Mon May 25th, I don 't know which canal cruise is the best.

However I would guess that the under the bridges will give you a bigger overview of Stockholm.

Tues May 26th sounds good. You also probably will have time to explore some of the museums located in the royal palace.

Like the Royal armoury which have free entrance: http://livrustkammaren.se/en

Wed May 27th sounds good.

Thurs May 28th There is no train going to Frihamnen so you have to go by bus, subway+bus or taxi.

Either subway red line #13 from T-centralen (central station) to Ropsten and bus #76 towards Norra Hammarbyhamnen from Ropsten to Frihamnen.

By bus there are several options.

Best choice would be blue bus #1 from Cityterminalen to Frihamnen as this would not require any changes of bus along the route.

Search your connections on your own when you are getting closer to the cruise date at: http://sl.se/en/

From: Cityterminalen to: Frihamnen.

To get to Vaxholm by boat from frihamnen.

Either book a cruise at: http://www.stromma.se/en/Stockholm/The-Archipelago/Day-trips/Vaxholm/

Or go with public transport:

bus #76, towards Norra Hammarbyhamnen, from Frihamnen to Karls XII:s torg.

https://www.google.se/maps/dir/Stockholm+Karl+XII:s+torg/Stockholm+Str%C3%B6mkajen/@59.3295075,18.07239,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d590bf43f89:0x491a7a6bb03fe477!2m2!1d18.073862!2d59.329822!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d59baa32841:0x7d345217af47e90c!2m2!1d18.075437!2d59.329193

Then go with Waxholmsbolaget to Vaxholm or Kastellet (Vaxholm).

I can't tell you which boat you should go with and when it departs since the spring schedule won't be available until March-April or sometime.

Like with buses you can search connections or your own at: http://www.waxholmsbolaget.se/visitor/archipelago-traffic/journey-planner/

To: Kastellet,if you want to go directly to Waxholm fortress or Vaxholm (Stockholm) if you just want to go to Vaxholm town.

Ticket price is currently 75kr per person for a one way ticket.

You buy tickets onboard the boat.

For the return trip choose To: Frihamnen, From: Vaxholm (Stockholm) or Kastellet.

Make sure that the return trip goes via Vaxholm and includes bus from Vaxholm f you want to go by bus all the way back.

The SL travel card is not valid on the canal tours or Vaxholmsbolaget's regular boats.

It is however valid on Djurgårdsfärjan and for the bus trip back from Waxholm.

As for the travel card, it seems it is not possible to but it in advance but

there are several nearby places where you can buy one.

Tickets to Vasamuseum are not possible to buy in advance, you can only pay when you enter the museum.

Reservations for the canal tours can be made here: http://www.stromma.se/en/Stockholm/Sightseeing/Sightseeing-by-boat/

Waxholmsbolaget's boats do have reservation, you just show up and board to boat prior to departure and take any available seat.

Waxholmsbolaget is a regular public transport company which boats works the same way as the regular buses do on land.

Hello,

Our ship is at Stockholm on a Sunday so I understand that bus #26 is not running. We arrive at 9 and I understand that the HoHo buses do not begin until 10AM. We want to maximize our time. We would like to go to the Vasa museum, the Gamla Stan and the Ice Bar, if possible. But the ship leaves at 4 so we don't have much time. Thank you for your help!

Which ship & which date?

By bus #26 (which I am not familiar with) I presume that you mean bus #76?

Bus #76 does run on Sunday's but the first departure isn't until 09.06 (am),

Just go with it to Djurgårdsbron and walk to Vasa from there.

Hello,

We will be arriving on a Sunday and I understand the #76 begins at 9AM on Sunday's. Would you happen to know what time it would be at the stop for the Frihamner terminal?

Thank you very much.

I don't know yet since spring/summer schedules can be different then the current winter one.

Here is the winter schedule: http://sl.se/ficktid/vinter/v76.pdf the relevant part is:

Ropsten–Norra Hammarbyhamnen - Söndag och helgdag

The bus origins from Ropsten and reaches Frihamnen about 8min later.

  • 3 weeks later...

