Thanks for this very helpful thread. Can you recommend a nice restaurant with authentic Sweedish food that is open on sunday for lunch? Thanks so much!

Well I think it depends on your budget and I'm not that familiar with restaurants in Stockholm.

Here are some advice. http://whatsupsthlm.se/restaurang/har-hittar-du-stockholms-basta-husmanskost/10523/

You can find more if you search for restaurants in the thread.

Aloha from Hawaii. We will visit Stockholm on the Royal Princess. The ship goes to Nynashamn and we'll take the cruiseline's bus to Stockholm to visit on our own. They drop us off in the city center where our Swedish relatives will meet us. Do you know where exactly the drop off point is? Address? I apologize if this question has already been asked and answered. Thank you for all the information you provide.

I am not 100% certain but I think it is at the Royal Theatre aka Royal Swedish Opera which is located at Gustaf Adolfs torg.

Just don't confuse it with the Royal Dramatic Theatre aka Dramaten which is located at Nybroplan.

Sjöhistoriska museet in Stockholm will have a Viking event this weekend.

In focus are several Viking and medieval ship replicas.

It is located between Djurgårdsbrunnsviken and Djurgårdsbrunnsvägen.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Sj%C3%B6historiska/@59.332489,18.115621,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!1m3!3m2!1s0x465f82b1c234340f:0x91ed3efa45b87158!2sSj%C3%B6historiska!3m1!1s0x465f82b1c234340f:0x91ed3efa45b87158

The event will take place at the museum's lawn in front of the museum.

Bus 69K will get you there, get off at Museiparken stop.

Just for knowledge (to avoid confusion), it seems that Scandic hotels have bought Rica Hotels and all Rica Hotels have now been renamed to Scandic XYZ instead of Rica Hotel XYZ.

Apparently this happened in February already but I didn't know about until now.

Starting in September, there will be a new sightseeing operator in Stockholm.

The sightseeing operator calls themselves "Ocean bus" and their sightseeing tours will be made with an amphibious bus both on land and on the water.

They will have a guide on-board the bus rather then the pre-recorded audio most other operators use.

http://www.alltomstockholm.se/stadsliv/article4110316.aos

The tour originates from "Blå Porten" which is next to the Abba museum and within walking distance from the Vasa Museum.

Global Street Style Report: Mapping Out the 15 Coolest Neighborhoods in the World

http://www.vogue.com/slideshow/1080625/fifteen-coolest-street-style-neighborhoods/

3 / 15

SÖDERMALM / STOCKHOLM / SWEDEN

In this day and age, “Cool” and “Stockholm” are essentially synonymous. Think: Acne Studios, long-lit summer nights, minimalistic armchairs.

Imagine, then, how hip its coolest neighborhood must be.Enter Södermalm, an island just to the south of the city’s center, where one can find

top-notch vintage boutiques like Grandpa (which also sells Swedish labels including Rodebjer and Dagmar) to a comprehensive 'zine shop,

cheekily named Papercut. Young parents: be sure to stop by the buzzy Mini Rodini outpost on Nytorgsgatan, famed for its funky children’s wear.

The Vasa museum have been named the 13th best museum and The state Hermitage in SPB was awarded second best museum in the world by Tripadvisors members.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/TravelersChoice-Attractions-cMuseums-g1

Also we have a new government in Sweden which was presented today.

They have announced that their intention is to have free entrance to State museums.

However no more details are available and the last time we had this an exemption was made for the Vasa museum.

I assume this is because the high costs of preserving the Vasa ship and the high costs for running the museum in general.

Stockholm ports have published the list of vessel calls for next year.

http://www.portsofstockholm.com/Map/Vessel-traffic/

Select port: Stockholm:

Vessel type: un-check all except cruise ships

Then change "in port" to expected in port.

For map of the various docking locations see this post: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=42545392&highlight=stockholmshamnar#post42545392

*edit the links to the Stockholm port website seems to be dead. SO use this one instead: http://www.stockholmshamnar.se/hamnkarta/

Recommendations for things to do:

These two are a must:

Vasamuseum

Gamla Stan

---

Then see the Royal Palace.

-----

Perhaps use one day to explore Djurgården Island?

----

Vaxholm with the fortress. Get to Vaxholm by bus or boat.

However no schedules are available for spring yet and it won't be for another 4-5 months.

Then you have in the post above yours a list of museums with free entrance.

I think you should get a travel card and use buses and trams to get around rather then HoHo boats/buses. A 72-hour travel card costs 230 SEK / person (approx $31 USD).

It is valid on buses and trams and subways. The travel card is also valid on Djurgårdsfärjan.

Thanks so much for your rapid reply. I am 74 and Stockholm is a place my husband and I have so wanted to see. I am retired nurse and hubby 78 retired also.but we are in good health. An this our 2nd and last trip to Europe--We did Med last year and saw so much.

