Nasty Chair Hogs Exist!

STAM

On a recent cruise, aside from the poolside chair hogs we have all come to know and love, I encountered an entirely new breed of chair hog in the casino of all places.

Shortly before leaving port one afternoon, I observed a "gentleman" scattering all sorts of belongings (packs of cigarettes, lighters, anything small ...) across all 6 chairs of the video blackjack table ( the only 5 dollar table you'll find at night in the casino... ). Being slightly curious, I asked him what he was doing... and he replied that his 5 friends had all gone to the bathroom at the same time and he was saving their seats at the table for them for when the casino opened momentarily. Riiiiiiighhhhht!

As we sailed out and the casino opened, he sat there for 15 minutes (not even playing) and ferociously guarded the empty chairs. One by one as people walked up to the giant empty machine, he would jump up from his chair on the end and block them from sitting down... Finally one couple had enough of him and retrieved a casino host who instructed him to remove his extra belongings and allow others who were there to play to sit at the machine and do so. The man was not happy and stormed off ... apparently to complain to someone who could not care less.

The casino staff was pretty good about it... they would rather have people playing than have empty chairs being reserved for someone who was not present.

I did this once on my last cruise, just putting the beach towels in the used towel bin thus leaving the chairs free for other folks to use. However, I did not stick around to reap the nastiness that might have ensued upon their return! I do wonder how these folks got around the missing towel charge, but I'm sure they escaped it somehow... :D

I have noticed a trend lately for some folks not to use the ship's towels to save seats. These use their own terry lounge covers, shoes and books. Perhaps our little "campaign" is working - at least with respect to folks saving chairs with the ship towels - but they are just getting more ingenious!

Billie5... What ship were you on when you saw those terry lounge covers?

I thought I saw something similar.

But, would you object or mind if I was to "hog" a chaise lounge all day? That is, I'd be relaxing in the lounge all day long.

I think the accepted definition of a chair hog is someone who puts some token belonging, along with a towel on a chair at an early hour, leaves and never shows up to use the chair until hours later...not someone who

actually uses the cahir for a long period of time.

I guess no one cleared that up for you when you asked almost the same thing earlier.;)

I am on the Aug. 9th sailing out of NYC on the Dawn and I really hope the crew does the same thing to all the people who save chairs and then don't show up for an hour.:D

I witnessed two crew members "escorting" chair hogs belongings (not just towels) from chairs that were unoccupied for a long time.

I was not around for the aftermath, to see how they reacted when they found "their" chairs occupied and their belongings gone.

So if you encounter chair hogs on the Dawn--report them to the staff!:D

If anybody followed the rewiew of the "Dawn Queen's Suite Life. . ." a couple of mo. ago must remember the section about the casino machine hog woman. She NEVER left this certain machine & always played that machine. One night he saw her waddle off rather strangely and immediately jump into the chair. Only to immediately jump up because the seat was warm & wet. Evidently her adult diaper leaked or slipped.

So be forewarned about those casino chair hogs.

Trish

PS: Sorry I didn't do the story justice. It was hilarious. I was howling when I read it.

As others have said, I've come to enjoy the more quiet areas of cruise ships and don't fixate over being by the pool. I was on one ship a while back, early in the a.m. sitting on a top deck, drinking coffee. I watched with amusement all the people coming out with towels, magazines, books, flip flops, or whatever to put on chairs. Some of the chairs had cushions and people were feeling the cushions for the best ones, and then proceeded to change the cushions on some of the chairs in their group. What some people will do!

On a recent RCCL cruise however, they had deck patrol people who walked around and put pieces of tape with the time written on it in inconspicuous places. Then when they patrolled again, if the belongings were still there, they were removed so the chairs were freed up. That seemed to work pretty well.

Here"s a story from my RCCL days. I was on Radiance with my granddaughter who was 11. We went to the pool to swim with my scooter. My GD put her towel on my scooter seat while mine was in the basket. When I got out after about 30 mins, I was surprised to see a man seating in the seat. I asked him nicely to get out including please (I'm Canadian, I can't help but be polite). He refused to leave.

The Pool Attendent came by and I told him to get the guy off my scooter. He said that the guy said it was his scooter!!! He would not budget him.

I spotted the Hotel Dirctor and told him. He had seen with with the scooter many times. He walked up and told the guy to leave as I could prove it was my scooter. The guy then complained because he wanted to sit by his wife by the pool. The Pool Attendent then found an empty one and placed it beside his wife.

End of the story 5 mins later they left for lunch and another couple took their seats:eek:

I think the only way to control chair hogging is for a combined effort. People should report them to staff. Of course, the best way is for the liner to have a crew member checking out the chairs and making sure they are not hogged (does hogging and hogged exist ?)

If everyone took the time to write to NCL..like you take the time to post here, things could possibly change.

When I saw that RCCL had started enforcing the 'no chair saving rule', I immediately wrote to both CCL and NCL telling them what RCCL was doing, and suggested that it would be very nice if they'd do the same.

I got a phone call from an NCL rep in return. We spoke on the phone for about 20 minutes in regard to my letter. He agred that chair hogging is a big issue.

BUT I believe with all my heart that if enough people took the time to write to NCL and if they saw that enough people were bothered by the chair hoggers, that they might try to implement something like RCCL is doing (and that Celebrity has always done)...POOL POLICE ;)

Take 5 minutes and a stamp and just do it :)

Even in the most crowded situation, there are more available chairs on deck than there are people who occupy them.

You'll often see stacks of unused chairs. So why is there a problem? Because everyone wants to be close to the pool, or within sight of the "action". That is silly!

That's not always the case. On our last cruise, (Star) we were looking ALL OVER for a deck chair anywhere...even in the shade or at the back of the ship...anywhere!

We finally found a couple chairs and sat next to 6 empty chairs that sat empty for the 4 hours were remained there. We sadly watched dozens upon dozens of people walk by, obviously looking for a place to sit.
