Can you purchase bonine, pepto, bandages on the ship

Recommended Posts

One of my favorite cruising stories involves my friend Bob.

I belong to a community choral group, and a number of members planned a group cruise together. I booked a room by myself in the fall, figuring I'd wait until rehearsals started up again in January to start asking around at rehearsals to find a roommate.

Well, Bob joined the group in January, and when he heard about the cruise, wanted to go. I've known him for about 15 years, maybe more, and we're good friends, so I agreed to share my cabin with him. (Just the cabin, y'all! :) )

Bob is a bit of a lightweight when it comes to alcohol; he'd had a really rough week at work right before the cruise, and decided at sailaway he really wanted to try a Long Island Iced Tea for the first time. Well, halfway through the glass he was looped! in fact, he was still giddy at dinner!!

Needless to say, the dear man woke up the next morning with a hangover. Neither of us had any aspirin or tylenol packed, so he had to go down to the shop on the Promenade to get some.

The little bottle of tylenol he came back with cost him more than the Long Island Iced Tea had!

I now make sure that I have my ziplock bag with the tylenol, bonine, pepto, immodium, first aid kit etc - whenever and whereever I travel!

I doubly concur w/ all already said.

My mother woke the first morning (since she didn't listen to me to bring something just in case) and had to wait several extra hours until the store opened so I could get her some motion sickness meds. Why waste your time being ILL!!! Don't forget it :)

The medical center has a few items available in a vending machine and they are available all of the time. The machines are before you actually enter. I bought bandaids and I think neosporin. They have just a few things but you shouldn't need too much. I am sorry I don't remember how much or whether they took coins or bills.

I don't know from experience but some on these boards have said you can get seasick meds from customer service.

Try to make a check list with everything you might need and get small quantities. The ship store is very expensive and has few choices.

Have a great cruise.:)

I can't count the time we have spent on our vacations hunting down meds while in ports. Spent way too much for it too. The ships store does sell small amounts of these items too but again very pricey.

Now I make a list of meds/supplies we might need and head to Walmart and buy them and keep them in a large ziplock bag. If we don't need them one of our traveling companions might. We have saved $$ and time doing this. I keep the bag in the suitcase and check the expire dates before the next trip or replace items we have used. At one time or another we have used each of the meds I have brought along, I have also raided the bag at home too.

One cruise I caught a bad cough and had to buy some cough syrup in a port- it cost me $14! The same kind cost me less than $3 at home. Pays to be prepared.

We always pack a small first aid kit, immodium, ibuprofen, cold medicine, allergy medicine, and hydrocortisone cream. Some places, especially in Europe, you need a prescription for antibiotic and hydrocortisone cream.

Don't buy Pepito on the ship:eek:. You will be red flagged for being sick, and maybe quarantined to your cabin:(

You can get out of being red flagged if you explain the purchase. I went to buy pepto on our first cruise (before i learned that I have to bring everything!) and they said, "Why do you need it?" and the looked at me funny. I told them that I get reflux and this is the best thing for it. they were like, "okay." if you give an acceptable reason, you won't be quarantined. i mean, we're on a cruise: people do get motion sick and they do drink too much. :-)

I am prepared like a boyscout when I go on a cruise. I bring the whole pharmacy with me. :-)

In addion to RX meds, bring:

meclizine

benadryl

simethicone

ibuprofen

tylenol

excedrin

tums

zantac

mylanta

pepto

immodium

bacitracin

liquid benadryl (stings)

band aids

SPF stick and spray

aloe vera

and, most importantly, for all you ladies, don't forget conditioner! I had to pay 20 bucks on my first cruise for conditioner in the salon! i have long hair, so i bring a regular bottle of shampoo and conditioner and pretty much go through it before the week is up

The shop is not always open when you may need items, so it is best to bring a few essentials along. We keep a small zip lock bag of medical essentials packed and ready to go.

I also pack those essentials, but I always keep them in my carry on so I don't forget them.

That little vending machine is a great little secret. You can buy small packets of antacids etc. I needed some antibacterial ointment and was able to get some for 50 cents. BUT you need coins. We had to go up to the casino and get change to use it. So either bring coins or bring what you think you may need.

I have always gotten Bonine at the customer service desk, no charge. Has this changed?

I also bring from home, a small first aid kit, Pepcid AC, Pepto, imodium, tylenol, ibupropian and presciption antibiotics for upper resp. as well as cipro for travelors diarea. If you tell you dr. where you are going and what you need I have never had a problem getting some meds for "just in case" My dr has also made suggestions for other meds I might not have thought of. Of course, he trusts me to use good judgement as far as whether they are needed.

I am immune compromised... having had Breast CA with chemo and Radiation, West Nile Disease and now Lupus all in the last 8 years.

I also always travel with insurance....

They call me "Lucky"

I have discovered a couple facts in the sundires store on RCI. One, they do not sell chewing gum anywhere on the ship or so I was told at that store. Two, I was told they don't sell Pepto Bismo and Immodium at the store because they want someone who needs such remedies to go to the clinic and be checked out to make sure they don't have Noro.

My advice is to pack small sizes of medications for any contingency that might arise such as Pepto, Neosporine, bandages, Milk of Magnesia, etc. That will save hassle, time, money and inconvenience.
