Blackjack Players Step Inside!

Yo Eleven

Recommended Posts

Hello! I figured I would start a spinoff thread from our very successful successful Craps discussion. Perhaps we can start others like this if the topic is getting hot as I can see Blackjack is really discussed here on this site.

I'll be the first to start. I used to be a heavy Blackjack player. I had a lot of fun playing it until "morons" started to annoy me. The last straw was when someone clown was splitting tens and doing all sorts of stupid stuff. YES, it you are free to play how you like, but if you make the other players at the table miserable then in my opinon you are out of line.

I then thought I had a solution. I thought maybe the morons play only at the 5 dollar minimum table. Boy was I wrong. The same fools play at $25 minimum table and are even more arrogant. I even tried to find a table that was empty and play alone. That did work, but a few minutes later the table gets filled. So that ended. I got so sick of the game and the fools that play it I forced myself to learn craps. As soon as I learned the game and developed my system I rarely ever play Blackjack. I think I know a lot and still like to discuss the game for those who are interested.

So anyone here splitting Tens? :D

I find it tougher to play on ships than Vegas. There are a lot more BJ Virgins on ships, with the age at 18, and they don't know the rules. If I sit down and see someone hit on a 12 when a dealer is showing a 6, that is usually my sign to pick up the chips and leave. The best game on ships is craps as the dice thrower really has no say on what will come up, its all luck.

Wow this is one very interesting point you made. It certainly has validity now that I think about it. Do you think one would play with a better batch of players on Holland America? Not trying to make an old folks joke but thinking perhaps Blackjack players on those ships will know what the heck they are doing!

If you let some one else's stupid play bother you, then stop gambling or go to a private table to play :D

Hmmmmm. I wouldn't snicker at you on number one, but laugh. But it wouldn't bother me on you staying on the soft 18 though.

Why in the world would you not split the 16 against the 10 or A? You should ALWAYS split eights. Having a 16 sucks. Why keep it if you don't have to?

My sentiments exactly. Wierd, I could've written that exact post.

It's hard enough to win in the casinos without a bunch of doofasses making it harder.

And please split 8's

I know everyone will jump my bones but......

1.You are helped as often as you are hurt when someone at the table makes a stupid play. We only seem to remember when we are hurt. The cards are random and your results are based upon how you play.

2. I have had a number of dealers suggest that not splitting 8s vs a 10 is not a bad play.

OK I am hiding under my desk!

Cheers

I saw a kid double a hard 16. His explaination, "he was trying to change the tables luck".

Basic strategy only works if you play a massive amounts of hands. It is based on the law of big numbers. If you play millions of hands then you can't cheat math. However if you play rarely you are just trying to catch lightning in a bottle. Right place right time kinda thing.

The only reason I like playing with "smart" players is the dealers know what you are going to do and pretty much play for you and you can focus more on telling jokes and chatting with those at your table.

Most of the people who do the dumbest things have never played blackjack at landbased casinos (or done so extremely rarely). They are on the ship to have fun, so if someone explains what splitting pairs is, they split pairs even tens, much the same as they will try something new off the dinner menu that they would never order at a restaurant at home.

What they do doesn't affect me. In fact, the more they play poorly, and lose, the more money the casino makes overall and the less likely the casino will put in even more restrictive rules than they have now (6-5 blackjack payoff for example).

It is okay for a beginner to learn the ropes. Most intelligent beginners will seek help and avoid making the dumb moves again. There are several "experienced" fools that are narrow minded and get mad when they are politely told what they are doing isn't the way to go about playing. They snap back saying "You play your own game and I'll play mine. Leave me alone"

I can't help myself either. LOL Well all things considered in the long run youi will be ahead always splitting eights than not. Yeah you may lose two hands here and there but will have more of a chance of a push or a win.

OK..I am at home, cocktail in hand,so I am going to make a statement that always gets me beat up.

If you play stupid you will lose and lose big. If the guy to your right or left plays stupid, over the long run,he has no effect on your results.

Because the cards are random and we have no idea what the next card will be....sometimes you get hurt but sometimes you are helped.

Think about it honestly....It is impossible that, when your tablemate does something really stupid, that the next card is ALWAYS one that hurts you.