Do you think buying a Stockholm Card for our 3 day stay before the cruise in May will save us money? We are staying at Central Hotel in Stockholm close to Central station-at least that is what I have booked so far--with hopes price will go down in few months.

With you previous help this is what I put together for our 3 days stay before we board the ship:

Mon May 25th arrive Stockholm at 11 am----train to Central Hotel and check in

I think by 3:30 PM we would be checked in hotel and ready to so something

Thinking of canal tour ( not sure which one) but 2 hrs to get overview Stockholm

http://www.stromma.se/en/Stockholm offer 3 tours

Under Bridge, 2 hrs

Royal Grand Tour 1 hr

Historical Stockholm tour 1 hr

The Under The Bridge Tour is suggest that will give us best overview of Stockholm?

After the boat tour we would be ready to get dinner and back to Central Hotel

I think this would keep us awake and doing something till bed time.

Tues May 26th because our Hotel is walking distance

Start early go 1st to City Hall, walk to Royal Palace for see changing of

guards see other museums in area, then on to Gamla Stan were we we can spend much time as we want

Wed May 27th at 8:30 am Vase and Djurgarden

Thurs May 28th we leave Central Hotel and check into Cruise Ship Celebrity Silhouette

I am we can take one train to the ship---

After checking into cruise ship at 11 am we would like leave the ship and

do the boat to Stockholm Vaxholm ( using same boat vendor) and taking bus

bus back from Vaxholm to Stockholm. Can get a boat at 2 pm one hr to Vaxholm

Tour Vaxhol and do the bus back just for different scenery back to Stockholm

Do you have any idea what time this boat trip starts and how I get from cruise ship

were the boat to Vaxholm departs and were the bus returns to

On return to Stockholm by bus I have TO FIND OUR WAY BACK TO SHIP no luggage

Ship is docked at F638 Frihamnen

May 29th the ship sails so in afternoon but we will stay on board while others are tourin

Our Cenrtal Hotel at Vasagatan 38, 11120 Stockholm

Our 3 day ticket will not cover the boat canal tour or Trip to Vaxholm and back to Stockholm? I can book online when tours posted probably around March

Will buy the VASA museum tickets when we enter-they don't sell sooner

I need will make reservations for Under the Bridges canal tour right when times are posted

The boat trip to Vaxholm when times are posted

Strömma's Vaxholm cruises departs from central Stockholm at 12.00 but there doesn't seem to be any cruises on the May 26th-30th.

Or at least there wasn't this year.

You could always email them and ask; http://www.stromma.se/TopTopMenu/Kundservice/

However Vaxholmsbolaget will get you there as well (no booking required) but there time schedules for may are not available yet but will be available sometime in March.

http://www.waxholmsbolaget.se/

Like with Strömma, you could send email and ask.

During this summers there was a steam ship called Storskär that left Strömkajen (central Stockholm) at 12.00 or 14.15 and arrived at Vaxholm at 15.30

However Waxholms fortress if open at all in May, closes at 16.00 already but the stores and possible sights in Vaxholm city should be open.

http://www.upplevvaxholm.se/

Again send and email and ask them. http://www.vaxholmsfastning.se/*****%20oss/

Regarding the Stockholm card, I don't think you should get one since not that many things are included in it and you probably won't be using the cards full value.

Neither of the boat trips are included in the Stockholm card. So go with the travel card that I mentioned before instead.

We will be in Stockholm on Monday May 11 on Celebrity Silhouette. We are planning to take the Ho-Ho boat from Stadsgarden to Gamla Stan, walk through the old town area (Any must see sights?) to Slusson locks, find the Ho-ho boat again and take back to Gamla Stan to see the Royal Palace, rejoin the Ho-Ho boat and ride back completing the boat tour to Stadsgarden.

The reason for the doubling back to the Royal Palace is that it doesnt open until 11am so we are going to use Rick Steves self-guided walk through Gamla Stan first.

I know the ho-ho boat accepts credit cards and US$ as well as Euros.

Does the Royal palace also accept credit cards or Euros?

I dont think we will have time to do much else since we are only in port 9am to 4pm.

Herban, I'd take the HoHo boat directly to Vasa museum.

