What are the best areas to snorkel Labadee on your own?

Does RCCL make you wear snorkel vests? I was chastised by a guard at CoCo Cay before for not having one.

there is no good snorkeling at labadee on your own.. they now have an excursion.. I have heard good recent reports on the excursion

They say you have to have your vest on. We took ours off, while in plain sight of the officials....they said nothing.

We're bringing our own snorkel equipment, without vests. If RCI makes us wear vests, will they provide them? If required to wear one, I fully intend on taking it off. I'm a fatso, and have no trouble floating in saltwater.

I don't expect to find world class snorkeling at Labadee. It'll be more of a refresher outing for DW before we land at Grand Cayman. It looks like there may be some interesting stuff at the east end of the peninsula on the leeward side.

Can someone name some good snorkel places on the island. We don't need to rent gear because we already have some!

We were there last week and snorkeled on Barefoot Beach (the one halfway between the tender "dock" and the new pier). We entered the water and went to the right along the rocks. The snorkeling isn't that great, but we saw some fish. Visibility was about 10-15 feet. Hideaway beach looked better from Google Earth, but it is closed due to the construction of the pier. If you're an expert snorkler, you can try the north side of the peninsula... there's a lot of surge there.

RCI didn't make us wear vests.

The snorkle excursion was one of best I have been on. They took us out to a reef and we were escorted in the water by a guide while another man stayed with us in a kayak. I stayed in the water for over an hour since there was so much to see. The guide pointed out different species and we saw a baby octopus. On board there was a marine biologist to answer any questions we had. The owner of the boat, the captain and the biologist are all Americans living in Haiti.

I believe they said we were going out about 8 miles. I stayed in the water at least an hour but I lost track of time so it could have been longer. We were never rushed and with the guide in the water with us I was very comfortable exploring the area. Going back to Labadee took about two or three rum punches (however long that is!):)

We're going there in December, and I was just looking at our options for Labadee, and they list 2 excursions: One is just called Sea Trek Labadee Snorkeling and costs $16 per adult, the other is called Labadee Snorkel Safari and costs $46 per adult. We'd like to take our three children (ages 5, 9, and 11) and would prefer the cheaper one, but not if it isn't a good trip. This is our first cruise and would be our first time snorkeling.

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

Was there about 6 weeks ago. Malfini beach, although not listed as a snorkeling trip, had some excellent corals just off the beach. No snorkeling gear available on the tour so you have to have your own. They did have a "glass bottom" kayak for non snorkelers. Not many fish but, as I said some of the best coral I have ever seen for a beach snorkeling experience.

We have been to Labadee twice. The first time we took the ship's Malfini Beach tour and loved it. Very nice snorkeling (and we have been to a number of islands). The last time, we decided to save money and just snorkel off Labadee's beach area. What a disappointment. Plus the beaches were mobbed. Spend the money for an excursion. It's worth it.

Was that excursion from your cruise or did you book yourself ahead of time? Can I ask what the name of it was, it sounds like what I am looking for.

any excursions on Labadee you are booked thru the ship... it is their private island and everything is run by them...