OK..I am going to hide under my bed.:D

Cheers

Wow you must have some good liquor. Hahaha. Yes in the long run it would have no effect. The point I am trying to make is why would you want to play next to a stupid player. You never know how he or she is gonna play. One time they play right and another time they play stupid. What if you like to make a big bet or plan on doubling down. I think you would want a straight shooter next to you rather than a fool who can't decide what is right or wrong. Now with that said go get me a beer. :)

You can come out from under the bed now. You have finally found someone else that agrees with you.

Bad players at the table have no long term effect on your winnings or losings. I find it so funny as to how normally rational people can become so superstitious about gambling. It's time to leave the rabbit's foot at home and think rationally about the random nature of cards.

Actually, I love it when these superstitious types sit down at my poker table. These people will let their irrational fears and "lucky hands" cause them to bleed money onto the table. Cards are pieces of plastic with no memory: pocket kings are not ace magnets, people do not always hit two pair when you have aces, and the idiot at the blackjack table does not cause you to lose money.

Now, I'm gonna go hide under my bed.

All right, I came out for a couple of minutes to stir the pot up a little. The following practice always seems to raise a couple of eye brows at the table:

When I have blackjack against the dealer's ace up, I never take even money. Somebody always has something negative to say to me when I do this, but I don't care.

This situation actually affords the player a 4% advantage over the house. Why do you think the house is so quick to offer you even money for your hand? I'm not going to give away a 4% advantage for even money. I don't care how many people tell me I'm an idiot. I just smile, accept the outcome of the hand, and laugh all the way to the bank.

I'm gonna go hide again.

Hello! Looks like we have a lot of bed hiders here. What is up with that? LOL!

BBQ Lover-Looks like you make one great rack of ribs. Yummy!

Anyway-I never understood why anyone would take even money. The same way as why anyone takes insurance, or surrenders their hand (if available).

Three sucker bets in blackjack in my opinion.

Hi all... been hanging out at the craps thread and just found this one. I'm a long time Blackjack player - been at it in casinos since 1964 (when it was only Vegas) and seen a lot. These days the sweetie I'm married to also is a player, and we do the tables together - gonna break her in on craps before our next cruise in December.

Couple of things about what's been said already:

I just ignore those who do "stupid" things at the table. The deck is not actually random, but with 8 deck shoes it's pretty close. If they really bother you and you don't feel like hopping around like a jackrabbit, then sit third base - the dealer won't do anything stupid!

The ones I truly pity are those who drink too much and are not even aware of what they are doing.

I never give anyone unsolicited advice on how or what to play. It's their money. When someone asks me what to do, I always answer something like "The book says to ..."

I also never take even money on a blackjack. What many people don't realize that this great sounding deal ("Only sure thing in Vegas" I've heard dealers say) is nothing more than taking Insurance! A bad bet is a bad bet no matter how well it's sugar coated.

Note to Yo (breaking my own "no advice" rule): Surrender is not ALWAYS a "stupid play". When the odds are less than 1 in 2 that you will win the hand, it's better to take half the money and run. However there are really only a few cases where this is true, namely 16 against 10, and 16 against ace (close play here). The thing is that as soon as some noobies learn about surrender they go wild doing it when they should not.

Hey AndytheK-Great post!!!!! :D

Regarding the 8 card shoes. I am seeing a lot of casinos now putting in "continuous shuffle machines." Although there is still a shoe, but wouldn't you now say that these continuous shuffle machines make it more random. I was on the local gaming boat yesterday and they are replacing the hand shuffling/auto shuffling with the continuous shuffling machines. Many folks are very upset about this. I am puzzled as to why? I asked many that were griping about it if they are card counters. They all replied, NO. Then what the heck is the problem them? This system only hurts card counters right? If you are playing basic strategy so what? Also, it makes the game go a lot faster. Who wants to sit there and watch the dealer shuffle the cards for several minutes. B-O-R-I-N-G!

Your point of the surrender is well taken. So it is only 99% stupid them. HAHA!

But I tell you though in regards to stupid play. It really does annoy me when some fool splits tens for example. Many say it shouldn't bother me. But it does. Hence why I rarely play BJ anymore.

Okay I had to call in the expert on this one.

Even Henry agrees that you should ALWAYS split eights. Read more about why here. Then crawl back under the desk. :D