After you have have been to Vasa, take Djurgårdsfärjan to Räntmästartrappan at Slussen quay and walk through Gamla Stan up to the Royal Palace which is at the northern end.

Royal Palace with definitely accept credit cards but I don't think they accept Euros. However you can buy your ticket online just before you leave for your cruise.

Vasa is definitely a must seem as for Gamla Stan here is a small map

I am arriving at the airport on Saturday around 12.

I will be staying at the Sheridan, which I believe the train station is very close. What would I take at the airport to get to this hotel? I thought I should buy the pass for three days. I was going to take a wakling tour of Gamla Stan, eat and bed. Sunday I can get on my ship but I thought I would do Vasa Museum first - I am guessing take a train there or do you suggest walking over to Nybroplan and taking a boat. Then I would head back to the hotel and to the port - not sure how to do that yet .

The next day I thought I would head over to City Hall maybe walk a little more in Gamla Stan.

Any suggestions? I leave that day around 4. Also you probably have addressed transportation issues many times and I thank you.

I assume your Hotel is the Sheraton and Sheridan?

The Sheraton is indeed very close to Stockholm central station, around 600m from where the Airport express train stops.

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/59.3325099,18.0560417/Sheraton+Stockholm/@59.3313398,18.0546522,17z/data=!3m1!5s0x465f9d606478b71f:0x6c1168e3223d84bb!4m14!4m13!1m5!3m4!1m2!1d18.0581298!2d59.3317782!3s0x465f9d60934c6bd7:0xf2edbcc4f9bd572e!1m5!1m1!1s0x0:0x48f87179ae6b63db!2m2!1d18.061712!2d59.328944!3e2

https://www.arlandaexpress.com/stockholmcitymap.aspx

Transportation from airport to central Stockholm depends on your budget/preferences.

You have several choices though, such as airport express train, airport coaches, taxi...

I don't for sure but I would assume that the express train is the fastest way.

https://www.arlandaexpress.com/

http://flygbussarna.se/en

http://www.taxistockholm.se/en/

http://www.taxikurir.se/

Then getting from the hotel to Vasa. Boat vs. tram. Why not use one method of transportation for the trip to Vasa and then use the other method for the return trip?

For sea transport either travel with the lovely Harbour ferry M/S Emelie from Ressel Rederi. (no cash payment).

http://www.ressel.se/

You can also go with the sightseeing boats:

http://www.stromma.se/en/Stockholm/Sightseeing/Sightseeing-by-boat/hop-on-hop-off-boat/

http://www.redsightseeing.com/hop-on-hop-off-boat-stockholm/

The harbour ferry goes in both directions from/to Nybroplan/Allmänna Gränd (Djurgården/Vasa).

As for suggestions, if you want to see something rather unusual, perhaps the Hallwylska could be of interest? http://hallwylskamuseet.se/en

A museum that once actually was a real residence for Mr and Mrs. von Hallwyl and which have been preserved as it looked like when they lived in the palace.

Also I need to know what ship you are going on which date it departs.

From hotel to port (Frihamne F638), you have three options:

1. Walk to T-centralen (subway central station) which is located at the same place as the central station.

Then subway red line 13 to Ropsten from where you go with bus #76 towards Norra Hammarbyhamnen, get off at Frihamnen.

https://www.google.se/maps/dir/Hotell+Sheraton+i+Stockholm,+Tegelbacken+6,+101+23+Stockholm/Frihamnen,+Liding%C3%B6/@59.3429474,18.0769401,14z/data=!4m19!4m18!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d5fbd8a2865:0x48f87179ae6b63db!2m2!1d18.061712!2d59.328944!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f82c897e306cf:0xe92df97c10953b3a!2m2!1d18.131305!2d59.345683!2m3!6e4!7e2!8j1418133900!3e3!5i6?hl=sv

2. Bus #62, towards Storängsbotten, from Tegelbacken to Kungsträdgården (kungsträdgårdsgatan) where you switch to bus #76 towards Ropsten, get off at Frihamnen.

