Thursday had to book a flight for this coming Thursday - very long flight, no seats left showing available. I know Frontier holds the first couple of rows out and makes those available day of the flight. Does US Airways do this or better, might there be some available seats when I do check in 24hrs from flight time?

All airlines hold back some seat assignments from pre-booking. Whether or not your flight will have any released for OLCI is the question - not a US flyer, but would assume that some would be let go for OLCI and others held for airport/gate assignment. Be online at the 24 hour mark.
