lori450 Posted December 12, 2014 #1876 Share Posted December 12, 2014 We will be in Sweden this December. We are first going to Bjorkliden and then will be coming down to Stockholm. We will have only one full day in Stockholm, December 28th. I'd like to do a day trip to Gripsholms Slott (myself and my 17 year old son). I can't figure out how to get there or if it will even be open or an English tour available. Is there a tour company that will pick us up at our hotel (Lady Collector Hamilton in the old town) and take us to Gripsholms Slott and the surrounding town for the day. I'd like an English speaking tour as well. Any suggestions??? Thanks so much for your help. I apologize if this has been asked before, but with 51 pages, I couldn't go through the whole thread. Desdichado62 Posted December 12, 2014 #1877 Share Posted December 12, 2014 Hey Lori, unfortunately Gripsholm's Castle is not open during the winter. Desdichado62 Posted December 13, 2014 #1879 Share Posted December 13, 2014 Thank you. I was afraid of that. Do you have any other suggestions for a full day in Stockholm or the surrounding areas? There are several things you can do a winter day in Stockholm. I do really recommend the Vasa museum, it is open from 10-15 every day in the winter except December 23-25 as well as January 1st. Other museums well worth a visit are Nordic museum located next door to Vasa. http://www.nordiskamuseet.se/en Historiska museet (Historical museum) is located a few blocks north of Vasa/Nordiska museet. http://www.historiska.se/misc/menyer-och-funktioner/menyer/globala-menyn/inenglish/ basically you could say that the Historical (H) and Nordic (N) museums are the same kind if museums but for different time periods. H is pre Gustav Vasa era and N is from Gustav Vasa era and to present time. Then both Gamla Stan and Skansen are nice but it depends allot on the weather since they are outdoor activities. Skansen are open from 10-16 on the 28th. Have in mind though that it will be dark by 15.00 already in this time of the year. ------- The local public transport company in Stockholm called SL (AB Storstockholms Lokaltrafik) have released a new app for smartphones/surpads. The app allows you to connect your bank/debit/credit card to it so that you can buy bus tickets from it where ever you are and when ever you are there. This is especially useful for tourists which longer have the need to try and locate ticket vendors. It is called SL Tickets (or SL-biljetter) By AB Storstockholms Lokaltrafik on Appstore and Google play. It is still very new and I have not tried it so I don't know if it works good or not good. Desdichado62 Posted January 7, 2015 #1881 Share Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) Hi, all these answers are a wonderful help. A question or two from me: Is the Grand Hotel still the best in town and what is the best place to by Vodka before we board our ship. Thanks in advance. :):) To my knowledge the GH is still the most luxurious hotel in Stockholm, if it is the best or not, I don't know. As for Vodka, your only option is Systembolaget, they are the only store allowed to sell alcoholic beverages that have an alcohol level that is greater then 3.5%. Click the link below and go to page 3-4 to see locations of Systembolag in central Stockholm. http://www.systembolaget.se/Butik--Ombud/?searchquery=Stockholm&hitsoffset=0&page=1&ny=True Edited January 7, 2015 by Desdichado62
phx aztraveler Posted January 9, 2015 #1882 Share Posted January 9, 2015 First thank you for all this wonderful advice. It is very generous of you to respond to all these inquiries. We will be in Stockholm in July for what seems to be a very short stop off the Celebrity Silhouette. Given that the time there will be so limited, what is the most efficient way to get around the city? We are interested in the Vasa, Nobel, Abba museums and maybe a stop at the icebar. I was thinking about the HoHo bus/boat pass, but became alarmed when an earlier poster mentioned how long it may take to get places because of the one-way route. What do you suggest? Desdichado62 Posted January 9, 2015 #1883 Share Posted January 9, 2015 (edited) The fastest way is of course taxi but that would be very expensive. Your ship will dock at Stadsgårdskajen which means that you can go with the HoHo boats (just buy a single stop ticket) directly from your ships berth to Vasa. Then if you want to visit Abba, head there directly after Vasa. However you are advised to pre-book tickets for Abba otherwise you might not be able to enter the museum. From Vasa to Abba is just a short walk: https://www.google.se/maps/dir/59.3277562,18.0921809/Abba+The+Museum/@59.3255561,18.0957915,585m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m14!4m13!1m5!3m4!1m2!1d18.0939641!2d59.3268553!3s0x465f9d54f161fa21:0xef5fcc3db2c04276!1m5!1m1!1s0x0:0x4a15f07835978e47!2m2!1d18.096471!2d59.324943!3e2 From Abba to Nobelmuseum, you have several options. 