always understand everything and that rules are usually in place for a good reason, not just to piss people off.

I hope this helps explain why people are indignant on some (or many) of these threads.

and fwiw, I believe all packaged foods are allowed off the ships.

I've been reading about some cruise lines that will pack you a box lunch when you leave the ship. Does Carnival do this? That would be sweet to take to the beach.:)

I've never heard of this happening. I tend to eat a big breakfast before leaving the ship. Some of the ports have all inclusive resorts for a good price, that would allow you to try some of the local food, and of course, all you can drink.;) At the cruiseline operated ports, your food is provided for you.
