  • 3 years later...

my mom and i will be in copenhagen next month and a friend of mine told me about an amazing kebab place that is about 3.5 miles from where we dock at langelinie

this is the address..... Pasha Kebab, Enghavevej 57, 1674 København

we were thinking of biking but have read such mixed reviews and are a little nervous about it. i am 45 and my mom is 75 but in excellent shape and bikes regularly. anyway, after seeing this thread we are considering walking back but it is pretty far. any suggestions? we could also take a bus part of the way but i dont know much about doing that.

Yes, stunning pictures and pertinent tips as usual, thanks a ton Terry! We will be on the Silhouette overnighting in Copenhagen June 6 & 7, on Day 1 we are driving up to northern Zealand and Elsinore with a canal cruise scheduled for the evening, followed by the Tivoli gardens later in the evening. Day 2 we plan to take the free 11am walking tour, this walk back to the ship will be perfect for that afternoon. Of course I need to find out where our ship will be docking, but we'll do this walk anyway. Thanks again Terry, you're the best:)

Appreciate these many nice follow-ups and comments!! Especially love the many excellent postings and sharing from Danish viking. Very helpful and great sharing. Had kind of lost track of this thread going back many years. From all feed-back and reading, Copenhagen is still so wonderful and charming. Will try to post more details and visuals later. Happy so many have dropped by this thread, made posts, etc. Keep asking good questions and contributing beneficial information.

From the New York Times Travel Section in late April 2018, they had this headline: 36 Hours in Copenhagen with this sub-headline: "In the design-savvy, food-obsessed Danish capital, the only problem for travelers is keeping up with all that is new."

Among the story highlights are: What a difference a decade can make. Copenhagen today is a city transformed, a polestar across creative fields from art to architecture, design to dining. No longer a sleepy Scandinavian capital, this good-looking city found success by tinkering with expectations. Cyclists own the avenues even in the depths of winter. The near-barren land gave birth to a culinary movement. The only problem for travelers visiting today, faced with new and noteworthy openings nearly every week, is keeping up.

Lots of interesting ideas, options, etc., are contained in this profile of Copenhagen. Many food, dining, drinking, art, design, etc., potentials are mentioned, plus pictures, a good/interactive map, etc.

From the Wall Street Journal Jan. 18, 2018, they had this headline: "An Insider’s Guide to Copenhagen" with this sub-headline: "The best places to eat, shop, stay and embrace winter in Copenhagen, with expert advice from Noma’s René Redzepi, co-founder of Hay design company, Mette Hay, and others."

Here are some of their profile highlights: "Denmark's capital is an easy sell in the summer. Locals swim in urban harbors like Islands Brygge or Fisketorvet, or picnic near the boundless flower beds in the Renaissance-era King’s Garden. But as winter insinuates its way into the city, Copenhagen shows its true strength: embracing the cold in elegant Nordic style. In the darker months, candles wedged into wine bottles gleam in restaurant windows, the candy colors of the canal-side buildings pop against the muted skies and a twinkly-lit skating rink draws visitors to the edge of the Frederiksberg Gardens. Residents still ride their bicycles. As for foodie pilgrimage site Noma, it will close Feb. 25 (reopening late in the year), but a few alumni have opened restaurants around town where the cold and peckish can warm up with a bite or a glass of natural wine."

Featured are four different Copenhagen residents and experts who share some of their tips and ideas to enjoy this historic and charming town. Here is one example: "Conditori La Glace: An old patisserie from the end of the 19th century, it has a special pastry with cream inside, pink or yellow icing on top. It’s like any girl’s dream of a cake. Skoubogade 3, laglace.dk"

Here is one dining option cited: "Admiralgade 26: This restaurant is pleasing to the eye as well as the palate, with Danish and European décor from the ’20s onward. Admiralgade 26, admiralgade26.dk"

Also below are a few of the 20+ visuals that were a part of this interesting feature on Copenhagen.

