collecting shells

this will be my first beach cruise and i want to collect shells off the beach or from snorkeling to bring home. is this allowed?? i dont want to do anything that will get me in trouble. thanks

It depends on where you do the collecting. Cozumel has a protected marine park where it would be illegal to collect shells. This image shows the park boundary:

 

You can collect shells on the East side, no problem.
