Getting overpaid in a casino.....

If you have played enough it happens, and happens more often than you think. If you notice you have been overpaid do you bring it to the dealers attention and pay them back? Or do you simply say nothing and if it is a large amount (eg. 100 dollars or more) do you quietly get up and run for the door? LOL! :D

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO Yo Eleven: A quick one here. I was playing on a Carnival ship and the dealer I think was asleep. She didn't pay my Place bet until I appealed to the Boxman. Then on the next roll the shooter hit another Place bet of mine. I only had a $30 dollar bet and she paid me $70. I took my $35 and returned the rest to the dealer. She looked at me funny and I reminded her I had two $30 Place bets.

IMHO. it's not my job to monitor the dealers as they work. That what the bosses are supposed to do. On the other hand, if I am underpaid, or as occasionally happens at a blackjack table, not paid when I should be,. that IS my job monitor.

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO AndyTheK: First, I know what bets I make. I also know what my return is if they win. I only want what I win. I make sure I get paid and correctly.

I ALWAYS tell the dealer if I have been overpaid/underpaid. I believe in Karma and its not worth taking chances for a miserable $10-$25 bet. I have to live with myself and if I deliberately did not tell the dealer, I feel it is stealing and would have less respect for myself. We were in Las Vegas last week and when I told the dealer my twenty was a push (she thought she had 19) she reached over and took chips back from the two people she already paid by mistake.

You can steal my car, you can rob my house, you can even steal my wife from me. Only I can give away my integrity.

When a dealer makes a mistake and over pays me, I let them know. Sometimes, the pit boss orders my next drink.

That's right.....everyone....even casino dealers and as a casino dealer I will tell you that if you are overpaid and don't give the chips back and the dealer doesn't catch it BUT survillance DOES ....for you, the customer, it is considered stealing and the pit boss will ask you for the chips back. If you refuse to give the chips back....BYE BYE....and it goes into the computer on your file if you are being rated.

Casinos do have to figure out if being overpaid is just a mistake on the dealer's part or an effort on the part of the player and dealer in collusion to cheat.

I'd add that collusion of this sort is much less frequent on a cruise ship than on a land based casino. These things have to be worked out in advance. Land based dealers live in the community and have lots of chances to meet with would-be players they can cheat with. On a cruise ship, the dealers have virtually no interaction with the passengers other than at the table itself.

I differ with you on that because I see it happen all the time and the player is just as clueless about it as the dealer.

It's not stealing unless you're in on it with the dealer. You're only taking what the dealer is giving you. :D

If I don't get paid correctly can I call the police and have the dealer arrested? Im gonna try this next time and I'll let you know how it turns out

I'm usually never lucky enough to get overpaid because they're a little more careful paying black chips. If it does happen I usually just keep it up there until they ask me to do something with it then I just press it.

And for the record, I sleep just fine at night. :D

IWONAREDBUG is correct. I worked in IT for a land-based casino and not only are there many, many "eyes in the sky" but also if a dealer comes up short the surveillence department will run the tape for the whole shift at that dealer's table and when they find the overpaid person will definitely make sure it is paid back.

belle...please tell me how you determine a table is short:confused:. With no cash register,no register tape, chips moving to and from the table, just ain't no way unless it is a monster amount.

Anyway,I have never seen a table audit at the change of shifts.

In all my years of gambling, both onboard and on land, I have never been overpaid. But if I were, I'd bring it to the dealer's attention and return the extra. My philosophy is that since I'd say something if I were underpaid, then I should also say something if I'm overpaid.

I follow this same philosphy whenever I'm given change in a store too and have often returned extra change.

We ALWAYS tell them...Fate, Kismet...what goes around, comes around. You cheat (and that's what it is), you'll pay in the long run!

Everytime an "error" has been made in our favor, and we bring it to their attention, we end up winning BIG TIME. Fate!

I would definitely let me dealer know. I would hate to think that they might have to pay for my profit. Same applies in retail, and it happens often, people make mistakes. The smile or appreciation I have received from doing the "right" thing is worth far more than the money I could have kept. People work hard for their money and I don't want to take what isn't mine...I do believe you get what you give.

And when you get underpaid is that cheating by the casino?

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO Yo Eleven: That is why even before you make your bet you should know what your return should be. I don't think a casino would try to cheat a player. Mistakes have been known to happen. One time I stopped a game, on a ship no less, because I hadn't been paid on a Place Bet. Then I got paid the wrong amount. It took a few moments, but, it got straightned out.

I don't know about others, but, when I play I want just what I win when I win. I don't want any extra. I don't think of myself as a charity case. If that were the case, why would I be on a cruise?

I was overpaid once in a casino but didn't realize it until security came and took me to the back room. I told them I had no idea so I gave them the money back, then they gave me drinks and free parking and a couple of other little extras..

how much were you overpaid that they back roomed you? I assume we aren't talking 5-10 bucks. That or they had their eye on the dealer for working with a partner.

I've been overpaid many times and underpaid probably just as much. When I notice, I let the dealers know. When you are honest with them about an overpayment they tend to pay closer attention to you and even pay you for bets that you forgot to make because they know your betting patterns. Course a tip here and there helps with that too.

I have a great story from my last CCL cruise. There was a dealer that I met on the 2nd day of the cruise who was obviously new to craps. As I approached the table no one was there and a more experienced deal was walking her through the different payouts. When I saw this I decided to play as a do better, just to be nice....she did fine. When other people came to the table, I changed to the dark side. What was funny was that she was paying my lay bets 100%. Twice I layed $50 no ten and I was paid 50. I was surprised that they didn't have a box man to monitor her. Rookies....I love'em. All dealer mistakes in my favor pay 50% in tips...