This Wall Street Journal profile had 20+ pictures included. Here are a few sample visual highlights. First, from the Thorvaldsens Museum, a 19th-century sculpture museum, the curator at the city’s Glyptoteket Musuem calls this location “a little pocket of luxury, ornament and color.”:

From the Wall Street Journal October 2016, they have this headline: "Copenhagen Feeds Off Dining Boom" with this sub-head: "Seekers of luxury living are lured from upscale coastal suburbs to the city, where Michelin-starred restaurants are leading a surge of creative endeavors"

Here are some highlights from this real estate story that notes how fifteen years ago, wealthy people did not live in Copenhagen and were drawn to northern, coastal suburbs nicknamed the Whiskey Belt. This story says: "That is changing now, as a vibrant restaurant scene helps to fuel a growing demand for high-end homes in the capital city and sparks a new wave of luxury development. Copenhagen has become a major creative hub, setting trends in everything from architecture and television production to urban planning and subway design. Copenhagen’s residential real-estate prices have never been higher. The average price of residences has surpassed pre-crisis 2006 highs. Between the fourth quarter of 2014 and first quarter of 2016, home prices overall in Copenhagen rose by 37.4%. Christianshavn—the canal-lined, centuries-old neighborhood across the harbor from the city’s historic center—is another big draw. The area now offers a fair share of multimillion-dollar homes."

While the Wall Street Journal has a "pay wall" and many might not be able to read this full story, it does reflect this town being "hot" and attractive as a place to live and visit.

From the London/UK Telegraph September 2016, they had this headline: "Move over Melbourne – this is really the world’s most ‘liveable’ city" with these highlights: "If you’re confused about which city really is the world’s most “liveable”, now a new survey has given Copenhagen the bragging rights. The Danish capital came out on top in Metropolis Magazine’s annual study, which judges major cities around the world on housing, transportation, sustainability and culture. Berlin came second and Helsinki third. Copenhagen was praised for its public amenities, environmental ethos and transport infrastructure, which has a strong emphasis on cycling."

Lots of interesting background in this story for Copenhagen, Berlin and Helsinki, plus comparisons with other such world survey that have been completed to rank top cities.

Congratulations to Copenhagen and its wonderful people for their great history, architecture and character, etc.

Here is the view as we were approaching our cruise ship at the Nordre Toldbod Quay pier with the large Gefion Springvandet Fountain in the foreground.:

CPHShipDeparting.jpg

After boarding in July 2010 to sail north to Norway and the top of Europe, this was our ship lunch table view of the Opera House and spiral church tower that is a part of Copenhagen’s beautiful harbor. See the canal tour boats moving back and forth?:

CPHDeptLunchView.jpg

When departing Copenhagen, we had lunch on the back terrace of our ship. This is the visual to the right of our table showing others enjoying this spectacular dining. Like this view overlooking the Gefion Springvandet Fountain and St. Albans Anglican Church, plus the ground aspects of the Kastellet. This is one of the best preserved star fortresses in Northern Europe and was constructed in the form of a pentagram with bastions at its corners.:

CPHDepartLunchViews.jpg

This is the view to the north in Copenhagen harbor from our ship as we were getting ready to depart. This is the area where the Little Mermaid would have been positioned, but in the summer of 2010, she was in China We did, however, get to see this famed, but small statute in 2008. Farther to the north, you can see the larger cruise ship docking area, named Langelinie Pier, that is used by many others. In 2015, 680,000 cruise passengers visited Copenhagen via the more than 300 ships visit here.:

Here is another view of Copenhagen’s Nyhavn or “new” Harbor. This picture shows that this waterfront entertainment district is lined by 17th and early 18th century townhouses. Plus, bars, cafes and restaurants! This water area also has many historical wooden ships. It was constructed from 1670 to 1673, being dug by Swedish prisoners of war. It was a key "opening" from the sea to the old inner city where ships handled cargo and the catch of fishermen. It was "famous" for beer, sailors, and prostitution!! Surprised? Danish author Hans Christian Andersen lived at Nyhavn for 18 years. :

Hi, Beth! Appreciate your follow-up and this very good question. Not knowing your exact fitness levels, weather for that day, etc., I would only be guessing as to what works best for you. But, factually, with that map, it appears that going roughly west to this specific dining place and then doubling-back to return east to around their City Hall would require roughly twice as much time in walking back to the ship.

Do you have that much time and/or energy? Great mapping website and planning by you. Keep researching and asking smart questions.

Appreciate, Beth, this added info and follow-up. Great on your health, especially for your 75-year-old mother. Impressive! Biking would help and speed the process.

Good news for Copenhagen is its flatness. Makes walking and biking easier!! Weather is still a "wild card" to consider. Lots of wonderful and interesting places in Copenhagen for dining and desserts. Personally, I would keep this option as a potential to visit, but have other locations on your "back-up" list.

