Memphis, I'm thinking that he meant from the port in St. Maarten! He was giving me shopping tips and ease of getting to shopping areas and was referencing getting off of the ship in St. Maarten and using the water taxi. Sorry for the confusion, we have mixed up the thread a bit!

Aplmac, I also look at every thread you start knowing the pics inside will be amazing! Seeing these pics of Antigua and Barbados is making me even more excited :D I can't wait.

Doug that view from Shirley Heights is absolutely beautiful :)

Don't get me wrong I love reading the different threads, but no words can describe how beautiful these places are. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Earlier in this thread you mention taking a water taxi from Antigua to St. Maarten ===> Whaaaa..?!

Where do we catch the water taxi and how long does it take? ===> 5 minutes?

Methinks you somehow got your comprehension wires quite crossed?! :D

I mentioned the water taxi at SXM

transporting people no further than from the pier at St.Maarten

-to the downtown shopping area at St.Maarten, a distance of maybe 1/4 mile..

certainly not from island to island(40-50 miles?)

-that would be a ferry, not a water taxi!

Enter the water taxi facility here..at SXM = St.Maarten(airline destination code)

SXM-830.jpg

..and walk down this ramp..at SXM

WTaxi-834.jpg

It'll take you across Great Bay to the shopping area of Philipsburg(Dutch side,SXM) - NOT to Antigua! ;)

Kim, found this recently. I think it is still valid. Prices at Tony's Watersports on Dickenson Beach:

$45 jet ski, 30 mins, single or double

$50 parasailing

$20 kayak, 1 hour, single or double

$30 waterski, kneeboard, wakeboard, 1 session

$40 Sunfish/Hobie Cat, 1 hour

Don't let your daughter get too worked up. Antigua is not a great shopping destination.

I agree..it's not exciting (St.Maarten is much better more varied)

but all is not lost at Antigua.

Wife and I wandered around the boardwalk along the waterfront

Costa Atlantica's huge bow points the way -over by the white catamaran..

and went into a few small touristy shops there

to find a reasonable array of ladies clothing for the tropics.

I took these shots because of the ornate carved tops on the clothing racks!

-not because I'm into ladies clothing, no!

We came home with -of all things!- a nice mattress pad for our bed

and a pair of gorgeous-quality bath towels the wife spotted

in THE LINEN SHOP at Heritage Quay, St.Johns.

I bought a little lens-cleaner blowbrush kit with cleaning fluid for $7 somewhere else

so it's not a total loss.

Thank you Doug! I emailed the, but they never emailed back. I figured we'll just kind of "wing" this one and figure it out when we get there. It's one of those that if we can get it tor work, great, if not, then that's OK. Both kids (well... my husband too!) are excited about the jet ski! I'm going to sit on the beach and take pictures. :)

What awesome photos!! Thanks so much for sharing. We will be doing the Southern cruise in Aug.

aplmac:how do you get your skies/water so blue?? Do you use Photoshop on those areas or is it really that blue? I was wondering if you used any type of filters with your photos. I use a Canon Rebel XT and I have a Sigma 10-20, 70-200, 50mm, 100mm/macro, 85mm and the kit lens. I am thinking of replacing my kit lens with something else. I havn't decided yet.

Do you use Photoshop on those areas or is it really that blue? ===> Really that blue

I was wondering if you used any type of filters with your photos. ===> UV/protection filter only

I use a Canon Rebel XT and I have a Sigma 10-20, 70-200, 50mm, 100mm/macro, 85mm and the kit lens.

If you have the Sigma 10-20

then you should know that it tends to exaggerate blues and turquoises slightly(at least mine does)

The colors in these islands are strong, particularly in direct sunlight

...no real need to use Photoshop to enhance.

It's called tropical conditions.

As I've said before, sometimes I reduce color saturation!

Stuck my head in this St.Johns shop -and couldn't believe my eyes.

Wind chimes and mobiles by the hundred!

Anyone know anything about this sailing boat?

Every time I pass through Antigua

it seems to be permanently parked in the same spot...

Does Black Swan do coastal cruises??

I had heard that it was the ship used for Pirates of the Caribbean, but then I saw similar looking ships on other islands. So I wonder, was this the ship or just one of many replicas?

Grrr, second try's the charm with this board I hope.

Our day was spent cruising around Antigua in a power boat on a tour called the Xtreme Circumnav, with Adventure Antigua. They picked us up on the docks where many others have posted pics.

IMG_1040.jpg

Along the way we saw many cliffs, expensive seaside homes and natural wonders...

IMG_1047.jpg

We stopped at Stingray City... which we had all to ourselves. The fine gentlemen there explained how to interact with these gentle animals, and we all earned a new dance called the "stingray shuffle". :D

IMG_1063.jpg

One of the inhabitants of this area. Don't worry, they're very gentle, curious and intelligent creatures. Probably like you, there were a few skittish people in our party but they were all very glad they'd gone in afterwards. Don't miss it!

IMG_1053-1.jpg

There are other inhabitants of Stingray City to see and photograph as well.

IMG_1072.jpg

We stopped and had lunch at a secluded beach, where we swam, basked, explored, and variously enjoyed ourselves.

We also saw and heard some history, stopped for a snorkel near some interesting rock formations.

IMG_1130.jpg

After that we stopped at another secluded beach that can't be reached by road... had the place almost all to ourselves. The rum punch was doled out and a good time had by all.

Hope you enjoyed some more "natural" views of Antigua!

Bearing in mind this is a cruise website, here are pics of two ships leaving St. John's last Thursday - 14th May 2009. The first two are Caribbean Princess and the next three are Adventure of the Seas. The sun was going down and light fading fast. Pics taken from Fort James. In the second one, just to the right of Princess you can see the US Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort which was visiting for 11 days.
