Tipping the dealer

I'm on holiday

Recommended Posts

Tipping is discretionary, have I ever felt that if I started tipping I necessarily got better service, no; however, as a former waitress, if the dealer is entertaining I and I am winning I will tip a lot. If the dealer is stone faced and I am losing I will not tip. Also being a tad superstitious I feel that if you do a good deed the good deed fairy will "hit" :p you back. In blackjack there are two ways to tip, the first way is to place your tip to the right and slightly closer to the dealer. If you win the dealer pays you and the tip-he then takes his tip and winnings and puts it in the tip kitty. If you lose the dealer loses and takes your ante and the tip and puts in the kitty.

The second (and I feel more superior way) is to "ride the dealer on top" you don't even have to tell the dealer you are doing this. What you do is place the tip on the top of your ante stack. If you win you just give the dealer the tip straight out of the winnings and keep riding the bet (I usually add a little to the ante). This way the dealer gets a share of your run of luck and the only "loss" to you is the original tip. Ex. I'm riding 1 chip for the dealer on top, I win twice the dealer gets tipped out of my winnings, two chips (for his win on the tip), the third hand I lose, the only loss that came out of my kitty was the original tip of one chip. If was placing the tip next to the bet 3 chips would have come out of my kitty. Hope this was as clear as mud.

Now don't get too agressive with your tips especially at the beginning of the cruise. Remember the dealers are going to be there the entire trip. The last thing you want to do is give your winnings away in tips because it makes you feel good or makes you "good." If one particular dealer has given you great service then by all means send the a tip "toke."

I tip in craps for two reasons.

1. The dealers provide a great service and add entertainment to the game. They should be rewarded and much of their income is based on tips.

2. As a craps player, the game can get real complex if you have several bets going on at one time. The dealers will actually pay more attention to you and your gambling style and will look out for you. On several occassions I would forget to place a bet that I normally do on every come out roll or some jerkoff shooter simply grabs the dice and throws them while others are trying to place bets and when that happens your bet doesn't count. I found if the dealers know you are not a stiff then they actually will call out your bet for you, the one you would have normally placed. It has saved me lots of times.

I agree with Yo, as to 'how' to do in craps...I make a second bet on the pass line. Most will throw chips to the center, and call out two-way X. Meaning the bet is half for the player, half for the dealer. But the center bets are not the most stable play.

Other times, I simply hand it in, and say 'for the box'.

At roulette, you can 'ride on top' of your bets, or just hand it in after a pay off.

Or. Just ask. Nothing gets their attention like 'I have this chip here for a tip, where do I put it...?'

Note that often the 'minimum bet' is ignored when make a bet for dealers...meaning you can make a tip-bet of $1 on a $5 table, etc.

I love it when the table is leaning towards the dark side and I make a don't pass bet for them next to my don't pass bet. Call it a love hate relationship. Haha

I'm new to the gambling scene' date=' and want to start off right. What is the general rule of thumb regarding tipping the dealer? TIA![/quote']

I play Blackjack and tip a $1 token about once every 15 hands. Dealers appreciate it if you tip them as a bet to the side of your bet.

I play Roulette...alot. For every straight number I hit (35-1) I give the dealer one. They don't make a whole lot of money and it makes for a fun table when they are pulling for your numbers to come in. I do the same anywhere I play. It is fun to bond with the dealers you never have to wait for a drink or a clean ash tray! I gamble for pleasure not to make money. If you have to worry about how much you are going to lose then you should not be gambling. I consider the Casino my evening entertainment.

You have a great attitude when it comes to gambling. Good for you!

I on the other hand play to win and have a budget! Once I blow the amount I am willing to lose that is it for me. Also, if I am up big I know it is also time to stop because you will end up giving it back.

Tips come out of your winnings. Does the dealer tip you if you are loosing? Does he change his game because you are loosing.

I live in Las Vegas and I have never been able to figure out why anyone tips the dealer.

Why would anyone tip their cabin steward or waiter either? Do you? If so why?

It is to keep the dealer on your side in terms of offering good advice.

It is because the dealer works for a living in a Service Industry job...I don't take advice on the bets I make. Ever buy a round of drinks at a bar for a good occasion?

A dealer provides a service, just like any position on the cruiseline. They earn a lot of their wages via tips. If they provide you a good service then it is customary to tip. Now, I am not saying to give them a huge part of your winnings but at least something.

I have a very complex system of betting which involves a lot of bets going on at the same time and tossing a lot of chips on the table. When the dealers see that I appreciate their help and I show it by offerring a tip they tend to make my bets for me. And if one of my routine bets doesn't make it on the table because some arsewipe decides to throw the dice and not wait for folks to finish placing bets a dealer will call out my bet on my behalf even if my chips didn't make it to the table. It has saved me lots of times. Worth every time to "get them on your side."

For people other than my own party - no.

I also do not see why I am expected to tip a bartender for pouring a drink from a bottle or for giving me a bottle of coke or water. Complex drinks yes - drinks my 7 year old granddaughter could do - no.

WOW... All I can say is these boards never cease to amaze me. Do you go back to the same bar all the time? because by now I would guess that they are spitting in your drinks. Do you tip in restaurants? Never mind, I really don't want to know. Happy Cruising everyone, I am out of here.

That logic is flawed. The bartender gets an hourly wage from the owner. Whether he makes 10 complex drinks or 40 simple drinks for you does not matter. To him, all drinks should be simple to make. He has all the recipes, ingredients, equipment and glasses available to him right there.

When you get your car valet parked, and when they bring it back to you, will you tip the porter?

I never valet park. It is usually quicker to get my car when I leave than to wait for someone else to get it. Besides, I can always find free parking anywhere I go.