We have been trying hard to fine a hotel that is in good location for sight seeing for 3 days and staying around $200 per day. I we will be there May 25th till we board ship on 28th and depart 29th so we actually have almost 4 days. I am having hard time finding the right area for hotel stay and they are filling up fast. We do want to store our luggage before check in.

Central Hotel---this is my 1st choice what do you think

Elite Eden Park Hotel

Hotel Riddargatan

Residence Perseus

Scandic Klara sounded good till found bedbugs in reviews

Once I get a hotel then I have few more questions---Thank you thank you!

We don't need AC in May do we? We live in Phoenix Arizona and some what used to heat.

I have no personal experience from either of those hotels but reviews look good for Central Hotel so I say go for it if it is your first choice.

It is not that far to walk to main areas of interest, except Vasa/Djurgården but they are easily reached by bus/tram.

I also agree that no AC will be needed.

Hi Desdichado62, our ship will be docked on F638 Frihamnen and we want to go to the Ice Bar, what would be the best way to get there? Any info you can give me about the Ice Bar, I plan on buying the tickets online, but anything in particular to be noted? Also, will the palace be crowded, are we better off going there early or late in the day? BTW, we are on the same ship as jmmcurdy and will be doing several tours together, though not in Stockholm. Thanks, this is a wonderful thread:)

I don't know much about the ice bar but perhaps other cruisers who have been there can give you their impressions.

The easiest way to get there is by going with blue bus #1 from Frihamnen stop to Cityterminalen and walk from there.

Hi It's Me Again!

I really appreciate all your help and input!!! Thank you so much.

Prior to arrival should I purchase online the bus ticket for 3 days-if so who from?

Prior to arrival purchase tickets to Vasa and Norkiska Museums

Anything else I should purchase prior to arrival?

Is this worthwhile day trip? Stockholm to Uppsala by Train

What time does is sunrise and sunset by end of May

What is temperature like?

What type clothes do we need --how jeans and sweatshirts?

May 25th Monday we arrive at 12n and need to stay awake and get internal clock

would you suggest we settle in hotel and spend the afternoon doing the Stockholm Canals or the HoHo tour then finding a place close to our hotel for dinner

May 26th Tuesday be at Vasa at 8:30 then to Gamla Stan or the Royal Palace

May 27th Wed

Djurgarden

Stockholm City Hall

Millesgarden

Royal Palace

Is there a day trip that you think would be worthwhile? Arriving in several days before everyone else who is cruising let's us miss the crowds in the most popular places I hope.

Any suggestions for good Swedish Restaurants that are family oriented in food and price?

What am I missing or am I going to be lucky to see all of this from were Central Hotel

address is Vasagatan 38, 11120 Stockholm, Sweden –

What time does is sunrise and sunset by end of May?

May 25 2015: Sunrise at 3:53 am, sunset at 9:35 pm

May 27 2015: Sunrise at 3:50 am, sunset at 9:39 pm

Temperature for late May is TOTALLY unpredictable.

Prior to arrival purchase tickets to Vasa and Nordiska Museums

As far as I know it is not possible to buy advance tickets for Vasa.

We who live in Stockholm tend to consider the Ice Bar as just a tourist trap. It has nothing to do with Stockholm and in my mind it has just been placed inside an hotel so that tour buses have a place to drop there passengers for a while. The real ice bar is in the famous Icehotel in Jukkasjarvi in northern Sweden. This hotel, built each winter with ice and snow has all the atmosphere and surroundings that are impossible to copy inside a hotel in the city.

http://www.icehotel.com/about-icehotel/

The time of day when it is most crowded around the palace is in the middle of the day. Changing of the guards takes place at 12.15 on weekdays, 13.15 on Sundays, and I guess many take the opportunity to also visit the palace when they are there. In my mind the best thing to visit inside the palace is the Royal Armoury.

jmccurdy,

the closest place to buy tickets/travelcards is at either 7-eleven at Vasagatan 44.

https://www.google.se/maps/dir/Central+Hotel,+Vasagatan+38,+111+20+Stockholm/Vasagatan+44,+111+20+Stockholm/@59.3332518,18.0567232,146m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d60c4973239:0xea2960f0c504cb8f!2m2!1d18.057514!2d59.33292!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d60d674da5b:0x97f86a5dbd634d51!2m2!1d18.0568854!2d59.3336507

or at SL-center at the lower floor of Stockholm central station.

https://www.google.se/maps/dir/Central+Hotel,+Vasagatan+38,+111+20+Stockholm/%27%27/@59.3316643,18.0552214,17z/data=!3m2!4b1!5s0x465f9d608f6febb5:0x6c1168e3a0245cb8!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d60c4973239:0xea2960f0c504cb8f!2m2!1d18.057514!2d59.33292!1m5!1m1!1s0x0:0x1fccb2cb35ad693a!2m2!1d18.058039!2d59.330425!3e2

Regarding Uppsala I think Uppsala is ok but not a must or anything. There is the cathedral and also Gamla Uppsala,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uppsala_Cathedral

http://www.raa.se/upplev-kulturarvet/gamla-uppsala-museum/

http://www.tripadvisor.se/Attraction_Review-g189871-d247263-Reviews-Gamla_Uppsala-Uppsala_Uppsala_County.html

http://www.tripadvisor.se/Attractions-g189871-Activities-Uppsala_Uppsala_County.html

"What type clothes do we need --how jeans and sweatshirts?"

