sandravb79 Posted August 5, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 5, 2009 Hey all, I am looking into a cruise that has Split as one of the stops. How does this "present" itself? Is the port right in the middle of the action (like Key West or Nassau or...) or do you have to go far to find a town, do some shopping, ...? Is an excursion needed here or is it possible to do things on your own? Thank you!
Rare cruisemom42 Posted August 5, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 5, 2009 Depending on what you want to see, it is easy to do Split on your own. Some ships dock very close to the main town; others dock in a more industrial port, but I understand the ships generally have a shuttle if it is needed. Once in town, you can walk around on your own. There are walking tours you can book for Diocletian's palace -- one was mentioned here recently that was about 90 minutes and also provided a bit of orientation for you to explore the rest of the old city on your own afterwards. There is no need to pre-reserve, they are available at set times throughout the day.
sandravb79 Posted August 5, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted August 5, 2009 Thank you Cruisemom. It's good to know the port isn't 50 km from the nearest town or so.

edinburgher Posted August 7, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 7, 2009 We did not dock at Split, we tendered right into the dock in the centre of town. Only had to cross the street to enter the old town. Plenty cafes, promenade etc right at the dock. If you need local currency, there was money exchange in the bus station just a few mins walk from the dock. You will see the buses from the dock, over to the right (if your back is to the sea) There are likely other forex facilities somewhere in the town also, but we used this one as we were taking a bus to Trogir. moyaroo Posted August 7, 2009 #7 Share Posted August 7, 2009 There are ATM "everywhere" in Split. It is a great town for just walking. The Roman ruins in the center of town are the highlights but the market was what got most of our photos.
Kazowie Posted August 10, 2009 #8 Share Posted August 10, 2009 How much time is needed to spend in the town? Are maps necessary or will we find everything easily? This market sounds intriguing - can you tell me more about it? Thanks for your help!

Does anyone know the names of the two ports and how one can figure out which one we might be in? We have twice used Holland's transfers when offered in Dubrovnik, but I don't know if they will offer a shuttle in Split and I wanted to get a sense early of whether we will need to make our own arrangements to get into the Old City and Diocletian's Palace or whether we can just walk it. Thanks in advance.
knot knormal Posted February 4, 2010 #10 Share Posted February 4, 2010 We were on RCCL last year and the port was very close to downtown. Walked to and from the palace and walled city.

Is there a place or company that offers these on a drop in basis? Is there a fee?

MercedMike Posted March 15, 2010 #13 Share Posted March 15, 2010 To be honest about it Split was not the highlight of our trip. There is a considerable promenade of shops, restaurants and so on, remarkably similar to those in dozens of other ports. There is the massive ruin of Diocletian's Palace. The ruins are in good condition, but the site is of minor historical importance. Both the palace and the promenade are in walking distance from the ship if you have no mobility limitations. Actually the most fun we had here was the ship's bus excursion up into the beautiful mountains to a small restaurant for local food and music!! Check out our trip report and pictures at http://www.bully4.us/holyland3.html Have a GREAT cruise!
