1099

Probably a stupid question, but if the ship is registered in the Bahamas or other foreign port, why do they have to file anything with the IRS, especially given they will only operate in International waters? I'm not doubting it, just wondering why they do it.

thx

I'm wondering too. I think they just wanted to scare him into losing the rest of the cruise :D

I don't think that is a wise idea. I can remember that someone got into a lot of trouble for doing this. They were able to prove that they were not his as he could not explain the footprints all over the tickets.

A safe way is to have your friends family co workers etc save any lottery tickets that they have including scratch offs. They are tax write offs.

However if you do not get a 1099 form the best method to keep your winnings in cash (assuming it is a reasonable amount) and just pay things off as you go. Instead of charging groceries or a night out to dinner pay cash. If the money never shows up on the books then you shouldn't have any issues. Deposits with a lot of 0's tend to get the attention of the auditor.

Won $2500, will claim it. Will also ask CCL for a win-loss statement to show losses also in case there are any IRS questions about losses. Did not ask my ss number, but checked my drivers license info.

Although they might not have asked for SS number, isn't a SS number necessary as part of the actual cruise registration/ticketing process? In other words, don't they already have that info on all of us? Seems to me that I had to provide it for all family members and friends but again, we have not been on CCL for a couple of years now.

But CCL are great at providing win/loss statements which we have not found to be the case with RCCL.

And the sad thing is that although I have received MANY 1099/W-g (can't remember which ones exaclty!) I still managed to show a loss when the yearly win/loss statement arrived. But then the casino is one of my favorite things to do on a cruise so no complaints from me - win or lose!

why is it automatic... when there are a lot of NON-US citizens on the ships.... Why should Uncle Sam care what a Canadian like me wins or losses?

It's automatic because that's what the US government wants and the Canadian government agrees, along with a load of other governments, however Canada is a treaty country, so money is not withheld, actually now that I say that, that's for land based casinos, I am not 100% sure how the ships work.

Declare it, it's just not worth the bs that could come with not declaring it.

A little trick I used last year, if your in a state that allows sports/horse betting, take a trip to a casino/horse track, grab as many losing tickets as you can find, instant deduction.

Have you met my good friend Pete? Pete...or Mr. Rose as many of us growing up in Cincinnati called him...provided tons of horse bet slips during his tax evasion trial. I'm sure his fellow inmates loved to hear "tax tips" like this one.
