brian_uk Posted June 6, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 6, 2009 If you look through the thread " Checking the Vacancies " started by BruinSteve you will see my various posts which culminated with Frank Del Rio making me an offer to design my perfect itinerary in return for a free trip in an OS. I do have my own thoughts and have started to set them out but any interesting ideas would be welcome and your reasons.....not just saying the name of a Port. My next post below sets out my initial thoughts and I hope some of you will join in. Brian
brian_uk Posted June 6, 2009 Author #2 Share Posted June 6, 2009 Well certainly some interesting ideas put forward. Paulchilli - I personally am not that interested in the African Coast and doubt that the time constraints of say a 14 day trip would make that possible from London. The very first Port that came to mind, based upon a Med Itinerary, was Lisbon. I have visited mosty European Capitals but never been there. Yes I know that Lisbon is not in the Med but it would make a great starting point. Palma Mallorca is a fabulous City and we go there frequently for weekends and there is much to see and do and The Old Town is great too. I also think that it should include a few old favorites so I would end either in Civitavecchia or Venice. Its the bits inbetween that I want to think about. Interestingly the one place I would exclude is Monte Carlo. I hate it !! Our last 2 cruises have included it and the first thing we do is head for the Station to get out of town. Bonifacio has little to offer other than a spectacular entrance. Nautica moored at Sea facing formidable Cliffs and it was not until the tenders moved around them that the entrance to a very small sailing harbour was revealed. A few shops and cafes and a trip to the clifftop was all. So these are my immediate thoughts but I will take " on board " any suggestions you may have and the reasons. Let me also add that for me this is an interesting excercise and nothing is expected from FDR in return. Brian Brian
tropicalkerry2002 Posted June 6, 2009 #3 Share Posted June 6, 2009 To FDR: I would have no idea how to figure out how long it would take to get from one port to the next, so could I just present an itinerary of ports, and Oceania would figure out how many days it would take? I would indicate where I think an overnight on board would be nice.It could end up being one of your 35 day cruises... Thanks Marian
Druke I Posted June 6, 2009 #4 Share Posted June 6, 2009 Interesting challenge - developing new itineraries. I'm still anxiously waiting to see some deck plans for Marina, the little teasers in Passages being woefully inadequate!

seafare Posted June 6, 2009 #7 Share Posted June 6, 2009 What a challenge and a lot of fun. Just the thought of winning is incentive enough to try and who knows Oceania may just come up with 3 great trips. The wonderfull press about the contest and prizes will be the "cherry on the cake". In this economy and the "24" hour cycle of news good and bad, we all can use a bit of fun. Jill
Benita Posted June 6, 2009 #8 Share Posted June 6, 2009 Ok, I'll move mine over from the other post - won't win, because most people have Iceland on the bottom of their to-go list, but if it gives Oceania food for thought, it will be worth it Day 1 Copenhagen (Or Amsterdam, whichever makes the most sense) Day 2 At sea Day 3 Geiranger, Norway Day 4 Lerwick, Shetland Islands Day 5 Torshavn, Faroe Islands Day 6 at sea Day 7 Akureyri, Iceland Day 8 Isafjordur, Iceland Day 9 Reykjavik, Iceland Day 10 Reykjavik, Iceland Day 11 at sea Day 12 Scrabster, Scotland Day 13 at sea Day 14 Copenhagen (or Amsterdam) I gave an overnight to Reykjavik, although the second day can be removed and still have a great cruise itinerary. Right now, Azamara operates the cruise out of Copenhagen, but Amsterdam is easier to get to for much of the US (expecially this Floridian). portpuno Posted June 6, 2009 #12 Share Posted June 6, 2009 This is a great idea. Here is my suggestion Paris (Rouen/Le Havre) St Malo Bourdeaux (great city to visit and walk around) Lisbon Sea day Porta Delgada, Azores Funchal, Madeira Tenerife, Canary Islands Santa Cruz, Canary Islands Lanzarote, Canary Islands Sea Day Casablanca Tangiers Gibraltar (fun place with apes, plus great view from top) Barcelona Several other close ports could be inserted like Cadiz, Seville, Valencia, or Palma de Mallorca. This includes all the stops you normally have to do a transatlantic to visit without the many sea days.
brian_uk Posted June 6, 2009 Author #13 Share Posted June 6, 2009 Frank Please forgive me but I actually think that you have " lowered the bar " to the point that the original idea becomes nonsensical. It seems that any length cruise 7/14/35 days or even round the world would be considered without any rhyme or reason for the suggestions. What about if two people offer the same Route............. For me this was a thought process of the places I would like to visit and using the reality of a 14 day itinerary. Possibly a mix of old and new; differences in Cultures en route etc etc. It has become a Corporate Gig with Judges rather than an idle musing of ideas. tropicalkerry2002 Posted June 6, 2009 #15 Share Posted June 6, 2009 I would start in: Vancouver, with an overnight, Victoria Seattle with an overnight sea day or 2 San Francisco, for 2 nights( been there 3 times and still haven't seen enough!) no idea how many sea days, then Honolulu with an overnight Maui with an overnight OR Kauai more sea days Marshall Islands(or somewhere to break up the days) Sea days Fiji Sea days whatever port in Australia gets you to the Great Barrier Reef Sydney with an overnight. If someone could give me a ball park figure how many days this would be, I'd like to know!
Bruin Steve Posted June 6, 2009 #16 Share Posted June 6, 2009 I will take a shot on new and unusual: 14 nights Cadiz (Seville) to Lisbon...The "West Africa Cruise": 1 SEVILLE (Cadiz), Spain --Embark 2 GIBRALTAR 3 CASABLANCA, Morocco 4 SAFI/MARRAKECH, Morocco 5 AT SEA 6 LAAYOUNE, Western Sahara 7 DAKHLA, Western Sahara 8 AT SEA 9 DAKAR, Senegal 10 Cape Verde 11 At Sea 12 Las Palmas, Gran Canaria 13 At Sea 14 At Sea 15 Lisbon, Portugal--Disembark I think it's reasonable as to time allotted...It could be varied slightly to start or end in Barcelona instead of Cadiz or Lisbon in order to mesh in with other current cruises... Paul123 Posted June 6, 2009 #23 Share Posted June 6, 2009 Frank......you've done it again. Magnificent promotion. You are really quite unique and represent a corporate boss who really does listen to his customers. We've exchange a few pleasant e-mails in the not too distant past and here again you're showing just how on the ball you are. Congratulations again on running what appears to be two great brands. Paulchili Posted June 6, 2009 #25 Share Posted June 6, 2009 My third (and last) suggestion can follow the cruise from Sydney to Manila (see post # 19): Manila Sea Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia) Brunei Sea Saigon Sea Sihanoukville (Cambodia – Angkor Wat) Sihanoukville Sea Sea Djakarta Sea Malacca Kuala Lumpur Phuket (or Penang) Singapore It is 17 days but current Singapore to Sydney is 19 days. From Singapore head to the Med via the Indian Ocean as before or head for Cape Town (to avoid the pirates and explore new destinations like Maldives, Seychelles, Kenya/Tanzania, Zanzibar, Mauritius, Reunion, Mozambique, etc)). These obviously would be once a year cruises, much like the repositioning cruises O has now, but with a twist.
