CruisnGram Posted February 27, 2009 #26 Share Posted February 27, 2009 OMG..another smoking/non-smoking thread? Yup. LOL What amazes me is the poll results so far. Almost 50/50? I would never have believed that. I'm thinking we have some "closet smokers" that only smoke when on a cruise ship! :D CG
LadyShiva Posted February 27, 2009 Author #27 Share Posted February 27, 2009 Did everybody get a chance to vote? If so, it looks like this board has more smokers than non-smokers posting. Kinda interesting! Thanks for participating!
sha88 Posted February 27, 2009 #28 Share Posted February 27, 2009 I voted yes because I have smoked on every cruise I have been on, but I quit July 5, 2008 once again, so I am hoping for a smoke free cruise next week.

I hope you make it through the cruise smoke free. Congrats on quitting. I think that is probably the hardest thing anyone can do is to quit smoking. I will say I am surprised at the results so far too, however I don't know if it means anything at all. You have such a small precentage of people who cruise who actually will see the survey, and I really don't think 50% of the people on CC smoke, so just not sure what it will turn out to mean. That makes sense. I hope you have a lovely cruise next week! I'm very envious! :)

Right, that's why I mentioned the boulder of salt. :) 101 people have voted so far, and so far the odds are higher than "normal" in society that the CC poster is a smoker, if we believe the articles cited that state only 20% of society smokes. sha88 Posted February 27, 2009 #32 Share Posted February 27, 2009 Thanks, Terry and Lady: My challenge now is to find some shorts tomorrow to buy (in PA, they usually don't have those out till April) since I have gained about 12 pounds since I quit, but I feel ALOT better - no more coughng! Happy cruising, all! Can't wait to board the Gem. So many great comments about that ship on these boards.

erkevin Posted February 28, 2009 #34 Share Posted February 28, 2009 I don't think you will get valid results from the survey. Many non-smokers would just skip past the thread believing that is does not interest/pertain to them. Smokers would be curious, i believe. With that said, I enjoy a cigar occasionally onboard. I have never had one on deck. Only in the cigar lounge or when I am on the balcony, but can detect no one on their balcony near me. Not fool proof, but I try. I do not believe that I have a right to smoke my cigars. It is a privilege and like all privileges, it comes with certain responsibilities. melthemadhatter Posted February 28, 2009 #35 Share Posted February 28, 2009 I read through that other post as well and was getting a annoyed at the blatant name calling. It quickly degraded from an adult conversation to a flame war. I'm a "retired smoker" who used to smoke a pack a day and quit for health, financial, social reasons. Therefore, I'm a VERY tolerant non-smoker. Yes, I smelled it while passing through the casino and might have caught a brief whiff walking past someone on deck but it was always the case of "just passing through" so it didn't bother me. I know it's hard to quit and I'm understanding of those that can't break the habit. Besides there are more places I can go for fresh air than there are for a smoker to go and light up. Touche! That is the best thing I have read here about this subject. I too am a "retired" smoker, so I understand as well.
CanadianTwosome Posted February 28, 2009 #36 Share Posted February 28, 2009 I'm a 'sometimes' because I only smoke when I'm socializing - and by 'socializing' I mean having a few drinks. I smoked regularly for 13 years and quit in 1993. Now I indulge myself once I've numbed my taste buds a bit... no way I can do it sober because it's GROSS!!! Fortunately for me, I can have a couple and then not smoke again for a couple of months until I go out again. I just LOVE all the physical sensations of smoking. Even when I smoked regularly I was considerate and always asked if people around me minded if I smoked - and meant it. I haven't seen the 'other' thread yet, but I've seen many like it. There's far too much intolerance on both sides, in my opinion. Smoking areas work. People just need to respect them - smokers need to stick to them, and non-smokers need to accept them. :)
flashdog_1 Posted February 28, 2009 #37 Share Posted February 28, 2009 In designated areas, not in the cabin. You meet interesting people (not the ones who make snide remarks).

I'm thinking we have some "closet smokers" that only smoke when on a cruise ship! :D CG Having booked several inside cabins, I can testify that "closet" is the correct term ;) BTW-I'm also one of those 'retired' smokers. I quit 21 yrs ago when the wife was expecting, the timing just seemed right :D
retiredonthesea Posted February 28, 2009 #39 Share Posted February 28, 2009 I wonder if the "cigar bars" have anything to do with the occasional smoker on a cruise. My DBIL who doesn't smoke except on a cruise or resort vacation will always go to the cigar bar on a cruise and have a couple or so during the week.??? Maybe it's the socializing. Rare ohioNCLcruiser Posted February 28, 2009 #45 Share Posted February 28, 2009 I haven't read this entire post but a few of the major cruise lines did a survey and found out there is a higher % of smokers on cruise ships then the % on land. And those who don't like the smell of smoke wafting onto their balcony, may reconsider when they realize what the alternative could be. CG (still laughing....I loved that posting!) LaShelle2 Posted February 28, 2009 #47 Share Posted February 28, 2009 The problem is 1 smoker can ruin the environment for 100 people around them! Even if it is only 20% smoking, there are 80% of us in misery. Smoking should be banned from Earth! :D

James..are you in HI now??? I said on another smoking thread (I think it must have gotten deleted or something cause I can't find it) that X is probably having a lot of success right now by being the most stringent no smoking policy in the industy. Probably because they are getting a lot of the nons smoking customers that literally hate smoking. However I bet if all major cruiselines adopted the same policies that X has, there would be a huge drop in all of their revenue, even X's because they would no longer be the "only player in town" so to speak. And I know if that happened the cruise industry would lose our business. There is no way I'm going on a cruise for 7 days or more and not be able to smoke on my own balcony. I am sure there are many smokers who would feel the same way.

I posted some pictures today on my newest blog entry (http://www.shipblogger.com). I think because the higher % of smokers that cruise is why more cruise lines haven't made more smoke free changes yet..yet being the keyword. I really think that Carnival Paradise smoke free ship would have continued to be as successful as much as it was if Carnival changed up its itins from time to time. One interesting note. In Ohio when the non smoking in restaurants and bars rule started the owners were worried over the drop in customers. They were surprised to see their customer count actually rising. It's going to be interesting to see what the cruise industry will do.
SallyUK Posted February 28, 2009 #50 Share Posted February 28, 2009 I'm a non-smoker with asthma and would consider myself to be tolerant of smokers. As long as there are designated areas it's something of a non-issue providing both sides keep up their end of the bargain: the non-smokers don't complain when the smokers are in their 'rightful place' (sorry couldn't resist saying that) and the smokers don't smoke where they shouldn't and are considerate of those around them. The only time I have had a problem was when I had a balcony and the elderly woman next to me was a chain-smoker. It virtually rendered the balcony unusable for almost the whole cruise. As she was so immobile in the end I decided that I was happy to go up on deck to take in the fresh air as it was easier for me than for her, but in general that's one area where there's room for give and take.