https://www.google.se/maps/dir/Hotell+Sheraton+i+Stockholm,+Tegelbacken+6,+101+23+Stockholm/Frihamnen,+Liding%C3%B6/@59.3322946,18.0856666,15z/data=!4m18!4m17!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d5fbd8a2865:0x48f87179ae6b63db!2m2!1d18.061712!2d59.328944!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f82c897e306cf:0xe92df97c10953b3a!2m2!1d18.131305!2d59.345683!2m3!6e4!7e2!8j1418133900!3e3?hl=sv

3. Bus #62, towards Storängsbotten, from Tegelbacken to Nybroplan. From Nybroplan go with Sjövägen harbour ferries (see link in my previous post) to Frihamnen.

http://kartor.eniro.se/m/ix4D8

You can search your own connections at: http://sl.se/en/

but it seems it won't give you the boat option so you will have to find

your own connection.

Also the travel card you intend to buy is also valid on the Sjövägen ferries.

Thanks. So for the airport to hotel it seems Flygbussarna is the best but is by destination for Central Station - Cityterminalen the same?

On the travel card how much is a bus ride, subway ride and a ferry ride so I know how much to put on it. Do you do this at the airport.

I like the ferry ride for going to the ship but do you think the bus I will see more.

My budget is not bad but don't want to waste it on taxis rather use it for other items.

If you buy a regular 3-day travel card, it provides unlimited travel for three days at a fixed price of 230SEK which is about 30 US dollars.

You can but travel card at both the airport and when you arrive in Stockholm at Centralstation where SL have a big customer service/shop establishment called SL-center on the lower floor.;

Tunnelhallen-SL-biljetter: http://www.stationsinfo.se/station/stockholmcentral/stationc5f4.html

SL - Center

Öppettider

Mån - Fre 06.30 - 23.15

Lör 06.30- 23.15

Sön 07.00 - 23.15

http://www.sl.se

Also all mini-supermarkets called Pressbyrån, sells the SL-travel card. There are several located at Stockholm Centralstation and also one at Vasagatan between

Centralstation and your hotel. http://www.pressbyran.se/

Station to the left, cityterminal is further ahead behind the bridge, Pressbyrån to the right.

https://www.google.com/maps/@59.3297356,18.0601916,3a,74.2y,331.03h,79.13t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sRJkenaUX0zx7em9ru5vq-w!2e0

Cityterminal is the main bus terminal for non-local buses and is located just north of Centralstation.

As for bus vs. ferries. Ferries will allow you to see parts of Stockholm which you can't see from the bus. The same goes for the bus.

So I would suggest you try both. :)

A few words about the Stockholm travel card system.

When the current system with loadable cards (known as Access cards) were introduced in 2008 the cards themselves were free. That meant that people did not take care of their cards but lost them and asked for new ones again and again. So SL started to take 20 kronor for the cards. But that was very unfair for tourists, who for example, for a 24 hour ticket had to buy a 20 Kronor card which they would never use again. So nowadays there is a non-cost non-loadable card variant for 24 hours and 72 hours tickets. Like Desdichado62 I highly recommend to use those. A 24 hour ticket is 115 kr and a 72 hours 230 kr while a single trip is 36 kr I think. So a 24 hour ticket pay itself back after 3 trips and a 72 hour ticket after 6 trips.

Can anyone advise how to get from Stadsgarden to Skansen?

Pls advise the best/cheaper routes. Is it via Sjovagen or bus/tram?

Do the bus/tram allow luggages? We hv 1 large, 1 medium and 1 small as we're traveling with kids.

Need advice asap as we're flying off tonight and may not hv internet.

Which ship are you arriving with (either Viking Line's ship presumably)?

Sjövägen are too far from Stadsgården to be an option.

Either walk to Londonviadukten and go with bus #53 from there towards Roslagstull.

Get off at Stockholm central station.

Walk 500m to Sergelstorg/Hamngatan and board tram 7 towards Waldemarsudde, get off at Stockholm Liljevalc Gröna Lund

Londonviadukten:

The only thing I'm worried about is if you can buy bus-tickets where the ferries dock.

You need a ticket before you board the bus since you cannot buy a ticket onboard the buses/trams.

Also pack warm clothes, the weather is really horrible at the moment, cold, rainy and windy.
