Security cameras on board

Hey all, I'm actually asking this question for my sister who just returned from a cruise.

 

Do most ships have tons of security cameras? I didn't notice a lot when I was on my cruise but someone mentioned they hide them in the light fixtures and stuff.

 

Do the elevators have cameras? Apparently my sister and a gentleman who works in the dining room were getting a little fresh in one of the elevators now she's worried he may get in trouble :rolleyes:

They have cameras everywhere, and they disguise them so you don't know where they are--and yes, I've seen them in elevators. I just have to ask, what was a crew member doing in a passenger elevator? They're not supposed to use passenger elevators, and crew members aren't supposed to be getting fresh with passengers in public areas of the ship, and passenger elevators are considered public areas. If he was seen going into a passenger elevator, he could be fired. And if anything else went on between them, be it in another public space or a passenger cabin, that can be a real big problem. Not a smart thing to do for either of them.

Assume cameras are nearly everywhere on cruise ships, especially on balconies! As far as a crew member getting 'a little fresh'....he should be fired.

Yeah, I definitely agree it wasn't smart, but that's my younger sister for you. I'm not sure of the details (told her I didn't want to know!), but I assume him being on a passenger elevator would be just as bad as her being in a crew elevator so either way that is a problem!

The difference is that if she is seen in a crew elevator, she cannot be fired. Her friend might be, but it would have to be obvious they were together. I guess there was little doubt about that.

tons of cameras...the older ships are a little less creative about hiding them but on all ships they are all over. Very noticable at bars, the casinos and outside decks

It depends on why he was in a passenger elevator. On HAL Oosterdam, my cabin was pretty far aft, below the dining room, and crew making room service deliveries and returning from same used the passenger elevators all the time, because they were right by the galley. I believe crew who are not part of the 'service staff' (wait staff, housekeeping, etc.) use the public elevators freely. EM

It depends on what kind of 'crew' you're talking about, department heads (the guys in the whites), entertainers, etc., can be in the public areas and elevators, etc.

According to an NCL exec, the cameras are recording every public space on the ship including behind the scenes, except the rest rooms,. I think it was the Travel channel, cruising Do's and Don't, or just a cruising insider show.

most modern cruise ships have thousands of cameras in all public/employee areas as well as the monitoring the outside of the ship. They generally are not in the cabins or bathrooms(although your balcony is generally on a camera) Sometimes they hide them sometimes they are visible. This includes all elevators. They have them on every inch of the casino just as they do in Vegas. They tape them too for later use. They also track every time your room is opened by a card key(or similar).

They probably wouldn't check the camera in the elevator or in most places unless there was reason to do so such as a complaint. The camera's are basically a CYA so they can quickly check the overboard incidents and complaints against crew or passengers...

The "gentleman" should be aware of the security devices around the ship. It was not your sister who got him into trouble.

On NCL Jade-and I presume on all Jewel class ships-there's a bridge viewing room, and some of the screens show what's happening in various spots on board. So-someone's dad said; "Quick! Down to 7 and run along the deck so we can watch you up here!" Missing TV, perhaps?-jocap.

"Generally not"?:eek: If we ever learned that there were security cameras in our private cabin or bathroom, it would be the last time we ever cruised with that line. I'm not inclined to make much of a public fuss about things, but I'd also go right to the media with the fact, assuming I could prove it.

 

I'm fine with cameras just about anywhere and I don't care if some people think, "Oh, it's okay to have cameras in my cabin and bathroom if it means there would be 'proof' if something happened." Some things are private--Period. What my DH and I do (no, not just that...) in the privacy of our cabin are just that, private. That he snores sometimes and that I'm pretty sure I drool from time to time while asleep are not things that some security guy needs to record. As for the bathroom, no one should ever be allowed to record those private activities. And consider the voyeuristic opportunities if cameras were allowed in the cabins and bathrooms.

 

For the balconies, I was under the impression that the cameras "look" along the exterior of the ship, including the outside edges of the balconies, but that there are not individual cameras aimed into each separate balcony. Is it true that there is a camera aimed directly into each balcony? As that's part of "our" space, especially when at sea when it's reasonable to expect a measure of privacy, I would have a problem with it. Considering that the camera would be able to see directly into the cabin itself when the curtains are open, it would be the same as having a camera actually in the cabin. The whole point of spending the extra for a balcony cabin is to give us a view, a place to be outside that is private, and fresh air. It's interesting that so many people respond to questions about topless decks on some ships with, "If you want to sunbathe topless, use your private balcony." That's not going to be an option if in fact their "private" balcony is "public" domain.

 

Regardless, the idea that "generally" there aren't cameras in the cabins and bathrooms is chilling, IMO. There should never be cameras in the cabins or bathrooms.

I just meant that he is the employee and should be very aware of the rules. yes, OP's sister was involved, but he is the one with the responsibility.

They should have done what a co-worker of mine did when he struck up a "particularly cozy" friendship with a female blackjack dealer... They snuck into one of the lifeboats. Afterward, he accompanied her to the crew area and hung out for the rest of the night.

If the security cameras are anything like my workplace then nobody ever looks at the ruddy screen - unless it's found that something has gone missing and we have to play it back.

That's what I would think too, which is why reading that "generally" there aren't cameras there is a more than a bit surprising. Then again, I always assume that someone might be more up-to-date than I am on what kinds of security someone might freakishly think is "necessary." I have heard that some cruise lines were considering adding invididual cameras for the balconies. If that happened, we'd want to know in advance so as to not book with that cruise line.

Your impression is correct. They do have cameras looking alongside the exterior of the ship, but there aren't any aimed directly at the balcony (at least on the ships I've been on). Private balconies are not considered 'public' areas.