1. Tram #7 from Abba to Kungsträdgården where you change to bus #55 towards Sofia, get off at Slottsbacken. 2. Tram #7 from Abba to Nybroplan where you change to bus #76 towards Norra Hammarbyhamnen, get off at Slottsbacken. 3. Harbour ferry (Djurgårdsfärjan) from Abba/Allmänna Gränd to Räntmästartrappan and walk from there to Nobel Museum. https://www.google.se/maps/dir/Stockholm+Liljevalc+Gr%C3%B6na+Lund/59.3251307,18.0708495/@59.3216423,18.0801479,1170m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m14!4m13!1m10!1m1!1s0x465f82aad577b649:0x3c931efeb6da16be!2m2!1d18.097138!2d59.325248!3m4!1m2!1d18.0860569!2d59.3211136!3s0x465f77fc2cca4e29:0x482c41eea6e4980d!1m0!3e2 For option 1 and 2 use either of these pages to search for connections (or use google maps): http://reseplanerare.resrobot.se/bin/help.exe/en?L=vs_resrobot&tpl=webapp#!AA=1@O=Stockholm%20Liljevalc%20Gr%C3%B6na%20Lund@l=Gr%C3%B6na%20Lund@X=18097137@Y=59325245@U=80@L=007418282@B=1@V=74.9,@p=1420764061@!BA=1@O=Slottsbacken%20%28Stockholm%20kn%29@l=Slottsbacken@X=18074898@Y=59326135@U=80@L=007446002@B=1@V=74.9,@p=1420764061@!C20150109!Sschedule!T114100 http://sl.se/en/ From: Liljevalc Gröna Lund To: Slottsbacken https://www.google.se/maps/dir/Slottsbacken/59.3251307,18.0708495/@59.3256188,18.0725858,585m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m9!4m8!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d580ddc5e99:0x28ae90c60a10e94f!2m2!1d18.0749!2d59.32614!1m0!3e2 See these pages for info on harbour ferries; http://www.waxholmsbolaget.se/visitor/djurgarden-ferry/maps-ferry-terminals/ https://www.google.se/maps/dir/Abba+The+Museum,+Djurg%C3%A5rdsv%C3%A4gen,+Stockholm/59.3251307,18.0708495/@59.3234439,18.0831746,1170m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m14!4m13!1m10!1m1!1s0x465f82aad341ff05:0x4a15f07835978e47!2m2!1d18.096471!2d59.324943!3m4!1m2!1d18.0910449!2d59.3235658!3s0x465f77ffd6b746ff:0xb5246f7e264c4c7!1m0!3e2 Also be aware that buses and trams does not accept cash nor do they sell tickets on-board the buses/trams so tickets have to be bought in advance or by using the app I posted info about a few pages back. Desdichado62 Posted January 14, 2015 #1884 Share Posted January 14, 2015 Visit Stockholm District guide: Gamla Stan / The Old Town Gamla Stan is like a living, pedestrian-friendly museum, filled with sights, restaurants, cafés, bars and places to shop. The narrow, winding cobblestone streets, with their buildings in different colors, give Gamla Stan its unique character. Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan are the district’s main streets, but head off the beaten track to get the true feel of the island. There are several beautiful museums and attractions here, for example the Royal Palace. Lately Gamla Stan has become a virtual gastro-island when a number of new and excellent restaurants have opened their doors to the public. http://www.visitstockholm.com/en/See--do/Guides/Gamla-Stan--The-Old-Town/?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=Post&utm_campaign=Social%20Media

It seems like Nynashamn does not have much attraction and majority of visitors would travel to Stockholm. This would be our very first Europe Cruise, any suggestion on transportation and things to do? Thank you in advance! Rare QuattroRomeo Posted January 17, 2015 #1889 Share Posted January 17, 2015 Hi Desdichado, thanks for so many informative links about Stockholm! We will visit in September, on a Sunday, and would appreciate your thoughts. We are docked from 8-4. According to the port schedule, we are supposed to dock at Stadsgarden. Our potential sights for the day: - following the Nobel route: Stockholm Concert Hall on Hotorget, City Hall, Nobel Museum - try a sandwich at Nystekt Strommingvagnen ( Sodermalm Square) - shop at a Bjorn Borg store - visit Moderna Museet - do one of the boat/canal tours around town I doubt we have time for all of this, in order to return to the ship between 3-330. Part of the problem we have planning this, is that none of the sights seem to be open before 10. What order would you suggest that we do things, and what mode(s) of transportation would be the most time-efficient? Thank you for any suggestions! Desdichado62 Posted January 17, 2015 #1890 Share Posted January 17, 2015 @Helenalee You should have two options for transport into Stockholm. Either SL commuter train from Nynäshamn station to Stockholm Centralstation. https://www.google.se/maps/dir/Nyn%C3%A4shamn+station/Stockholm+Centralstation,+Stockholm/@59.2188953,17.5183926,10z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f5e9d044dee71:0x80ba3200174b72ca!2m2!1d17.951332!2d58.901135!