LadyShiva Posted February 27, 2009 #1 Share Posted February 27, 2009 I'm wondering at the percentage of smokers on this board. There's a heated thread going on, but I'm just wondering if this board reflects the 20% statistic most articles toss around. Thanks in advance for your response. uppitycats Posted February 27, 2009 #2 Share Posted February 27, 2009 I have never smoked anywhere, cruise or otherwise. Are you wanting to know if smokers choose to smoke/not smoke, or just anyone??

jondirk Posted February 27, 2009 #4 Share Posted February 27, 2009 I read through that other post as well and was getting a annoyed at the blatant name calling. It quickly degraded from an adult conversation to a flame war. I'm a "retired smoker" who used to smoke a pack a day and quit for health, financial, social reasons. Therefore, I'm a VERY tolerant non-smoker. Yes, I smelled it while passing through the casino and might have caught a brief whiff walking past someone on deck but it was always the case of "just passing through" so it didn't bother me. I know it's hard to quit and I'm understanding of those that can't break the habit. Besides there are more places I can go for fresh air than there are for a smoker to go and light up. ruskatab Posted February 27, 2009 #5 Share Posted February 27, 2009 I do smoke on the balcony and in the Casino. I do not smoke in the cabin. We normally get the corner aft and I am very considerate of the balconys next to us. I will gladly put out a cigarette if asked nicely. That normally doesnt happen though. I have quit about 4 times but start back up. I rarely drink alcohol so smoking is my outlet. Im not proud of it and hopefully one day will be able to kick the habit for good. I see your post as very reassuring--both to myself as a non-smoker, and to those who believe they "have" to book interior staterooms due to balcony smoking. I realize I'm just polling the people on this board for the next few days, but I am truly interested in the numbers of smokers to non-smokers. I can't predict the crowd on my next cruise, I realize, so I'm taking these numbers with a boulder of salt.

Arwenmark Posted February 27, 2009 #9 Share Posted February 27, 2009 Never smoked, never will, grew up with it in the house, been burned by them when I was a child and since, while in my WC. Obviously if you want your poll to reflect accurately at all you need the non smokers posting they don't smoke on a cruise, otherwise all your replies are from smokers who do to some degree and it looks like the majority smoke. Otherwise I would not post in this thread. I hope they close this one along with closing the other one, or this one will look just like the other one. Sorry but that is true. mpk218 Posted February 27, 2009 #10 Share Posted February 27, 2009 I hate to eschew the numbers but the only time I do have an ocasional cig is when we are on vacation , which more often than not happens to be on a cruise . Is there a slot for that ? ;)

Dukegirl5577 Posted February 27, 2009 #13 Share Posted February 27, 2009 Non-smoker -- never tried -- never will:D Same here. And I'm a very NON-tolerant non-smoker. Just the slightest smell of it makes me sick and I start coughing. It's very difficult to breathe. :(
LadyShiva Posted February 27, 2009 Author #14 Share Posted February 27, 2009 What kind of pipe? ;) LOL! I know! When I typed that I was wondering if I should qualify it more! Theoretically, it would still be "smoking," right? *grin*

Wineshipper Posted February 27, 2009 #17 Share Posted February 27, 2009 OK, first let me qualify the following by stating first that it is posted and intended as HUMOR only. I gave up drugs, alcohol and sex when I got married....please leave me one vice. Will enjoy a cigar on occasion and the DW likes the aroma of a good cigar. We have a corner aft cabin, so will sit on the balcony and try not to offend others.

LadyShiva Posted February 27, 2009 Author #20 Share Posted February 27, 2009 Over 216 views versus 47 votes at this moment. No way of knowing the answer, but I wonder if others are refreshing the thread to see the new votes as many times as I have! *laughing* Beyond the humor of the posts, this is a neat set of results to me. I'm dying to know what the "other" responses mean... But I think they are something to do with the colorful glassware you can get in Jamaica! LOL! cruzeluver Posted February 27, 2009 #21 Share Posted February 27, 2009 I too like to think of myself as a considerate smoker. I only smoke in designated areas and will put one out if politely asked. Unfortunately, like another poster stated, very often the person doing the asking is hardly polite about it. True story: Sailed three years ago on the NCL Majesty with three other smokers. We were in a designated, outdoor smoking area. A "gentleman" (and I use the term VERY loosely) walked by, saw us, and said in a very loud voice: "Oh my God! Smokers! How disgusting!" followed by several fake coughs to make his point. Normally I'm fairly tolerant, but the devil voice in my head took over and I replied "Oh my God! Fat person! How disgusting!" followed by several grunts. I know, not very mature of me, but for crying out loud.

Good for you for not standing silently by and ignoring the sanctimonious rudeness. It may not have been very mature but maybe next time, he think before he opens his mouth. :) CG
