Were you bothered by second hand smoke in your balcony?

Were you bothered by second hand cigarette smoke on your balcony?

Wondering if some balcony locations are more susceptible to cigarette smoke drifting into their balcony?

Yes, I have been several times. Rooms in the bow when the ship is moving won't get as much, but if the ship is docked, then it has everything to do with which way the wind is blowing. I just go in the cabin until they are done.

Yes, we were woken several times at night by a smoke-filled room. Ended up we closed the balcony door at night, missed out on the sound of the ocean. :(

We were slightly aft of midships, and I believe the smoker/s were one cabin further aft. Knowing where we were and the time of the year, we probably had a strong breeze blowing from slightly aft of side on, blowing towards our side of the ship.

No. We were on Radiance on the hump as well, 8th deck. We kept the balcony door open all of the time, even at night and never smelled anything. We hung out on the balcony constantly even while in port and never noticed anything.

I think if you have a high sensitivity to the irritants in it and have a breathing problem then you should probably look at some promenade balcony or ocean views. But if you're just adverse to the smell then I think you would be fine. Just go into it knowing that its allowed, so if you smell some just walk in and come out again in a minute or two. If it's really bad, then I always recommend a friendly talk with the smokers and ask if you can work out a system. I know of people that would knock on the partition if they were coming out for a smoke. They waited a minute and then lit up if they heard nothing. If someone was out there they just said thanks and went in for a few minutes. I'd like to think that most people can be adults and work it out :D But I'm sure there is always a few loony tunes out there...:p

Oh, yes, several times. Worst was on the Serenade, Deck 9, aft side of the hump. This year, Liberty Deck 10 forward was better. Still had some secondhand smoke, but wasn't nearly as bad as the one time on the Serenade - won't stop me from sailing her again, though.

First, I am an ex smoker and I do feel that smokers have rights where it is permitted. ;)

I have to admit that we were really bothered when we had a pipe smoker on one side of us, (I normally love the smell of a pipe, but his tobacco stunk) and a cigar smoker on the other side of our hump cabin balcony all the time. We did not spend much time on our balcony at all.

I would never say anything to them as they are allowed to smoke there. ;)

First of all let me say, I am a non-smoker and I do sympathise with those of you who suffer from other people's smoke.

BUT

Those people smoking on their balcony are not breaking the rules. Those of you leaving your balcony door open all night ARE.

Leaving doors open causes problems with the air conditioning not just for you but for your neighbours and not just those that are smoking either.

Only one one cruise. It was from the balcony below us and woke us up in the middle of the night. Yes, the ship was moving, no the smoke was not blown away, but rather blown right into our cabin.

We closed the door, unfortunately the damage was already done and the cabin smelled bad the rest of the night. From then on we would check to see if the smoker was down there smoking before leaving the door open.

Before anyone says anything about leaving balcony doors open all night, we were in the Med in October and it was not hot outside. We did not say anything to her about her smoke as we understand she was breaking no rules smoking on her balcony.

One cruise, yes, we had a chain smoking cigar smoker. Really stunk, so we limited our time on the balcony. Second cruise with balcony, no smoking! Spent as much time as we could out there.

Yes, we know that they are allowed to smoke on the balcony but do they have to smoke non-stop?

I'm a non-smoker, not allergic to smoke, but just don't like smelling it.

We have had a balcony on all of our cruises except an inside on the Fantasy. I have smelled cigarette smoke only occasionally on any of them. Never enough to bother me, just a whiff now and then. No big deal.

I think if someone was smoking on their balcony every time I went to mine, I might introduce myself and ask him/her if we could come to some sort of agreement, in a nice way of course. I think most smokers would be easy to work with if you speak nicely about it to them.

Cigar smoke, to me, is way worse than cigarette smoke though. I would hate to be next door to a chain cigar smoker.

As a nonsmoker who has been lucky to have travelled on RCCL 6 times in the last year in a balcony cabin. I Have never been bothered by smokers. Was by a whistling sound which the steward said was caused by a balcony door left open. Also screaming kids and door slaming at 2-3 am. But hay they are on holiday. Rather a smoker than those passengers anytime

That is why we keep making the recommendation on the survey card to provide one side of the ship that is "no smoking" including the balcony.

I think that would be almost impossible. While it may sound great in theory, I don't know how it could possibly be enforced and I think there aren't enough smokers to fill a whole side of a ship.

Celebrity has a very strict smoking policy, including no smoking on balconies, any of the bars, or the casino. On my Solstice cruise, I never once smelled cigarette smoke on my balcony, so they're able to hold the policy pretty well.

Slight exageration I think, if I woke up in a smoke filled room, I would be out of the cabin fast, and be listening for the sound of the ocean from the safety of a lifeboat.

Is this really what people worry about before going on vacation? Do you worry about being bothered by smoke when you go to the mall or any other store where the smokers are outside the door right when you walk in? It just seems like such a non issue.

I am sure you know you have just started a war by calling smoke bothering people a non-issue.Try telling that to all of the people that cannot tolerate the second hand smoke.

First, let me say that I have not paid hundreds of dollars "extra" to stand outside of the mall and breathe second hand smoke!

To answer the OP's question, yes and no.

We have been on seventeen cruises and the first fifteen were with inside cabins. Only in last two years have we paid extra for a balcony. We love having a balcony and won't go back to the insides. Our first balcony was on the Jewel in February of 2008. We were adjacent to two chain smokers. I lost count of the times that we retreated to inside. This past winter we were on the Independence and appreciated the chance to enjoy our balcony with fresh air as we did not have smokers on either side of us, or if we did, they were more considerate!

We have been cruising since the mid 90's. When we started, folks were allowed to smoke everywhere and they did! More than once, we left a show due to the smoke. Now where smoking is only allowed on one side of the Lido deck, the casino, and in selected lounges, we just avoid those areas. Why, however, should we avoid our balcony?

To the 80% of us who do not smoke, it is just a matter of time before the "rules" will change and our right to breathe will not be infringed!