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d607ae53315:0xf0c2b42fbbc0ce32!2m2!1d18.058298!2d59.330297!3e3 You will have to buy tickets before you board the train, I don't think the station in Nynäshamn is manned but there are tickets machine on the station as well as a kiosk nearby the station that sells tickets. You can also buy tickets via the official SL ticket app which I mentioned a few pages back. The other transport option would be the ship's shuttles which I assume will be available. You will need to check that with your cruise line though as well as where the shuttles drops you off in Stockholm. Regardless of method of transport, expect it to take around 45 minutes atleast. I would recommend you to buy a 24 hour travel pass since it would be cheaper then buying individual tickets. use google maps and http://sl.se/en/ to find transport connections. Basically from ship to Stadshuset bus, stadshuset to Björn Borg bus, Björn Borg to concert hall walk, concert hall to Nobel Museum subway+walk, Nobel museum to Södermalmstorg walk, Södermalmstorg to Moderna museet harbour ferries (Djurgårdsfärjan) http://www.waxholmsbolaget.se/visitor/djurgarden-ferry/maps-ferry-terminals/, use same to get back to Slussen from where you can take a bus back to the ship. You might be able to buy travel card at the tourist kiosk at Stadsgården but I am not sure. Possible the stockholm card could be of use but it is quite expensive and it's not certain that you can use the entire cost, especially since it is not valid for the harbour ferries, http://www.visitstockholm.com/sv/stockholmskortet/?gclid=CPT_19_mmsMCFcsLcwodak8AKA Edited January 17, 2015 by Desdichado62

brauchtj Posted January 19, 2015 #1893 Share Posted January 19, 2015 There will be a chat tonight in Twitter for those who want to have or give advice about Stockholm. Hi Desdichado62, hope you're still available for some advice! You have been extremely helpful. Our trip will be unforgettable with your suggestions! I was wondering about the fotboll (soccer) games in Stockholm. It doesn't seem like the schedules are up for 2015 yet, do you know around the time they typically get posted? It looks like the season starts in April. I went onto the team websites and you can only purchase season tickets right now. Do you know if we will be able to buy single tickets? We will be there between April 16-22. I hope one of the 3 teams will be in Stockholm during that time. Have you ever been to one of the soccer games? Thanks for your help!! Desdichado62 Posted January 21, 2015 #1897 Share Posted January 21, 2015 Boat tours: either of Historic or under bridges will be fine. Especially since you will do Djurgården on your own later. Transport from airport to hotel: A taxi would cost a little over 60 US dollars, the airport express train would cost about half compared to taxi according to current price list. Add about 15 dollars if you want to take taxi from the railway station to the hotel. As for Vaxholm, Strömmas classic ships does not have trips to Vaxholm on weekdays in May. The Cinderella boats will probably have connections but no timetable is available at the moment. However, Waxholmsbolaget WILL have connections but the time table for May is not available yet These boats are not bookable. You just show up 15-20 min before the boat leaves. Tickets are usually bought on-board and the ticket price is 50 SEK one way for you (reduced price), Cinderella boats website: http://www.stromma.se/en/Skargard/Cinderella-Boats/ Waxholmsbolaget website; http://www.waxholmsbolaget.com/visitor/resa/resmal/vaxholm/ For the return trip, no time table are available yet. Schedule have been released now: http://svenskfotboll.se/allsvenskan/spelprogram/ There is one game in Stockholm during your stay: http://svenskfotboll.se/allsvenskan/match/?scr=result&fmid=2939005 Easiest way of getting there is to take the subway Green line #19 (towards Hagsätra) to Globen subway-station. Find departure times at: http://sl.se/en/ Thanks so much for your help! :) this thread had been super informative! And I've only read a few pages. Not sure I'll get to read all 95! There are allot of useful information even if allot of it also is repeats of older question, or information that no longer is valid.
Desdichado62 Posted January 21, 2015 #1899 Share Posted January 21, 2015 Forgot to say that regarding the football schedule the home team is listed first. So for 2015-04-19 Djurgården - Kalmar FF is the home team.