Jeans and sweatshirts will do just fine, probably bring a semi-warm jacket as well.

Personally I found the HoHo bus tours to be very poor quality in relation to the cost.

As for day trips, Drottningholm perhaps?

http://www.stromma.se/en/Stockholm/The-Archipelago/Day-trips/Drottningholm-Palace/

http://www.stromma.se/en/Stockholm/The-Archipelago/Day-trips/

Blidösundsbolaget also have daytrips: http://www.blidosundsbolaget.se/dagsutflykter/

If you prefer land-based trips, Mariefred is not far away and reached by going with train/vintage train or train/bus

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariefred

Things to see in Mariefred is the town itself as well as:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g189866-d736162-Reviews-Gripsholm_Castle-Sodermanland_County_Swedish_Lakeland.html

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1187898-d2190245-Reviews-Ostra_Sodermanlands_Jarnvag-Mariefred_Sodermanland_County_Swedish_Lakeland.html

I would do Vasa+Djurgården together and then Gamla Stan+Royal Palace+City Hall together due to their proximate location.

Vasa is located at Djurgården so it would be natural to Djurgården at the same time so you don't have to spend so much time going to and from each thing.

Vasa: https://www.google.se/maps/place/Vasamuseet/@59.3264141,18.1014277,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x465f9d546d8329af:0xcff09af1b4c13241

Gamla Stan/Royal Palace/ City Hall.

I would start with the city hall in the morning then walk to the Royal Palace and it's museums and then you can spend as much time as you want strolling around Gamla Stan.

https://www.google.se/maps/dir/Central+Hotel,+Vasagatan+38,+111+20+Stockholm/Stockholms+stadshus,+Hantverkargatan+1,+111+52+Stockholm/Kungliga+slottet,+111+30+Stockholm/Gamla+stan,+S%C3%B6dermalm,+Stockholm/@59.3301835,18.0632061,15z/am=t/data=!4m26!4m25!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d60c4973239:0xea2960f0c504cb8f!2m2!1d18.057514!2d59.33292!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f77df9092cde9:0xaeafc90d911394c0!2m2!1d18.054346!2d59.327451!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d587e4c4a01:0xbdf97a9648763e36!2m2!1d18.071719!2d59.326822!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f77e2669ff92b:0x2600fef435168b11!2m2!1d18.0718675!2d59.3256954!3e2

As for restaurants, I don't have ant advice to give really. Mots restaurants in Stockholm are very expensive. However you can have a look at the websites below and browse for Stockholm restaurants.

Desdichado62,

You been such a great help---how does this schedule sound to you

Mon May 25th arrive Stockholm at 11 am----train to Central Hotel and check in

I think by 3:30 PM we would be checked in hotel and ready to so something

Thinking of canal tour ( not sure which one) but 2 hrs to get overview Stockholm

Vaxholm | Stromma.se

http://www.stromma.se/en/Stockholm offer 3 tours

Under Bridge, 2 hrs

Royal Grand Tour 1 hr

Historical Stockholm tour 1 hr

Which tour do you suggest that will give us best overview of Stockholm?

After the boat tour we would be ready to get dinner and back to Central Hotel

I think this would keep us awake and doing something till bed time.

Tues May 26th

Start early go 1st to City Hall, walk to Royal Palace for see changing of

guards then on to Gamla Stan

Wed May 27th at 8:30 am Vase and Djurgarden

Thurs May 28th we leave Central Hotel and check into Cruise Ship Celebrity Silhouette

I am hoping we can take one train to the ship versus a taxi with luggage

After checking into cruise ship at 11 am we woul like

to do the boat to Stockholm Vaxholm ( using same boat vendor) and taking bus

bus back from Vaxholm to Stockholm. Can I get a boat at 3 pm

Do you have any idea what time this boat trip starts and how I get from cruise ship

were the boat to Vaxholm departs and were the bus returns to

On return to Stockholm by bus I have TO FIND OUR WAY BACK TO SHIP no luggage

Ship is docked at F638 Frihamnen

May 29th the ship sails so in afternoon but we will stay on board while others are tourin

Does this sound reasonable as far as location to our Cental Hotel at Vasagatan 38, 11120

Stockholm

Will our 3 day ticket cover the boat canal tour and trip to Vaxholm and back to

Stockholm?

I know I need to buy the VASA museum tickets when we arrive

I can purchase by March or April the 3 day ticket, correct?

I need to make reservations for

The canal tour right when times are posted

The boat trip to Vaxholm when times are posted

Oh gosh I feel like I am such a pain asking you all these questions but really apppreciate your help so we can make the most of our time in Stockholm.

Thanks