From the Lonely Planet guides in 2016, here are some of their highlight summary points for Tivoli: "Dating from 1843, tasteful Tivoli wins fans with its dreamy whirl of amusement rides, twinkling pavilions, carnival games and open-air stage shows. Visitors can ride the renovated, century-old roller-coaster, take in the famous Saturday evening fireworks display or just soak up the storybook atmosphere. A good tip is to go on Fridays during the summer season, when the open-air Plænen stage hosts free rock concerts from Danish bands (and the occasional international superstar) from 10pm. Tivoli is at its most romantic after dusk, when the fairy lights are switched on, cultural activities unfold, and the clock tower of the neighbouring Rådhus soars in the moonlight like the set of a classic Disney film. Each of Tivoli's numerous entertainment venues has a different character. Perhaps best known is the open-air pantomime theatre, built in 1874. Outside the main summer season, Tivoli also opens for around three weeks around Halloween and from mid-November to early January for Christmas."

Copenhagen does enjoy a blessing that could be a bit of a curse??!! This charming town has too many good things to do and see in too short of a limited time period. Some tours can save you time, especially for improving your logistics, getting you around faster, easier. Logistics can be challenge! Seeing and experiencing to the MAX so much in a short period of time requires advanced research and planning.

There is a nice fishing village, Dragør, south of Copenhagen that can be interesting. Below are some of my pictures from that historic, interesting village.

Located about seven miles from central Copenhagen, it has a population of 11,941 (2015). Per Wikipedia, Dragør has many well-preserved buildings with a historic area that is a "compact, picturesque maze of alleys with yellow-painted houses, red roofs and cobblestone streets built in the traditional Danish style. Many of these buildings are hundreds of years old. Dragør was a prosperous seafaring town in the latter half of the 19th century, and its charming harbour front is still in use.":

this is our entire plan

https://goo.gl/maps/WttDMcsfLpx

we have from 1 to 10pm

Appreciate these additional details and this walking map from Beth with your tentative plans. Great research and planning. It seems to show that it would involve three hours of walking. It could work out given your late evening sail away.

But, there would be time needed for seeing and experiencing fully some of these locations, any dining and drinking, etc. Plus, you will not get off of the ship right at 1 pm and you will want to aim to be back at your ship by 9 pm. It all takes time! AND, finally, your plan does not indicate any time for such great options as doing the canal ride, Tivoli, etc. Doing an opening "introductory tour" provide by the ship or a local vendor could allow you to get a better overview of Copenhagen and its sights, speed your logistics, etc. As noted earlier, you cannot do it "ALL" if there for two full days. Personally, I would work to maximize your abilities to see and do MORE here in this "treasure chest" than just only using a travel mode of "walking around" for the entire day. Keep considering your many, many excellent options for Copenhagen and your best logistics.

From the Travel Section of the London/UK Telegraph this morning, they had this headline: Why cool Copenhagen is the perfect place to beat the heat this summer with these highlights: Tivoli Gardens amusement park, which is currently celebrating its 175th anniversary, is one of many reasons to visit the Danish capital this summer. Start at Nyhavn, where the quayside buildings are filled with restaurants and bars, then follow the boardwalk around the Royal Danish Playhouse to Ofelia Plads, an outdoor cultural space that hosts events throughout summer. Head north along Larsens Plads to the Opera House, and make a quick detour left to the royal palaces of Amalienborg before continuing past the Royal Cast Collection and the Gefion Fountain, to Langelinie.

A nice map, plus pictures and other details/ideas are included in this profile and pitch for the "cool" of Copenhagen. Plus, below are some other helpful links from this newspaper and other recent sources.

They come top of a mouth-watering list of the world's best 500 culinary experiences that Lonely Planet has ranked for a new tome titled the Ultimate Eatlist - a foodie bucket-list that takes into account not just the taste, but the atmosphere that dishes are eaten in. Snacking on smorrebrod, or open sandwiches, in Copenhagen comes in at number six.

YES!! We super loved both the settings in and around Copenhagen, plus the excellent tasty foods we enjoyed there. Below is one of the many visuals featured with this story. Brings great memories from visiting this great city. More on my full live/blog about nearby top-ranked San Sebastian in NW Spain.

I am really late to this excellent thread about Copenhagen. We will be stopping here on our cruise next September. We are only in port for 8 hours and this is our first visit. It will be really difficult to see and do everything that we would like to.

Thank you for posting the beautiful photos! Makes me even more excited for our visit!
